I have Leaf Guard installed on my rain gutters. Will this product be effective without running the cable in the gutters and on the roof or can you just run the cable on the Leaf Guards and clip onto the roof?

        Answer This Question

Since utility prices for electricity vary from city to city, and state to state, it's impossible to tell what it costs. It's just pennies a day.

                Answer This Question

No it will work without a thermostat on it. The cable will just stay on until it's unplugged. It will not get hot enough to do any damage to your roof.

200' cable was fairly easy to install. It took me about 3 hours. I encourage anyone to first make a layout sketch of your roof pattern to determine the length require. Included in your layout should be outlet location and the roof clip placement. The cables work well to prevent ice damming and stopped the roof from leaking. The electric cost was a little high.

The snow and ice melting cables worked as described , installation was fairly simple the clips and hangers are included so you dont need to buy anything extra to complete the installation.

Melted through already established ice dams on my roof in about 24 or so hours. Highly recommended for ice problems.

Defrosting 200 feet with cable kit is easy to install, especially with a little planning ahead of time. Fully layout the cable and plan the routing along the gutters, downspout, and roof with recommended zigzag pattern using the provided clips. Some clips will require securing with nails or screws to ensure a firm a hold. Most clips we just need to be installed in between shingles. Plug-in and should work as expected.

I've had these installed for years and here are the pros and cons: PROS: When these are installed properly, they will work in mild to moderate conditions. Cables need to extend beyond the eve into the gutter, and zig zag up the roof beyond the depth of the eve. You also need to hang a separate cable from the roof cable that runs the length of the gutter and down the downspout, or the gutter will just fill with ice and mitigate the purpose of the cable on the roof. You also need to turn these on BEFORE a snow event. CONS: Tricky to install, especially when hanging the gutter cable (it needs slack). Count on buying more cable than you estimate too. I had to go back to the store twice. These don't work well in extreme conditions (a foot of snow or more or extreme cold temperatures - or both) They can make things worse if turned on AFTER the snow event (they just melt the snow and the water turns to ice immediately.) The shingle clips are designed poorly and don't hold well, especially if you use a roof rake (you will jut rip the cable off the roof, even if you're being careful) Your electric bill will be noticeably higher. SUMMARY: This is really just a band-aid to a bigger issue (poor insulation or ventilation, or both) But they can be helpful if you have a low-pitched roof and have resolved all those other issues and are still having problems such as I do. Do they help? Yes, sometimes... Would I install then again? Probably not. I'd either find a better product out there and spend the money or buy a house with a higher-profiled, well-insulated, well ventilated roof - or move south! PICTURE: This photo shows the cables NOT working well. Even though I turned them on well before the storm, we got 18" of snow in one day and it was -2 degrees outside. The cables can't handle it and I wish I hadn't turned them on because I feel like they made things worse. The last small storm we had, they worked much better and I had less ice and no icicles.
