Answer

Hank, you install this laterally along the length of the pipe you are trying to protect. Either use electrical tape or zip ties every 6" or so. Do not spiral wrap it as it can potentially overheat the pipe (particularly if its PVC). There is no battery, it must be plugged into 110V AC. Not sure about the color selection but I don't think it comes in any other colors. It's not heavy when spread out over the length of the pipe. Be sure to pick the one that is closest to your needed application. I would also suggest covering the heat tape with insulation wrap and weather-resistant duct tape. Protects the wiring and adds additional insulation.

Can this cable be spiraled around a copper pipe?

Yes, but better to run it parallel to & touching the pipe & covered in black pipe foam [pre-formed & split]. Tape the cable to the pipe with electrical tape every 2 feet or so. DO NOT allow the cable to cross over [contact] itself or it MAY short out.

Can you lay this in a patio door track to keep the door from freezing shut?

No it will not work because the thermostat will never allow the cable to turn on. It’s not made for that.

Yes. Just don't let the heat tape cross over onto itself or it may short at the point the tape crosses onto itself.

Not likely, too low a wattage. These are designed to come on as the temperate nears freezing to protect pipes.

UpstateNY. Yes, what you're wanting to do should work. Would also suggest putting insulation over the exposed part and the heat tape and sealing it with outdoor duct tape.

I don't think the heat cable can be wound around sealed form insulation. It is designed to fit directly on water pipe. Would not recommend it.

I needed something for a short spam of water pipe in a building that I was renting. The previous tenant used an electric heater for this purpose, but that didn’t seem safe or efficient to me. So I did some research and found this item. It is Reasonably price, Easy to install, and Seems to work well. I recommend.
