Questions & Answers

can the 60ft be used with an extention cord if there is no other option?

I know it says not recommended but if that is the only option for the moment can it be done, and would there be a specific length or gauge cord not to exceed, thanks
Asked by: sickofwinter
Your best, safest route is to install an outdoor-rated outlet box set within the length of leader provided. If you have a 5-ft leader, set the outlet box approximately 2-3 ft from the edge of the roof. The slack provides for a drip loop. Outdoor-rated conduit and box; splice into existing outdoor outlet.

Can this cable be used to keep snow off solar panels?

Can this cable be attached to solar panels without damaging either item?
Asked by: Nenny911
Depending on the amount of snow your trying to clear, probably not a good choice for solar. I know solar panels heat up just fine in when these are exposed, so perhaps the little channels provided by the wire/tape will accelerate the panel's clearing. However, I've got to believe there are better products or systems (maybe a well placed and protected blower utilizing attic space heat).

Can this be used for water pipes

Asked by: roundguy
Use the heat tapes designed for pipe heating. The thermostats are quite different and this deicing cables are not designed to 'touch' each other or get bent to the degree necessary in wrapping pipe.

What is the rating of this cable in watts?

Asked by: Dukie
The amperage is more useful measure. The cables will vary in draw from 2 to 8 amps depending on length. Just remember to look at the circuit the cables are on (15 or 20 amp) before deciding how many cables you can install. Instructions will recommend different or dedicated use outlets for each cable, which is seldom possible. (if you don't have amperage ratings listed there are conversion tables on the internet to go from watts to amps)

60 ft. Roof De-Icing Cable Kit is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Star Review Rating provided by a verified purchaser

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Purchased to replaced previous defective deicing cable. I just installed this cable on 11-2-'11 so I don't know with the result will bring without the snow & ice but I wish I did this last year because I had ice in the gutter, outside of the downspout and down the side of the house over the picture window in the kitchen. I have a flat roof so I installed this heat cable in the gutter and down the inside of the downspout out to the outside outlet. I plug this into a weatherproof outside GFCI outlet which I can turn on or off from a switch inside the house. The ice was BRUTAL last year and I'm not taking any chances! This is worth the money and time!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as expected Had one snow already but the weather is still unusually mild this winter. Have not yet had weather to create a potential ice dam for me which happens every year but I expect it to work well. The cable heats up and is warm to touch. Very easy to install. Clips not really designed to attach to gutter. You can drop the cable down the downspout and run it along the gutter but still need to fasten it in place to prevent it from sliding.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Expensive to run I did not know how expensive it would be to run what I "thought" was a low wattage item. It certainly takes a long time melting the snow/ice off my roof so I was shocked when I got my electricity bill after installing two 60 ft kits on the front and one 100 ft kit to the back of my house. It added $100 to my electricity bill in a one month period. There should be a warning label on the box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from worthwhile purchase I had a previous set of these cables on the roof for the past 8 years and they worked very well i had a second one running in the gutter which needed replacement after 10 years so i decided to replace both at the same time. They do an excellent job at keeping the roof ice free.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised Had some ice dam problems that led to water in the attic and home interior. Laid the cable in the roof valley lines (where the dams were forming) and had no further trouble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I used this to keep a drainage grate free from... I used this to keep a drainage grate free from ice and it is working well. I don't have any of the wires crossed and it is doing wonders to keep the water moving so it doesn't overflow onto the driveway.
