Questions & Answers

Can you still open a door or window once this product has been installed?

We have an old sliding glass door that needs to be replaced, but since we can't do that, I'm thinking of installing this film. But once I have it on the door, will we still be able to open and close it? Or once the product is on, is the window or door out of use until it is taken off?
Asked by: halfbreed
The Door or Window will Absolutely Not be able to be used in a normal fashion (opened & closed). The plastic sheeting is attached to the decorative trim around the door or window via two sided adhesive tape. The objective of this product is to eliminate all the air infiltrating around the window sash or door frame. Once the plastic is in place on the two sided tape a heat source such as a hair dryer is used to shrink the plastic sheeting which eliminates all the wrinkles in the plastic and improved the overall appearance of the system. Air is trapped between the plastic film and the window glass and sash insulating the window and stopping drafts around the window or door. Once the plastic film is removed you would have to re-install another new plastic sheet over the window or door. You can not re-apply the old plastic sheet because you have custom fit the old one and stretched it. New two sided tape will also be required. It is a good idea to clean the area where the two way tape will be applied so that it sticks properly. Follow all of the instructions ! ! ! The cleaning agent used must be appropriate to the surface i.e. painted or varnished wood or metal frame. This product has worked very well for me as I have a home built in 1880 and I have kept the old original windows which are huge (31"X 84") because I love the charm of the wavy glass and I wanted to keep the house as original as possible. It has cut my heating bill to about 1/3 of what it would be without the film. It also works to eliminate drafts so the heat is much more even and consistent than without the film. This product also works during the air cooling season by reducing leaks however, I prefer to have the windows open whenever I can so I replace them every year - all 25 windows.

How easy is the tape to remove?

Asked by: Cafea1a
The tape is nearly impossible to remove and has been known to take some paint with it. Admittedly, I am in my seventies, and not able to be as meticulous as I would like...

how many windows will one package do?

Asked by: Financially Strapped
If very carefully applied, you could do two 5 ft patio doors. You would need to carefully measure and flawlessly cut your plastic. Possibly you might run short on the sticky, but could use some clear tape in a less visible area to finish the job.

Washed surface prior to application. Even put 2 strips on the first part to peel up and a week later it has come off again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this product was huge during the brutal winter last year. I remember the xmas blizzard2010, in NYC very vividly. snowed in...freezing and several drafts coming into my apt. Luckily, i purchased multiple plastic sheets. after a couple of hours I had 4 (6ftx8ft)windows and my balcony doors(6ftx10ft.) sealed for the winter. Amazing difference right away. sealed perfectly- and with ease! the plastic is super clear- that once applied- is hard to notice. easily cut 20% off my national grid/gas bill! * anyhow,I just purchased some more for this winter. and once again - put it up in a snap! im ready for the cold-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Idea I ordered this to cover most of my drafty windows, I don't mind fresh air but I do mind the smoke from chimneys that although are not close by, it seems to stick around my apartment, being asthmatic you can guess my first winter in this apartment is no fun. It must be the geography of the town and the fact that we don't get a lot of wind around here. I do recommend that you allow some "give" on windows that get full sunlight through most of the day (that we do get a lot) because it will shrink the plastic and start to loose it's grip on the glue, luckily for me I had left over 2 inches on the sides and had glue tape left over.

This will be the fourth year we have used this product and have never had any problems. We like that it is so clear and stays intact until we take it down . We have fourteen grandchildren who are always around, and it holds up to there now and then pushing on it .I don't understand why there are so many differences in the performance of this product. But it works for our patio doors.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend this product The plastic doesn't stick to the tape. I've used other similar products that worked MUCH better. I will not purchase this again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money on this brand. Pay the money and go 3M. This kit does not adhere well and I removed it on day one. I have been covering my patio door for 9 years. I have used 3M without an issue. I have tried HD Frost King and ACE Hardware brand in that time and they were both a complete failure.
