A: It's always best to apply a base sheet first. They make a peel and stick base sheet.

Even experienced companies can't get this to stick properly
3 months after install. Material does not stick properly and rolls onto itself. Poor quality manufacturing.

This was a good weekend project small part of my roof has always leaking. It has a very low slope. Made it through 2 years with no problems and no signs of quiting. Get plenty of razor blades. Had to by the spray can asphalt material. You can do it!

INSTALLATION OF THE LIBERTY SELF ADHISIVE CAP
Installed on a very low slope roof. I followed the instructions that I got from the web for suggested installation and followed them. Problem that I first encountered is that Home Depot does not stock the Matrix 309 primer in the store. It is rather thick and can be cut a little with mineral spirits. Best to roll out the roofing to ensure straight lines first, once you remove the film, it is stuck for good. Like anything else ensure you have a good base to install it on, and don't rush the job.
This appears to be much better than the rolled roofing, which will start to disintegrate in about 3-5 years. Will see how long this holds up.
I used this instead of tin roof for horses. The pinging on a metal roof will unsettle them.

Easy installation for Home owner
I'm a homeowner installing a roof for the first time. I had no idea what I was doing, but thanks to the videos/instructions/these reviews, I just saved like $5000!! :) Total out of pocket was under $800 I'd say. But whew, hard on the back, all that bending over.
I was installing over a garage, with stairs up to the roof/deck above, so I bought a dolly to transport the rolls up to the roof. No problems with the weight of the rolls.
I took several shortcuts though: Since HD was out of the recommended asphalt primer, and I didn't want to wait for a delivery, I just used an "asphalt sealer" that looked pretty close, that they had in stock, to coat the plywood. Then I took my chances and just installed the "Cap layer" or whatever on top. Apparently installing THREE layers is recommended by GAF. Heck with that! Added expense, + nobody has time for that!
Anyway, then I smeared some Asphalt "cement" around the seams. Stinky! I have a completely flat roof (no slope, like is apparently required for this product). Just installed it last night. It rained lightly for an hour and no leaks in the garage underneath yet! Hooray!
Today/sometime soon I'll install the flashing around the perimeter. Wish me luck! Will update after it pours down rain this weekend :) I mean, what's the worst that can possibly happen? Fingers crossed.

The rolls are very heavy (so get help lifting), but the material is flexible and flattens out quickly once placed. Easy to cut with a utility knife. The back side of the white peel-off material sticks very strongly to the sticky side of the roofing, so caution should be used letting it fly about in the wind (not uncommon on a roof); it would definitely be easier if both sides were equally non-sticky.

I installed this cap sheet over the Liberty SBS Self-Adhering Base Sheet for Low Slope Roofs. Because of this, much of the prep work that would normally go into this product I discuss in the review for that product.
This cap sheet, which is essentially a very large aggregate roof shingle sticker, is very easy to use and install, albeit very heavy. While the instructions don’t say it, I wouldn’t recommend installing this product without the base layer. To me, that’s like installing traditional roofing shingles without felt paper underneath. The base sheet provides a clean and smooth surface that is designed to adhere to the cap sheet.
Installation of the cap sheet is very simple: roll it out, cut to the correct length, place in the correct spot, fold back the top edge and roll it down into place, then fold up the bottom edge and roll that into place. There is an adhesive strip along the top edge on the top side of the roll as well, to help with adhesion for the next row. Since it does not stick nearly at all to aggregate, this strip is a welcomed idea.
I found the best way to hold the strips in place (mine were about 13 feet long) was to use quick clamps at either end. The roll is very stiff and doesn’t sag over this distance. The most difficult part of the installation was putting pressure onto the cap sheet to make it stick to the base layer. By itself, it is not heavy enough to adhere. Use a weighted roller (at the very least, walk all over it) to get it to stick down. Use some flashing adhesive on the ends and you’re done! I roofed my entire shed (10’x13’) in under one hour. No hammering (back nailing is required in some situations), no heat and not really any specialty tools required (a trowel and a roller is about it).
I did encounter one problem that the instructions did not cover, nor could I find the answer online. Since my roof was shorter than four full sections, and longer than three; and since the cap sheet does not stick to its aggregate section, I ended up with a roughly 16” wide strip at the top of the roof. I ended up cutting the cap sheet to the correct width and adhering that. My problem was I left with a rather horrendous looking edge. I decided to flash over this for a cleaner look, installing drip edge flashing with glue (and nails on the downward side). I honestly think it would have been better to leave the flashing off that top edge until the base and cap sheets were installed, but I was following the instructions to the letter until this point.
All in all, I am very impressed with how easy the roof was to install. I’ve had a few heavy rains and several gusts of wind that probably would have finally done in the rotting cedar shake roof that I replaced. The roof still looks good. The material doesn’t have any curb appeal though, so I think it would be best used on places that don’t get a lot of eye sight on them.
An added bonus is that there is very little waste material, as you're cutting the rolls to the correct size. From installing the base sheet and the cap sheet I only filled one 13 gallon garbage bag with backings: that was all the waste!
I'm rating it down to four stars simply for the lack of clear directions on a finished look.

So if you've looked at the GAF Base Sheet that is designed to be used in combination with this cap sheet, you'll likely have seen my review. If that's the case, you'll see that I came into unfortunate timing with delivery of my test product and then the weather just did not cooperate. So like with the base sheet, I performed an inspection of the product.
What I found was that the material was definitely thick like the base sheet, increasing its durability, and I could see that the Shakewood color advertised is pretty darn close to what I observed on the end of the roll. There were no areas of the roll where it was cracked, permanently bend or deformed/damaged in any way.
I feel completely confident that this product will improve the value of my garage when I tear off the currently damaged shingles (tree fell on it last year) and replace them with this product. Of course I'm going to try to get some family members to at least help haul the rolls up on to the roof.
