This product is designed for use underneath asphalt shingles or metal roofing. It is not designed for use as a primary roof covering.

According to https://www.miamidade.gov/permits/hurricane-mitigation.asp as of 9/2/2018, you can either tape all edges of the roof decking with 4" self-adhesive tape & use an underlayment over the decking and tape or you can mechanically fasten an underlayment then completely cover it with a self-adhesive leak barrier like StormGuard. Taping is easier and cheaper, Stormguard over the whole roof is a much better secondary barrier since it is continuous and self seals around roofing nails and screws.

I never tried, but I wouldn't think so because the face of the sheet is a rubberized PVC. I bet thought if the right primer is used, it could be painted

Asked by: zzz
Depends on where you are. Miami/Dade says to apply over a mechanically fastened underlayment; https://www.miamidade.gov/permits/hurricane-mitigation.asp. This may differ for uses other than secondary barrier in hurricane areas.

Customer Reviews

StormGuard 200 sq. ft. Roll Film Surfaced Roof Leak Barrier is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from GAF Stormguard I had been requested by an insurance agent to use the GAF Stormguard on a roof that had very little slope. The home owner had the roof replaced 2 time before & it always leaked causing damage. During a recent storm a tree limb broke & the wind brushed the limb against the rolled roofing causing tares but the water did not get through. I would highly reccomend this product for problem areas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Stuff I am using this on a very low sloped section of my roof, a california valley or cricket I have been told. This is very easy to work with, nice and thick. I am laying it out over the whole low slope section and up under the paper on the adjacent slopes. The plastic pulls off very easy, even after it is laying in place and under other roof 6-8 inches. Could not be more happy with this product. I was skeptical after reading the one review but I am happy I bought this one. I feel confident this will water proof this section of the roof. It went longer than I thought. I will have a lot left over.

I put this on my wood shed 2 years ago, because I know it would be a few months before I would get to put shingles on, still no shingles no leaks held up so far, I know it is not designed for exposure for that long. I guess I better get it covered but could not be happier with it. Note when installing put a few staples across the top were the next roll will cover to hold it place, pull up the bottom and peel stick it down then pop the staples and peel and stick the top.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from STORMGUARD, ITS STUCK TO MY HAND Stormguard is a pain to use, until u start to think about what it is and how it works, so i used it to my advantage, first its heavy, so i cut it on the ground, (instead of on the roof), second it seals around the nails and if you read the install sheets it should be cap nailed down, so to stop it from sliding off the roof i would put a couple of nails in the top 3 inches to hold until i can get the white paper film of off the bottom half and stick it down, pull the nail at the top, peal the paper and your done, then just nail the rest down, The only down side i can think of at this point is that the white film paper on the back is so hard to cut, but i fixed that problem too, just put if face down and cut the back side first, seems to work for me, By the time i am done with my roof, i will have used 13 rolls of the stuff, i have used 4 as of today, i'm working alone on a 33 square roof that is my summer project, i will review every GAF product is have used under the maininbuff heading

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I bought this product to put on a low slope roof of a shed I was building. I was hesitant as I had read other reviews about it not sticking and being hard to work with. I can assure you that as an amateur I had no problems with this product other than it may be too sticky. It went on easily, stuck to the roof (OSB, and everything else), and provided a nice underlayment to the shingles. I would recommend to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good product, would recommend First off, for the price vs grace, it is well worth the small issues that it has. Grace provides small 33' rolls for a lot more in price vs this stuff which is 66.6' and about a hundred dollars cheaper than the grace. I did my roof myself, and the biggest issue I had was keeping it straight down the roof line on the first course. The back liner is very slippery plastic and my pitch was only 4/12, but it still slid down, but that is also mostly my issue since I did it myself. If I would've had help, it would've been easier. The plastic backing tears easily while peeling off from the backside. I tried to do it a few different ways, and the best way was simply do the bottom layer, and then the top separately. If the rolls are left out in the sun, the plastic becomes more difficult to remove, and sometimes tears off during peeling, not a huge deal, but if you get any part of the outside of the plastic stuck to the face of the ice shield, it is NOT coming off, only one side of the plastic is non stick. The product does stick when the roof isn't hot (above 65 degrees), but once its down, don't think about taking it back off. I had an issue where it buckeled and tried to pull the bad section back off, and it took the first layer of zip system with it. I had a few small areas where the entire thing had a bubble under it, or where it didn't adhere, but it seemed to be that it wasn't pulled tight enough and there was extra product in that area. It could've been from "course correction" when I was trying to keep it straight. That said, it would be beneficial to maybe J roll the entire thing. It needs the pressure of something similar to a j roller to press the adhesive into place, it won't lay down and stick everywhere all on its own. I suppose the shingle weight takes care of that issue, but I am very detail oriented and it bothered me. I would buy it again, and I will recommend it to anyone who needs to purchase this type of product. There is no way the grace is worth the price they want for the tiny rolls when compared to this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from GAF let me down ! This product did not stick to plywood. Very hard to work with. Left sit for two days and came back to bubbles and wrinkles. 85 degree day so it should have stuck. It does stick to itself real good. GAF needs to look at this and correct the problem. It was installed over new plywood. I hope the GAF shingles and starter shingles don't fail also. They advertise you need to use three of there products to get the lifetime warranty They need to do better on this product. I should have read the reviews before I purchased this product. They all say the same thing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor substitute for Grace Ice & Water Shield After running out of Grace Ice & Water Shield in the middle of a big roofing project, we hustled back to our local Home Depot to see if they restocked. They are now only carrying this GAF product, so we bought that instead. We couldn’t be more disappointed! For starters, when rolling out on the roof to cut a piece, we were surprised to find that there are no convenient markings (like the Grace product) for 6” and 1 foot. No biggie. The roll was way harder to manage on our (only) 4 pitch roof also, because the middle of the slippery roll would telescope out and down the roof. The plastic reinforced paper release on the grace product doesn’t do this. The real problems started when trying to pull the flimsy plastic release film off while the sun was shining. You can’t pull the whole width off at the same time – it is really designed for half a width at a time. This means that if you are used to unrolling and pulling the release at the same time, this method won’t work well. Maddeningly, even half of the release sticks and tears while pulling off if the sun is shining on the finish side.. (It was 5PM sun, so I’m surprised at this. The Grace product behaved much better in the same (or hotter) sunlight. The real frustration comes when it is all down. It’s slippery! You can sit on the Grace on a 4 pitch, but not even close with the GAF non-granulated product. This product is inconvenient, frustrating, and unsafe.
