Questions & Answers

Does it matter which yellow wire goes to a red or a blue wired lamp? One position inop with known good tube.

All wires and sockets have continuity to the ballast.

Can this ballast be used with the new LED bulbs?
Asked by: Rush
Good question especially now since LED bulbs are taking over most every facet of lighting. Pyrroc is correct. There are LED bulbs now that require no ballast, in fact, if there is a ballast, you must either bypass it altogether or remove it. Home Depot now carries those LED bulbs. One brand they have in stock at my HD is Toggled. There are others. The advantage is if your ballast is out, you don't need another ballast. The ballastless LED bulbs will operate on straight 120 volts in a non shunted configuration. That is the one catch that is important to know. Shunted fixtures are fairly easy to identify. A shunted lamp holder will have just one wire going to it as opposed to two. I know it gets confusing fast. Lots of information out there.

I have had these lights up in my shop for about 10 years and finally lost two ballast. These ballast were easy to wire and work great. I have only had these ballast in for about a month, but have not had any issues since installing. It is nice to have all the lights working again.

If you need your existing 4-lamp lighting fixture to work and aren't ready to switch to LED (or darkness), then this ballast is for you. Like all ballasts, this is a mysteriously heavy black box with some wires sticking out of it. The wires are nicely color coded--that is, if you have enough light to see the colors and are not color blind, they are. There is even an electronic diagram on the label of the ballast that provides useful information. Remove the old ballast leaving enough of its mysterious colored wires to attach to the new ballast. Do this with the electricity off for increased chances of outliving the life of your ballast. If all goes well, your new ballast will somehow make the lights work through its embedded magic. Reward yourself with a beverage of your choice after successful installation. (Note--ballast does NOT come with choice of beverage.)

As our T12 ballasts burn out, I am replacing two T12 ballasts and four 40 watt T12 bulbs with one T8 ballast and four 32 watt T8 bulbs that provide better quality light. The wiring is a little tricky but the schematic on the ballast is all you need to correctly install them to replace the two T12 ballasts. As aside - I recently discovered the Toggle brand direct power LED replacement bulb that HD carries. That is the best of all worlds in that it eliminates the ballasts all together, instantly lights and provides excellent quality flicker free light at only about 9 watts to replace a 40/32 watt bulb.

This worked fine with no difficulties except that I have put in approximately 5 different brands of flourescent fixtures over the last 40 years and all but the very first ones had plug in power wires which this does not. Maybe the plugs aren't as ubiquitious as I think they are but it would have been nice just to plug it into the socket in the light fixture rather than using wire nuts. Just a small thing but the reason for 4 rather than 5 stars. While not a huge fan of waste it would be easy to cut the plug off and use wire nuts if necessary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good replacement for blown up ballast in Lithonia 4-bulb fixture This was a good replacement for a AccuPro ballast in a Lithonia 4-bulb fixture. Further, this is the ballast you want to use if you are using these lamps in your residence. This is one of the cases where the "residential" component is superior to the "commercial" one, and here's why. The "commercial" grade ballasts are subject to a different level of regulation with respect to the amount of radio frequency noise they emit. The "commercial" rating is at least three times as much. This does not matter much unless you have a radio receiver in your house, but if you want to listen to AM broadcast, the "commercial" rated ballasts are going to make that more difficult. I replaced an AccuPro "commercial" ballast with this one, and the radio noise went away. Pretty much completely gone. If you care about radio noise (maybe because you are a amateur radio operator,) then you want a ballast such as this one that is compliant with 47 CFR Part 18 "CLASS B" regulations. If you want to learn more, google "47CFR18" to see the Federal Regulations.

I bought several of these to replace the clunky magnetic ballasts in my light fixtures, as well as replace the fluorescent tubes with LED tubes (these require an electronic ballast). They work great! Start up in INSTANT, and these are a breeze to install! Highly recommended if you're looking to save

A lot of wires for the average homeowner, but if you stay with the same colors and read the instructions it should only take about 15 to 30 minutes after you make sure the electricity is turned off to the circuit.
