Questions & Answers

how do I remove the black and white wires from the back of the duplex receptacle

Asked by: befine
First, make sure the power is off before working on the receptacle. There is a small rectangular slot below where the wire is inserted. Use a small tip screwdriver and press in through this slot while pulling on the wire you are trying to remove.

15 Amp 125-Volt AC Grounding Duplex Receptacle, Ivory is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.

The GE Duplex receptacle is a good quality product that I used to replace an old one in my house. The hardest part is figuring out the color. Recommend you take a sample to the store if you have an older home, which I do. My house was built in the early 80's so the color to match is now called "IVORY". The "ALMOND", is a lighter shade, although it looks good, then you have to replace everything else. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was that the price is slightly higher than the Leviton unit. Easy to install.

I have used many of these receptacles for replacing old worn ones or for new construction projects. They are easy to install as a replacement and the holes for the pressure locking feature easily accommodate a 12 gauge lead. I have tried some other receptacles that make inserting 12 gauge wire difficult if not impossible. This receptacle solves that problem with minimal cost increase per unit.

Very easy to install with just a Philips screw driver and wire strippers, Just strip the wire back about 3/8 inch and push the wire in the proper holes and tighten the screw heads. Replace in the electrical box tighten screws and reinstall the face plate. These are long lasting receptacles and pretty much maintenance free.

The color is ivory and the connections to this receptacle can be made by using the screw terminals for the black and white wires and ground or by using the "Pressure-Lock" insert-wire-to-connect holes on the rear of the receptacle for both the black and white conductors. There is a convenient wire strip gauge on the rear that indicates the length of wire covering that needs to be removed when using the Pressure-Lock feature. One only needs to strip that length of insulation from the wire and then push the bare exposed part all the way into the hole nearest the screw terminal for that conductor. Should removal of the conductor be necessary, with the power shut down for that receptacle, just insert a narrow screwdriver (as used for installing screws into face plates) to push and apply pressure to release the grip on the conductor. Then the wire can easily be pulled from the connection. This grounding receptacle can also be split for use with one outlet on a switch and the other always hot by removing the metal bridge for the silver screws and gold screws on each side of the duplex outlet. It will easily break off with the use of some needle nose pliers. You can then wire the receptacle accordingly for that purpose.
