Questions & Answers

Is it noisy? I've read reviews of other GE fridges being noisy.

Asked by: jc
We bought our fridge 9 months ago. Within the first month, there is a constant loud churning noise. Loud enough for us to turn up the TV volume! I wish we had purchased another refrigerator that I know was quiet and worked properly.

On GE's website it states this model has an internal water dispenser, but here it doesn't show one. Can you please verify which is true?

Yes, it has icemaker (in the freezer) and water-maker in the left-front wall of the refrigerator section. Check out the online owners manual for details.

24.7 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator in Slate, Fingerprint Resistant and ENERGY STAR is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2405.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from lots of room We needed a refrigerator in white, and one that we could get quickly ( in stock), as our three year old refrigerator died over the holiday season! Our choices were somewhat limited, so we purchased this appliance without the benefit of doing much research. This is our fist "French door" refrigerator, and it took a little getting used to, but now that I have it, I enjoy the three door concept, as well as having the freezer on the bottom. This appliance has adequate storage space on the sides, without being too complicated - which translates to not having too many compartments to clean. The open shelves provide plenty room when I am entertaining and need that space. The LED lighting is clean and bright. My only negative about this product is the packaging! Everything was wrapped so tight, that it took two of us a few hours to unwrap all of the containers (and the refrigerator) following delivery. Some of the plastic is still in the crevices!

We bought this fridge and just under the 4 months it started making the most horrible loud noise and the freezer stopped working. We used the GE manufacturer warranty and it took them almost TWO WEEKS to even send a technician, and though they claimed he would have the parts, he 1. did not have the parts and 2. broke MORE parts while taking apart our fridge. NOW the fridge and the freezer no longer work at all, the technician never ordered the parts that were needed and the GE unhelpful service representatives kept claiming that they had no idea if parts were ordered or if they could even track them. After multiple days on the phone with GE they finally discovered no parts were ordered and sent the SAME technician to our house. He stated, since the parts were not here, he couldn't do anything and promptly left. Now I have a metal cabinet in my house that is sucking up electricity and keeping everything room temperature. GE refuses to replace it at this point and it has been almost a month since my "new" fridge broke

I read the other reviews and agree that the inside water dispenser is difficult to use and that the shelf arrangement, as the refrigerator is originally arranged, won't hold milk or other tall items. We got around that with an extension to the water dispenser and arranged the shelves as in the photo. The little shelf will hold canned drinks on their side or individual yogurt containers, leftovers, etc. After we did that, I can say I'm pleased with the fridge. I love the finish and the space in the fridge section. If we didn't have a separate chest type freezer we wouldn't have enough freezer space, but for us this space is adequate. I like the ice maker location, because I can get out as much ice as I need. My old ice dispenser would take forever and the ice container was a pain to remove. I just hope this one holds up as well as my last GE. It was over 10 years old and still going strong when I gave it to a relative. I've had this one about 2 months.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We've had this refrig now for almost a month and we really like it a lot. It replaced a side-by-... We've had this refrig now for almost a month and we really like it a lot. It replaced a side-by-side Kitchen Aide. We were looking at LGs and Samsungs but all of them seem to have some hidden issues with ice build-up if they either have the defective drain tube (our daughter's LG and a friend's Samsung have that) or are not levelled such that they tilt back a bit, or both. We know no less than three other owners who have this issue and it is a serious annoyance because even if you replace the defective part (and assuming refrig is levelled properly) the whole refrig has to be shut off until the rest of the (frozen) drain plumbing thaws and drains. Of course you only find that out the hard way since the service part instructions do not mention that! This GE has no such issues. Also, all the Samsungs and LGs were about 1 inch too tall to fit the standard cutout for 33" wide refrigerators and were too shallow for the right door to fully open next to a standard 30" deep sidewall. Possibly they are build to a different standard? This GE fit all the dimensions perfectly with the recommended 1/8" on either side, 1" on top and 2" behind made the right door perfectly clear the side-wall. One thing we liked about the old side-by-side is that the freezer side had door shelves which a French door refrig with freezer on the bottom necessarily gives-up but in return we got MUCH more space overall in the refrig section and you put in large items impossible to fit in a side by side -- like party platters in the refrig section and a large turkey in the freezer section -- can't do that with a 33" side-by-side and that was one of the biggest frustrations with our old refrig. We like that this GE refrig fits the standard opening while being about 25% bigger inside than our prior 19 cubic foot and using about 30% less energy too! This refrig is also very quiet and well laid-out -- the retractable half-shelf is very handy. The lowest door shelf is smaller than the other (to clear the full-width drawer at the bottom of the refrig section) and if you have a lot of tall bottles to put in the door shelves which cause you to space them out as far as possible, then that smaller bottom shelf is hard to get to, but still usable for smaller items. Some things not obvious in the GE owners manual for this model is that, though not pictured there is an on/off switch on the icemaker which is critical to turn off if not hooking the refrig up to a water line. The manual shows two pics covering a host of other models but none for this refrig model. I called GE and after a while talked to a tech who told me it is there -- you have to sort of stick your head into the freezer and look back at the icemaker and it's right there. Not doing so may be the source of the horrible noises some have experiences when no water is hooked up and it WILL damage the unit too. If you are not going to use ice/water, turn off the icemaker before you even plug the refrig in and I suggest taping over the water tube fitting on the back of the refrig so it stays clean in case you change your mind at some point. Another thing that is not clear in the manual is how to use one of the settings on the control panel. You may have read how some say the refrigerator mysteriously has turned off spoiling the food. IN the owners manual it says to the effect: you can turn off the control panel by pressing and holding two buttons for three seconds and there's a 'note' adding that power to the refrig cannot be turned off from the control panel. I think most people, myself included, interpret that as a way to turn off the control panel without affecting refrigerator operation BUT JUST THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE. If you turn off the control panel, THE ENTIRE REFRIGERATOR SHUTS DOWN! It's especially deceptive since interior refrigerator lighting remains functional so the only thing you'll notice is the control panel lights going off (unless the compressor is actually running when you do it and then you may hear that it went off too, but it's so quiet you may not notice that at all). When I spoke to GE they seemed clueless that the wording was not only ambiguous but seemed to be the opposite of how most people will interpret it! So, just don't turn off the control panel unless you want to shut down the whole refrigerator and freezer! Apparently that function is intended for when you empty the refrig because you'll be away for months and want to turn the refrigerator (not just the control panel indicators, like temps etc) off without having to roll out the refrig and unplug it. Handy IF you know that's what it's actually for. One more minor thing to note is that the owner's manual shows this refrig as using the large MW (I think that's what it's called) filter cartridge that hangs down from the upper right back wall of the refrig. In fact these units don't use that filter -- there is a approx 6" x 1" bulge in the top back right roof of the refrig. You squeeze two tabs and a cover drops to reveal access to a much more compact filter -- probably goodness whether you do or don't hook up the water since the pictured filter takes more usable space than the actual implementation which effectively takes none. Some reviews have mentioned that the doors are noisy and I didn't know what was meant by that. I think I do now. Unlike old-fashioned single-door and newer side-by-side refrigerators where gravity and/or inertia will close the door for you, French door refrigerators can't do that because the mechanism between the doors is necessarily different. As a result you have to actually close the doors (vs just sort of let go as it's swinging closed). Actually you can swing it closed if you want to but must do that harder/faster than on non French door refrigerators which may jostle items in the door shelves, so it's just better to close the doors fully by hand vs swinging them closed. In any event, gravity will not close French doors. So aside from some owners manual inconsistencies and the inherent difference (and benefits!) of French doors, we are VERY pleased with this refrigerator. The overall design is clean and the layout is very functional and it's very quiet overall, though the sounds are different than our old refrig because this unit is much 'smarter' being able to run the compressor and/or fan at variable levels based on the perceived cooling needs, etc. Needless to say my wife loves it and that may be the most important thing of all!

Just over one year of owning this refrigerator, a sheet of ice started to form in the bottom of the freezer and water started to leak underneath the fridge. Guess what, this is only warrantied for one year after date of purchase. We were able to get this to stop, but another year later and the same thing is happening again, only this time so much ice accumulated in one day while I was at work that it has frozen the basket on the drawer so I cannot open my freezer. I now have to transfer all of my food in my refrigerator to a mini fridge and turn the whole thing off so that the ice thaws out and everything in my freezer goes bad. I then have to take apart my freezer to get to the drain and pour warm water down to thaw it out. I refuse to pay someone to come out and fix this because it should be covered, because it shouldn't be happening. This is not a problem someone should have on a new product. Growing up we had the same refrigerator for over 15 years and never once had this issue.
