Questions & Answers

I was told that the water we drink will be a little salty with this system that I would need to install a water purfier under the sink is this true?

Asked by: Doll
This system as with any other system can have salt/brine or resin media leach through the heads when it is first put into use or over time as pistons, spacers and O-rings start degrading. If, right after installation, this will clear up in a short period of time. I install 20 micron filters prior to the softener and 5 micron filters after the softener to keep any resin beads from escaping into the water line with a new system and for latter protection of any failure of the head. 10 or 20 inch depending on usage amount. You may also experience a salty taste if you run your water during the regeneration process. Recommendations are to set your regeneration times to early morning ie. 0200 or 2 am when you are not using your water. In closing, the filters can be rather expensive as well as monthly salt for the brine tank. Always consider why you are installing a water system in the first place. If it is only to protect $50 in sink hardware, then it is cheaper to just replace the hardware every couple years. If you are protecting washer, dishwasher, higher end hardware in kitchen & bathrooms, then evaluate what you think it's gonna cost you to replace them and it may be a wise choice to run a softener.

Does a whole-house water softener and/or filters reduce water pressure? This concerns me because ...

Does a whole-house water softener and/or filters reduce water pressure? This concerns me because our utility district already provides only minimum water pressure -- I believe about 35 p.s.i. in the main lines -- and the district declines to increase pressure. We need one badly because my aging wife suffers from psoriasis and anything to soften our hard water could help.

After a few tries the 11 answers popped up. We just installed this and the flow rate on all of the faucets and outdoor hose bibs it's much lower than our old unit that we replaced from Culligan what is causing this restriction in flow and how is it rectified it is not satisfactory by a long shot thank you

Will this product plus the water filter addition fix my problem of having white residue on my dishes after i run the dish washer?

I also have a reddish brown residue inside my toilet bowls and my dogs water bowl which i think it is iron or maganese. Will this be fixed.
Asked by: Paul
Other's have answered the reddish brown residue. Further they have addressed if the white residue is from hard water. But my dishwasher troubles always stemmed from one of 3 problems, all of which can leave white residue and doesn't really have to do with water hardness: 1) water temp. Diswashing detergent is most effective at 150 degrees. Since most water heaters are set to 120, your dishwasher has to be able to heat the water to proper temp. If it doesn't, you get unclean dishes and residue 2) dirty dishwasher. I'm not talking just drop in a bottle of dishwasher cleaner and run it. But actually taking apart the interior parts and cleaning them all out. I was amazed at how much buildup occurs under the sieve and kept washing back onto the dishes, leaving a residue. 3) inefficient detergent for your dishwasher. I had an older dishwasher that just could not dissolve the tabs or gelpacks, leaving detergent residue behind that was either granules or a white film. Powder detergents left detergent granules on everything. For older dishwashers or ones that don't heat the water well (if at all), liquid detergent seemed the way to go. No residues. Water softeners can also help with this as softer water can dissolve detergents better.

Will it filter sediment?

Asked by: Robert
Sediment can range in size (Microns). Water softeners are not made to filter sediment from the incoming water. A sediment filter should always be placed prior to the water softener to protect your equipment down stream. Remember, your water softener and sediment filter work together in tandem to protect hardware downstream in your business or household. Many people fail to install a sediment filter with their water softener, and then experience issues with the internal pistons, spacers and o-rings in the unit.
