Hi Steve- Press the "Select Cycle" button for the desired wash cycle. The light next to the "Select Cycle" button will be lit to indicate which wash cycle has been selected. Yes, to cancel a wash, press and hold the Start button on the front for 3 seconds. Then close the door.
I think you are referring to the lights on the front that stay on when you open the door. At first I thought I should try to figure out how to shut them off. Then I realized they shut off on their own. It has become a non-issue for me.
