Does the clear turn yellow after time. I just removed all the clear caulk around my shower pan due to yellowing

Asked by: Kalle
The caulk itself does not discolor however there are things that can happen in a bathroom that can leave a brown reside that will bind to the skin of silicone caulk and might appear orangish. One is iron deposits in water, another is mold. Older water heaters can rust internally and leave smalll amounts of iron residue on any bathroom surface. If that residue reacts with chorline belach, it converts from a brown rust to black. The black is not as noticeable unless it accumumates in cracks. If you see any brown streaks or rings in your lavatory and tub, especially around the drain flanges where water sits overnight, it's time to replace your water heater.

Allen, yes you need a caulk gun for this version of Silicone II Kitchen & Bath. GE does offer a squeeze tube option also.

Customer Reviews

GE Silicone 2+ Kitchen & Bath Sealant is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 504.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Check the expiration date This is an excellent product so long as it's not old product. Make sure you check the expiration date before applying silicone to your project as the hardening agent can go bad as the product ages. While all silicone can go bad, this particular product seems to go bad quicker than others. I'm not sure why that is. You'll know it's bad when you end up with a sticky mess that won't ever cure. I suggest a quick test of the product to see if it'll start to dry, you don't have to wait the whole day, just see if it starts to get tack-free in 30 minutes...if feels like goo an hour later at room temperature then it's likely not going to harden at all. Paper towels and rubbing alcohol works pretty well to remove bad Silicone II for those of you that have learned this the hard way. Also, it does release methanol and ammonia during cure, so it will have those types of smell. They're strong at first, but they dissipate rather quickly like they would if you washed your kitchen floor with diluted ammonia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well... but BEWARE: FIRST COUPLE OF INCHES COME OUT CLEAR! I bought a tube to seal the joint between tub and tiled wall and wanted the very best I could get in a small tube.. bought the GE Silicone II in white. The first inch or so that came out of the tub was clear, so I then read the reviews ... added my complaint to the list and took it back to HD. We pulled another from the rack and the Paint Dpt rep allowed me to cut it open: same thing: first inch was clear. He said they sell a ton of it and so was mystified. I squeezed another inch to inch and a half out of both tubes and after the first two inches +-, it was white.. So if you buy this, be sure to squeeze several inches out before concluding it is all clear. I am not saying that others did not receive mismarked product, just that two of two I opened where OK, with a small amount of clear at the front. My tub joint seal took less than half a tube, so saved $4 from having to buy a gun tub, and it was easier to apply in the corners with the small plastic tube.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It really is mold/ mildew resistant!!! I had to caulk the hot water faucet that my apt mgr. did repairs on because he left it completely un-caulked when he was finished! I asked why, and he said it would be easier to open up should I need another repair done. (What?!@!) Anyway - glad this happened because I discovered this silicone clear caulk instead. The other 2 shower faucets develop that black disgusting mold around them no matter how I clean. This one (hot water) that I did hasn't had one black piece of mold yet! And that was 2 years ago!!! Gonna have the maintenance guy (his son who does a better job) do the other 2 with a new tube of this silicone clear while he's repairing the middle faucet. It really works. Trust me. I can't open my bath window because they are painted shut, so the mold not forming on that hot water faucet is exceptional. Buy this. You won't be sorry. And it is easy to work with once you get the hang of it. I used my fingertips to spread, then cleaned up with pure acetone. Took a shower that night (about 8 hours later.) No problems.

I just installed a frameless shower door and used this in several installation steps. For large tasks the 10oz tubes are more economical, but this small tube can apply very thin and even seals for finish work.

The left over that is spread onto your material should be wiped up so the finish will not look shiny. Good consistency and it stays put.
