The answer is a bit convoluted but we are talking about Energy Star which is a government program. Not all 24 inch GE fluorescent fixtures are "Energy Star" compliant. This GE light fixture is actually a series of the following four sub-types. 18" \ 24" BASIC GE fluorescent which is NOT Energy Star rated. 18" \ 24" ADVANTAGE fluorescent which is NOT Energy Star rated. 18" \ 24" PREMIUM fluorescent which IS Energy Star rated. 18" \ 24" PREMIUM (Linkable) fluorescent which IS Energy Star rated. The linkable option is designed to facilitate the easy linking of multiple instances of this particular fixture. Generally the boxes are color coded. If the box your fixture came in is GREEN then your fixture is Energy Star rated. If the box your fixture came in is BLUE it is NOT energy star rated. On the narrow long side of the box there is a Check Mark table with columns that indicate if your 18" \ 24" fluorescent which IS or IS NOT Energy Star rated.

There is one on Amazon for hundred and fifty bucks so you might as well buy a whole new light for less than that and have a left over fixture for use in the garage without the cover, that's what I did.

I just bought this light to replace the same light I bought 3+ years ago. I use it on top on my 7’ book shelf to brighten the space between the shelf and ceiling. Makes a huge difference in the room. We leave the light on 24/7 so for it to last over 3 years amazed me for the great price.

13 watts isn't bright enough for the closet
An electrician said the 24” would be good for our 6’x4’ (lxw) bedroom closet. Perhaps the electrician has night vision because 13 watts is not enough for our setup. And nowhere on the box does it mention they can only handle a 13 watt bulb max. These are hardwired inside the closet above the doors and my closet is so dimmly lit at the bottom I can’t see my shoes. It might work better if mounted differently somehow. On a positive note, the light isn’t bright enough to awaken my other half on the dark winter mornings. The fixture itself is fine and no flicker or hum as advertised in our case

It is made of plastic, so it is vary light weight. it also has 2 sets of mounting holes, but lets face it, it is just a under cabinet light so it does not take a rocket scientist to use. It does come with a normal white bulb. Now to show some thing a bit more complex you can use it for. For my 10 gallon fish tank I wanted a light that would work with the new glass top cover I got at a online pet place. as most of you may know mostly with 10 gallon tanks they have a cheep plastic top with 2 built in light bulbs and eventually the sockets wear out and you now have a top that you can not longer put bulbs in. In the pictures you will see I cut out the bottom plastic under the bulb so the plastic shield still fits on the top over the bulb. and the bottom is open, now when placed on top of the glass top on the fish tank, light from the bulb shines down into the tank through the glass top and the plastic cover illuminates the area as well. In the last picture I have removed the plastic cover and turned the fixture up side down with a reptile bulb installed, the bulb is the kind this fixture can use being a 18 inch 15watt T8 bulb 10.0 uvb bulb. the purpose of this is the bearded dragon needs the uvb light from the bulb and the plastic cover would trap the uvb so none would be able to escape the cover. So this fixture can be used for more then just a under cabinet light.

18 IN. FLUORESCENT LIGHT FIXTURE
I bought this light for under my cabinets in the kitchen. My work area is rather dark without it., since my old (probably 40 year s, florescent) one died. I couldn''t use the screws to hang it since the shelf was too thin. I ordered industrial strength (so they say) velcro strips, on Amazon, and used 4 sets of the 10 in the package to hand this. It worked perfectly. I used this picture when reviewing the velcro strips. I'm very happy with this purchase.
