Questions & Answers

Why does GE sell a housing that is obviously incorrectly dimensioned for the filter?

The mounting hardware cannot withstand the force necessary to compress the filter FXUTC enough the achieve a seal between the sump and head. I don't have this problem with my older unit. This is unuseabe, and going back to the store.
Asked by: Mark2fish
My guess is that they don't think they can make that kind of mistake (or at least cannot admit it), they clearly think their customers are just incompetent.

what's the wrench you recommend for this one? It's not a tool free system, I can not unscrew this.

Is there any particular wrench or I'll try with belt?
Asked by: Terza82
You need a sump wrench tool to loosen the filter (that tool is not included with the filter).

Without a filter installed the top (cap) screws down tight against the 'O' ring in the top of the canister leaving about a 1/16" gap, but with a filter inside the top will not screw down all the way to compress the 'O' ring seal and there is about 1/4" gap between top and canister. It leaks badly in this condition and no wrench tightening helps this condition. It is like the pocket indentations on each end of the filter are not deep enough to allow cap to seat all the way down? Anybody else have this problem?
Asked by: fairwindflier
I had a similar problem using a new GE GX1S01R filter housing with a new GE FXULC filter. The top and bottom gaskets on the filter appear to seat as evidenced by the circular marks on the gaskets. However, the O-ring seal on the sump doesn’t seat on the head hence, the unit leaks. I returned both the housing and filter.

Can I use 2 in series

I have a 30 year old RO system with a crack in the sediment filter attach housing. Could I use 2 of these for a sediment and taste prefilter to my existing RO filter? Would it be smarter to just buy a new RO unit?
Asked by: BigTex
Hello BigTex, We would recommend replacing the entire unit because you won't get the same performance otherwise. Thanks so much for checking with us. Have a good day!

Product doesn't come with any components, fittings, or even a wrench to tighten or loosen the casing. Not a novice at plumbing and have installed 2 omnifilter units similar to this one. Instructions call for 3/8" fittings then 3/8" tube which is oversized where 1/4" rigid tube will do. Filter cartridge does not fit well and won't center on the posts in upper and lower housing. lower housing seems to cross thread when trying to screw onto the top part of the housing and after a few tries, then bound every 1/3rd turn. Got it threaded and tightened with a wrench from another filter in the house. Tightened until lower and upper housings almost touched, ie fully tight. started to turn on water and the housing immediately allowed water to pass right through the connection between the upper and lower housing. tried to tighten, used plumber grease still leaking. was 10 days past return date so tossed in recycling bin. Will buy a replacement Omni-filter CBF housing instead.

System came with hardware to install plus a nice metal single counter faucet. Easy to change filters. After 18 years, the canister suddenly split from top to bottom flooding most of the house. Fortunately someone was at home when it happened, otherwise it could have been quite a disaster. I am concerned that maybe there are chemicals in our local county water system that, over time, detrimentally affect the canister plastic.

I have had this filter for a couple months while I searched for the proper connectors and tubing to connect it to a stand-alone drinking water faucet I installed in place of the sprayer on my kitchen sink. I finally got around to installing it and after some degree of trial and error with the plumbing, I managed to mount it in place without any leaks. Unfortunately my jubilation vanished when I installed the filter cartridge and found it impossible to tighten the spin-on housing enough to seal without water spewing out all over the cabinet space. I even tried using a strap wrench for extra torque and still could not tighten it enough, in fact I almost couldn't take it apart. The recommended filter cartridge appears to be too long and I'm about to disconnect the whole thing and return it to the store.

When I went to install the first filter (A GE filter, type 'C') in this housing, the housing would not seat on its o-ring. I confirmed that the filter was inserted correctly on both ends and tried inserting it both ways per the GE provided directions, but nothing worked. The housing needs to close another 1/8th inch for the o-ring to seat, and it cannot do so without substantial mechanical assistance; the housing is only supposed to be installed hand-tight. It might be a problem with either the filter or the housing, but they are both GE and I have no intention of dealing with these parts any further. I will be returning the assembly to the Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Filter Unit - Huge $$$ Savings on Filters Pros: - Saves tons of $$$ on filter costs. FXUTC filter is only $13, and you can buy other filters depending on your filtering needs. The unit pays for itself in 2 filter changes with the money saved. - I've used this filter for over 10 years in 4 different residences, and it never fails or leaks, so long as you know what you're doing. See cons. - Filter lasts a long time. - No fittings, tubing, connections, or faucet provided. Yes, this is a "pro" because why include things that you may not need/want? Buy 3/8" to __ compression fittings, tubing, etc. and hook it up yourself. You could also buy plastic "quick connect" fittings, but those will eventually leak. Brass compression fittings are a couple bucks more each. Do it right the first time and avoid potential water damage. Cons: - You need to torque it quite a bit to avoid leaks. Oil filter wrench makes it easy though. - Use vegetable oil on the O-ring help to avoid leaks.

I was never able to get the o-ring to seat completely and the resulting leak to stop. I've done lots of home plumbing projects, but this just does not work. I huffed, I puffed, I used washer lubricant, I tried the filter in both directions, I took it back for a refund and purchased the newer GE Full Flow Water Filtration System and installed it in minutes.

I wanted a unit that I could change the filter element frequently. I had to tighten this filter so tight to seal that I probably will not be able to open it when it's time to change the element.( This filter did not come with a wrench)
