Good afternoon, we'll be happy to help. The water level in the tank is normally not seen above the salt level. We recommend you make sure you don't have a salt bridge. You can find more information about a salt bridge and how to break it on 27 of your owner's manual here: https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/4f/4f754720-75ef-4e53-8b20-32cd4438e0ed.pdf - For this, we suggest you set your water hardness level to 5 since your gpg (grains per gallon) is 5. The unit will regenerate when it needs to. You won't be able to set how often the unit will regenerate, but you can set the time of day that it will regenerate, when it does. If you have your gpg set higher than what your water hardness actually is, then it should theoretically take longer for the unit to regenerate not shorter. We really hope this helps. If you need any additional help, we recommend contacting our Smart Water Innovations team at 1-800-952-5039 (option 1). - Guy@GEA If they're still having issues, they may wanna call the SmartWater Team at 1-800-952-5039 to see if they can assist further.

Hey there, thanks for reaching out to us. We suggest you set your water hardness level to 5 since your gpg (grains per gallon) is 5. The unit will regenerate when it needs to. You cannot set how often the unit will regenerate, only the time of day that it will regenerate, when it does. So, if you've got your gpg set higher than what your water hardness actually is, theoretically it should take longer for the unit to regenerate, not shorter. We hope this is useful information! Good Morning, What type of salt does this system take? pellets or crystals? Thanks, Ed

Asked by Ed January 19, 2021

Answers

Hi Ed - Thanks for reaching out to us about this water softener system! We truly appreciate your patience and are happy to answer this for you. This system requires the use of clean water softening salts only that are at least 99.5% pure. Nugget, pellet, or coarse solar salts are recommended! However, do not use rock, block, granulated or ice cream making salts, as they may contain dirt and sediments that can create maintenance issues. You can learn more about adding salt to your system on page 26 of your Use and Care Manual. We hope that this helps! -Eliza@GEA

my softner is making noices, no beeps but just a high pitched sound. What can that be?

The sound could be a sign the water flow has a restriction, make sure the water valve is fully open.

Hey Matt! Good question. We're sorry to hear of the issue you've encountered. Based on page 22 of your Use and Care Manual, we're seeing that you would press the MODE/SET button to first see the Pre-Rinse screen. You can press the MODE/SET button again to adjust the time for Backwash and then Fast Rinse after that. We hope that this is helpful! Stay safe. -Michael@GEA

how many gallons is the softener unit

Asked by bart October 21, 2020

Answer

Water softeners are not rated on actual static gallon capacity held in reserve but how much Grains Per Gallon (GPG) efficiency they can deliver in real time on demand softened water. That efficiency is going depend on how much salt is available and used.

Where is this made?

I installed the softener yesterday and now the brine tank already smells like rotten egg. Is that normal?

No it is not. If you are on a well do you have a lot of iron in your water? This is a softener and will not remove iron. Check your hookup to the water heater and be sure you are not back feeding the softener from the hot water tank. The tank is often filled with sediment that will stink like sulfur.

Mine sits under a shelf that is 52" high. That is enough to open the cover enough to add salt. Since you very seldom add salt it has not been inconvenient for me. The hinge point that he lit pivots on is 42" h and approximately 12" off the wall depending on your particular setup.

Good Brand & Quality
The wife and I are completely happy with this water softener. The fact that you can control it via wifi while away from home is another great feature.

Water softener
Water softener awesome easy install easy Easy programming we love it better than the old one I did a lot of research and came up with this one . Has a big holding tank for salt tell you when it’s close to empty . Can really tell the difference don’t be afraid to install it yourself it’s not that hard watch a couple YouTube videos read the instructions call the health service line for programming you will not be disappointed. How did operational for over a week now really can tell the difference In the water Quality

Softens the water and removes iron
I installed the GE GXSHC40N water softener myself. Installation was extremely easy. I've had it running for 3 weeks and it has definitely made a huge difference in the water quality. We no longer get any mineral build up or rust stains like we used to. I'd give it 5 stars if the "Smart" features were a little better. The "smart " app is quite limited in what you can actually control and monitor. If you don't need/care about this, GE sells an identical "non-smart" version for about $100 less. We have a lot of sediment in our well water, so I installed a 100-micron spin-down pre-filter, then the water softener, and finally followed by a 25-micron and then 5-micron cartridge filters complete with bypass valves at every stage. Water in our house has never been better.

So far, we are loving it
Install it was quite easy. I did it myself along with a 4 stage filter prior to the softener. As for installing the softener, all I needed was a male 1 inch nipple for the automated shutoff valve, the blue device on the inlet for the install. I used sharkbite 1 inch hoses for both in and outs to the house as well but that’s optional. Set up was a breeze as I just followed instructions in the manual. Setting the hardness is about the toughest part and will take time as you can adjust the hardness from 1-125. I started at 100 and went down about 12 times and is currently sitting at 43. Higher you set it, the oily feeling is more apparent and you will regen every night which uses a lot of water, 37 gallons and some salt. I need to have my water tested. I seldom use the smart feature now as I’ve been in my garage working on many projects and have been able to just walk up and go through the settings. Love it so far and would recommend. Definitely saves space compared to normal softeners with a separate brine tub and tank

Awesome softener. It’s really good
I have compared the water quality with some of my friends softened water and I feel super happy with my water quality

Softens water
Unit is quiet, softens the water as expected. I have the electronic shut off connected. I also have the app that tells me how many gallons of water i use daily . I can see if the water is flowing even when I’m at work and it reminds me when salt is needed. I turned it against the wall to save space.

Modern Water Softener
I bought this water softener mainly for the Wi-Fi remote features. It replaced a 10 year old water softener. I have no problem to install it by myself but it requires you to buy an a 1" MNPT nipple for connecting the remote shutdown valve. The instructions manual doesn't show you how to setup Wi-Fi and the app you have to call an 800 number, but a technical service person assisted me with no waiting time. IN 10 minutes, I completed the Wi-Fi and app setup.

Works Great and Easy Install
Not too bad of an installation since the house came pre-plummed with a loop in the garage. Shark bite hoses made it even easier. No leaks!
