I installed the line onto a new refrigerator and ran the water through a few times before I tasted it as per the instructions that came with the refrigerator. The water tastes fine without a hint of plastic just like my old copper tubing.

Just replaced my refrigerator supply line with this one. It is my opinion, that the 5 year replacement recommendation applies the inexpensive "white plastic" supply line. This is the type that I replaced after about 8 years. It was starting to turn yellow. This is when the tubing becomes brittle and can crack or break if disturbed. This replacement line is of a much higher quality. I understand that the interior tube is made from PEX, a material that was designed to replace copper piping in homes. That would not happen if people using PEX water pipes needed to replace them every 5 years. Also, the braided metal covering over the PEX tube is the same design used for flexible water supply lines to sink faucets. It reinforces the plastic pipe inside with the metal braid, probably giving it a higher pressure rating. I have a home on a rural town water system that is known for it high water pressure. I regularly had pipe to faucet supply line failures before I started using the ones with the metal braid reinforcement. With the better "anti-aging" properties of PEX and the metal braid jacket, I do not expect I'll need to replace this line for at least 10 or 20 years. (Qualification: I am not a plumber or a pipe designer. I am an engineer by training and tend to have an analytical perspective on things around the house.)

What is the outside diameter of the fitting

Asked by KA June 2, 2017

It's a standard 1/4 inch compression nut, so about 9/16" OD and 1/2" across flats.

What is the diameter of this line; how wide a hole do I need to drill to run through floor or wall?

5/8" drill bit is what I used to install mine.

We have problems with our water line constantly freezing over. Will this one keep from freezing?

Asked by Famof5 January 30, 2019

Probably not. This supply lineis neither heated nor insulated. If your water supply line runs thru an area that gets cold enough to freeze, you might want to consider using "heat tape" along the length of supply line in the exposed area. Get one that is thermostatically controlled so it only turns on when cold enough to freeze. I would put a layer of polyurethane pipe insulation over it as well.

Can this hose be installed inside walls?

I believe so, providing the space needed. We ran ours behind cabinets and dishwasher.

Installing a new refrigerator this week and of course you want to put a new water line on it. I did buy this new this week, but it is the very same line as I am replacing which I have had for around 11 years. Length allows you to move around your fridge without yanking it off the wall and the braided cord means you will not be crimping your line. You are not likely to have to buy one of these very often, I recommend you spend the little extra money and get some piece of mind.
