4 in. Potted Bog/Marginal Corkscrew Rush Pond Plant

I purchased these bog plants with the hope of building a pond bog. I had not done my research and did know the pond has to be built around the bog. My pond was built years ago so this wasn’t an option. At the last minute I purchased two mesh baskets and a brick of hard soil. I planted eight plants in the two mesh baskets and they are sitting up in my waterfall. They have been in there for two months and I have not had to add any chemicals. They get full sun all day. They started between four and 6 inches and some are now almost 3 feet tall. One day these look dead and the next day they are green. Must just be the way they grow.

I bought my Corkscrew Rush, or Juncus effusus spiralis over two years ago, initally for an indoor Fairy Garden as a background plant. It grew quite well indoors but I had decided to take the garden outside and add different plants to it that were better suited for the patio. The Corkscrew Rush, or Juncus effusus spiralis outgrew the container I had it in and we had started a small pond. It now lives at the top of our waterfall which is a plastic form and I planted it just outside of the form. The long corkscrews as they grow will dip into the waterfall as the wind blows them over or the birds try to land on the thinner spiral's. It winters over quite well and it's already starting to shoot back up again, ready for another season. I trim away anything that breaks or dies back to keep the whole plant looking its best. I have another formed single spillway filled with stones and my husband made a copper pipe and spigot which splashes onto the stones. It's actually part of the filtration system that we can empty some of the water from the pond if it gets too much from rain or we have to clean out the liner, or use some of the pond water to water the landscaping plants to put fresh water in. Behind this liner will be a perfect place for another plant of Corkscrew Rush. This is my third season with this outside, I have to say that I really love it! It grows where you plant it! Later in the fall, as I begin to pull all the dead pieces out, it starts to look like it will never come back, because when it goes it goes fairly quickly (depending on how cold your evenings get of course) but I never removed all the corkscrews totally (only because I wanted to remember this year where I planted it and see if it would come back) It's looking beautiful already! It grows in pots, planters and around water but I haven't placed it into the water so I can't say if it grows well "IN' the water. It is a beautiful and very different plant then the everyday flowering plant or green leafed plant. Adding this one to your pond area or garden will have people asking you "Where you got it from?" "How hard or easy it is to grow?" and "Do the bugs like to eat it?" The answers are simple... Home Depot, Easy, and NO!

The plants were wrapped in plastic and partially dead from heat when they arrived. I am hoping they will survive (what was left of them).
