Can thegreatstuffforcracksbealsoused for window sealing fromdrafts
Asked by: Mkb
Hi Mkb, while GREAT STUFF™ Gaps & Cracks could be used instead of using GREAT STUFF™ Window & Door it remains harder than Window & Door does and could bow your window frame. We would highly recommend you use GREAT STUFF™ Window & Door rather than Gaps & Cracks.

One tip is to always wear gloves and to wear clothes that you don't care about when you are working with this product. Another tip is to apply it in layers and allow each layer to partially dry before applying the next. This product starts out very soft, but gains stiffness as it dries which will allow you to build it up in order to fill vertical gaps. If you dont allow the foam to partially dry it will be a lot more difficult to build up as the foam will be alot more likely to collapse on itself under its own weight. With that said, it works awesome for filling gaps of various sizes where few other products will work. My main gripe about this product is that it is extremely difficult to reuse the spray straw. For me its almost always a once and don't deal no matter how much product is left in the can. But with that said this is one of the best products for all purpose gap filling.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worse than opening a can of worms! I replaced 7 windows and the door wall, all needing to be reinsulated. This stuff is the best product for the job but having not used it previously, I was on the 3rd can before I learned how to control the monster. I recommend you begin by applying much less than you think you'll need. You can always add more after the initial expansion stops, but if you put too much into the gap it will continue to ooze out for 30 minutes or more and cause a god-awful mess on all adjacent surfaces. I also recommend you mask where possible and buy a quart of Acetone for cleanup, it's the only thing that is a solvent, and then only before setting up! Be careful what you apply acetone to, it's nail polish remover! Oh, and wear disposable gloves. I had some of this set up on my hands and like the directions on the can say, cured material on the skin will have to wear off. I had a yellow fungus-like blob on my hands for over a week. Beware.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I'm not a fan of it I personally don't recommend using this stuff around doors and windows. In my opinion, I think your better off using the tried and true method of fitting in pieces of fiberglass insulation. One of the biggest problems is written right on the can. It says that excess can be removed while still wet with acetone and once dry by mechanical means. Trust me when I say that if you get any on a good interior or exterior finish, you will never get this stuff off, the game is over. This is a serious problem when it gets on any surfaces that you plan on having a natural or lightly stained finish or any other finish that you cannot use hash chemicals or cannot be sanded (for example you get any on a factory painted steel or a fiberglass door. As I said before, the game is over! That's why I say I do not recommend using it. If your going to be using it on a location that this isn't going to be a problem, then go for it. since it does most definitely fill gaps and voids. I hope this review was of help

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great solution to seal XPS and Polyiso foam board insulation panels In addition to the typical applications for the 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff, this is a perfect solution for sealing the edges and joints of XPS and Polyiso foam board panels. It does not dissolve the foam board, and remains flexible as assemblies expand and contract each day. Attached is a photo of a recent project. We 'wrapped' the outside of a deep remodel in Massachusetts with 2" of Foamular XPS board, and sealed all of the joints and edges with Great Stuff. Then we applied a layer of DAP 230 sealant over the top, to make sure everything was air tight. One caveat: Like all versions of Great Stuff (including 'Great Stuff Frieblock'), it is very flammable and will ignite at just 240 degrees F. Do not install it near anything that might get hot, e.g. a furnace, plenum, fireplace, chimney, recessed ceiling light can, etc. I hope this is helpful, Mark

First, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!! You should have acetone on hand for clean-up and you must shake the can for 60 seconds before use. It fills in cracks and voids exceptionally well, but you should practice on something before using it on the actual project to familiarize yourself with how dynamic the material is. I enjoyed having it as part of my Home Repair Arsenal!

I filled gaps 1/2 way and 30 minutes later this garbage is still oozing from every possible opening and dripping all over my woodwork and floor. It will NOT come up even with paint remover or acetone. Save yourself some headaches and buy DAP latex foam. It's truly minimally expanding, soft, insulates well and extremely easy to clean up...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The ability to close the nozzle on... The ability to close the nozzle on end of tube, to save left over foam is a great idea. It has one short coming. When using it, it closes when you hit anything. This of course stops flow. Then you have to pull on nozzle to reopen tube. This of course sprays all over you from pressure built up in tube. Would of been better if it had screw on, but it's a start in the right direction to save left over foam.

The easy stop straw is good and bad...good to stop flow when moving from one place to the next...bad is that pressing into cracks will stop the flow of foam as the end gets pushed back to the off position. So you have to pull it out and start again. Nice yellow color ...weargloves and eye protection.
