Questions & Answers

The unit requires 230V voltage. How do you use it in US where household voltage is 110?

The unit requires 230V voltage. How do you use it in US where household voltage is 110?
Asked by: Vivienne
The main panel supplies 230 volts (nominal voltage may be 220 to 240 volt), from which 110 volt circuits are distributed to the common outlets and devices. 230 volts is available but an electrician would need to run a circuit from the panel to the air conditioner. The higher voltage is an advantage because the circuit can be run with smaller gauge wire than lower voltages. The actual cost of operation is the same whether 110 or 230 volt because you are paying for wattage, not voltage. Volt x amps = watts. For example, a 110 watt light bulb energized with 110 volts draws 1 amp. The same 110 watt bulb energized by 220 volts only draws .5 amps, but the wattage is the same, therefore the cost of operation is the same.

how many btu's do I need for a room 20x20

Asked by: donald
Generally we use 400 sf per ton for commercial work ( more people and more heat load) for a residential application it can range from 600 to 800 sf.(even higher in the right conditions). Use the higher areas if the space is well insulated, has minimum outside wall, thermal windows ( low e) . Generally you want to not over size an a/c unit as it only removes moisture when it runs. The removal of moisture (humidity) is the real reason for feeling comfortable. Too large of unit will only run for short periods, make the room too cold and still feel clammy.

Humidity Control

Does this unit also provide for humidity control? There can be very high humidity without high heat. Is there a setting for this or how would you address the issue?
Asked by: kl27
The short answer is "yes", however it requires explanation. The Terra unit has what's called "Dry mode" in which the A/C portion cuts it's output by half in order to cool the air twice as much. It's effective to a certain extent, but if you are having a high heat + high humidity situation it's more effective to just cool the room at a lower setting. I actually threw this humidity question towards several A/C pros, everyone of them used my question to try and sell me a "better" unit because apparently mine was under-powered to accomplish this task (not true). My unit resides in a F.R.O.G. The A/C can cool the room just fine, it's just that the humidity feels twice what the heat is. I finally purchased a dehumidifier which works great. If you live in the South/South-East do yourself a favor and buy one; they aren't just for basements. Had I done this years ago, I'd probably have saved myself a mini-split clean-up call from all the mold that grows when the unit is exposed to humidity levels over 60% for long periods.

Is there any way to get a replacement remote for this unit (GREE Terra24hp230v1a)?

Asked by: Ej
Sure there is, you can order it from almost any relevant website. Just list the model you're looking for in any search engine plus the words "Replacement remote". There are Gree brand ones and also third-party makers that are compatible with this unit.

Ultra Efficient 18,000 BTU 1.5Ton Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner with Inverter, Heat, Remote 208-230V is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Purchase EVER! Bought the unit last August, it seemed to operate OK at first. Within 3 months, it stopped working well, and my energy bill jumped. Then Winter came and I didn't use it, had it serviced in spring, and they found the controller board was bad. Not only did it take 2 weeks to get a replacement from GREE, the technician had a really hard time reaching them. Well we have replaced the board 3 times now, it still doesn't work. Home Depot is refusing to take it back, being over 90 days, GREE is unreachable, and won't return calls, won't return emails, no communication from them. I saved $1500 by getting this unit instead of getting a Mitsubishi or Fujitsu, and I am pretty sure that I will have put more into this unit, and then still 6 months later will have to buy a NEW unit to replace this one. So, Buyer Be ware... This is a junk Chinese product, with no real support in the US, no customer service, so definitely get the extended warranty if you decide to risk it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Constructed. A must buy. Beats The Competition I replaced a 18,000btu Senville Aura which was in my living room for only eight weeks. The Senville lowered my June bill which was 206.00 in 2012 with a temp setting of 81 using the Central American Standard AC to $137.00. with a temp setting of 71. And for the month of July the Senville struggled to maintain a temp setting of 74 at it's lowest setting and lowered my July 2012 bill which was $274.00 with a temp setting of 81 to $173.00 with an average temp setting of 74. I installed the new Tera myself the placed air handler in the exact same place the Senville was located to cover 500q ft. It's over kill and extremely quite. It easily maintains temp and dose not struggle and always runs in low to medium load or simply sleeps until it's needed. Be advised these units never turn off. They just merely run very slow. So far the Gree easily maintains temp of 72 with an average outside temp of 110 degrees. Be advised these units never turn off they just simply idle. I will update this review in 5 weeks with my 2013 August bill. My 2012 August was $325.00. I'm only expecting a bill of $150.00 or less.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this purchase We recently made an addition to an existing apartment in our barn. I researched as many of the mini-split systems as I could. Gree came in close to the top of each list, among professional installers, that I read. The warranty was among the best and the price was substantially less than the Mitsubishi that I had originally planned to buy. My installer said he really like the unit too. As for its efficiency - we have had weather that has required us to use both the heat & the A/C, both worked beautifully. This unit is so quiet we first thought is was not even running. The outside condenser is also super quiet, seriously you must really listen closely to hear it. This unit has only been up and running about 2 weeks so far - so I cannot speak for "long term" use. But I suspect based on the Gree warranty it will last for years to come. The apartment is about 500 sq ft, & very well insulated - the 1 ton seems to service it well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met some expectations, surpassed others. I went to the BM store @ Albany, NY and the woman that helped me was fantastic. Ordered this unit with some trepidation on whether the heating portion of this unit would perform as advertised. This part was critical since it would be the only source of heat for a small apartment. The unit seemed well put together and the install went smoothly. Got my vacuum and cranked open the compressor and into service it went, right in time for the second polar vortex. First thing was how quiet this unit is, both the indoor and outdoor. It's whisper quiet. I don't think I even needed the anti vibration pads I put in there. Most importantly, we've had 10 deg/f highs and -5 deg/f lows and this unit is still pulling heat for a 400 sf apartment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not ready for prime time poor customer support and poor manual I bought this product back in June of 2013 and I've had it now running for over a year. Twice the unit has leaked the 410A and needed to be reached due to a leak. The unit is also leaking water out the front right side on the air handler (the piece inside the house that blows out the air). I checked the drainage and that's not the issue as the water is coming out the side opposite to where the drainage hose is located. This was installed by a licenses HVAC tech however the costs add up for the 410A and trip charge for the tech. The good is I bought a Home Warranty for this unit after the first issue happened. So now its only a $75 charge and the 410A or whatever else is wrong with it is covered.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Simple Installation. My unit has been running for 2 weeks. Installed in an open area basement. No issues with the install or operation. The outdoor unit is so quiet, I actually thought it was broken--but just ultra quiet. I am commercial HVAC by trade. The service port on the suction valve has a 5/16" fitting that will not accept a standard refrigerant service hose. You will need to obtain a special 410A adaptor for mini-splits. I had to read the install instructions several times. The Chinese to English translation is not the best---but read it a few times & it starts to make sense. Wiring is simple. Main power goes to the outdoor unit. From there, it is routed back to the indoor unit along with one communication wire.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY GREE Bought unit dose not heat or cool. Gree has not certified mechanics and their warranty dose not covet maintenance just parts. Had this unit serviced and thoroughly inspected to no avail now I have a bill of $1800 and still no working UNIT. Gree explained soon as I can fined what's broke they will send a part but that's as far as they are willing to do their part. PS your not talking to an employee for Gree it's a general call line for many products. Installed unit on a house under construction. Took 6 months to finesh house and get power to the house. Units been running 2 weeks. Asked homedepot online if I can return the unit and was told "sorry about your luck we don't care if you put power on it today your past our 90 day window thanks have a nice day" Store Manger informed me he has sent a request to homedepot online claims to try and get a resolution. I told homedepot I would take a store gift card long as I can bring it back so I can buy a window unit. No hope.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality This Gree heat pump took me a week to install and it is working well. Negatives are: The manuals are written in Chinglish and require some interpretation. The installation manual is worthless so it's best if you already know what needs to be done or use a contractor with experience installing mini split systems. The list of factory authorized GREE dealers is very small so i'm a bit concered what Home depot will do if I ever have to make a claim. There are no factory authorized dealers within 500 miles of my location. I did the installation myself and then hired an HVAC company to leak test, purge the lines, and add the extra coolant needed for the 50ft line set, The electrical connectors could be improved considering they are for high voltage and subject to the outdoor environment. The connectors are more like what you would expect for a low voltage electronic device than a high voltage appliance. On the positive side, the unit started cooling right away and had no problems at start up. This unit has the highest efficiency rating and can heat as well as cool. A real bonus when you compare it to other manufacturers. Most competitor products are cooling only and cost the same. Too early to comment on the longevity of the unit since I just completed the install. The unit is nice and quiet an I am very pleased with the end result.
