I recently replaced our shower faucet valve with this fixture, and I am very pleased with its performance, and really love its modern sleek design, and the simplicity of operation. Operation: This product allows for diversion of water to one of two outlets, for example a shower head and a bath tub spout. I installed this in my master bath shower stall that has an overhead rain shower and a separate hand-held wand, so that I can divert water to one or the other of these by moving the large handle clockwise to service one fixture or counterclockwise to service the other fixture. The handle has a subtle detent between the two positions which is the “off” position (no water flow). Two small icons are engraved into the face-plate to indicate the direction of water flow, which are useful if your choice is a shower head or bathtub – otherwise they may not be helpful. There is a separate smaller handle lever to regulate the water temperature (clockwise=cooler, counterclockwise= hotter). You can custom set the knob to limit exposure to high temperatures; but by pressing a small override button on the temperature knob you can move the lever further counterclockwise to reach a higher temperature – a nice safety feature to avoid inadvertent scalding. I have ½” supply lines, and I had ample water flowing from both the rain shower and hand wand. The two concentric handles turned with a gentle amount of force, just enough that they will not move by brushing up against them. Installation: I installed the fixture myself, which required that I also purchase the Grohflex universal rough-in “mounting” unit, a proprietary product that this valve “plugs into” (see picture). Using the rough-in is NOT optional, because the valve itself cannot be fitted directly to plumbing pipe. Of course, if you have an existing Grohflex rough-in, you can use that. The accompanying instructions were well-illustrated, and although they are sparsely worded, there were several online videos that I found to assist understanding the installation process. My application called for replacing an existing (non-Grohe) fixture, which required me to do a fair amount of tile re-work and plumbing retrofit. I needed to cut into my existing shower wall tile to expand the faucet opening to insert the Grohflex rough-in. The rough-in unit was about 1/3 larger in wall surface area than my existing faucet opening (see picture). I am an intermediate level DIY, but I did not have a tool to cut ceramic tile in place on the wall – so I purchased a diamond-coated rotary bit chucked into my portable drill to cut into and expand the fixture opening in the wall. If you’re a DIY, expect to spend at least an extra hour or so to complete this part of the installation (depending upon the hardness of the shower tile and amount of cutting required). In all other respects, the plumbing installation was typical, using copper fitting, pex or other approved lines/fittings. The universal rough-in mounting unit takes up a lot of space behind the wall at about 6”w x 6”h x 4-1/2”d (see picture), so I also needed to cut through a stud to fit the unit and related plumbing. Water service can be opened or closed by operating two screws inside the rough-in unit, which is a really convenient feature when swapping out one Groh fixture for another. I also installed separate hot and cold line shutoffs behind the unit (in an adjacent closet area), to assist in my installation because I did not want to disable the water service to a whole section of my house during this installation (which took me about 8 hours total). Proprietary Design: The Grohflex universal design allows the user to swap compatible Grohe fixtures with relative ease, because the plumbing remains fixed in place, connected as it is to the Grohflex rough-in. This is a neat concept, but as a practical matter, how often does one change their plumbing faucet – and when you do, will the replacement also be a Grohe product that is compatible with the universal mounting unit? I suspect not so often, and when you do -- perhaps the product is from a different manufacturer. But . . . if you do purchase a new Grohe compatible fixture, the swap will be the easiest plumbing job you will probably ever do. Warranty: A pamphlet included with the product states it has a “limited lifetime” warranty. Apparently, the mechanicals and finish are warranted for life against defects under normal use by the original purchaser. There is a specific exclusion for damage to finishes caused by using cleaning chemicals. This begs the question, what is “normal” use, and who makes that determination? But also, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use a cleaning solution of some kind in their bath area, so if the finish fails are you out of luck for having used a household cleaning solution? In my opinion, this premium-priced product should have a more comprehensive (exclusion-free) warranty. Bottom Line: The retrofit installation took a lot more effort than I anticipated, and if I had to do it over using the Grohflex rough-in, I’m not sure that I would. However, for new installations, there is a lot to be said for installing this product. It is solidly built, operates flawlessly, and it’s fashionably designed. The warranty is of questionable value. This is a handsome, well-made product which I would recommend for new bath installations. Expect a more challenging installation for retrofit installations.

I will admit I did need to have a plumber install this for my shower but it was worth every penny. Having grown tired of poor-quality shower valves that are difficult to adjust and just don't last, I have made the switch Grohe. They make the utmost elegant shower valve systems, and the quality is unmatched from what I have experienced so far. The biggest convenience with this kit, is that it always me to make fine adjustments to the temperature of my water, so that I don't have to keep fiddling for that sweet-spot for hot showers. I will continue to use Grohe products in the future because I know they will last and keep our family satisfied with our home's plumbing fixtures.
