Q:My lawn was filled with weeds most of which I pulled out. If I spray weed killer to kill the rest will it stop the clover seeds from growing? Is it also it?s a weed? Also can they just be spread out on the ground or do they have to be dug into the ground

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your question regarding the White Dutch Clover. Be careful what type of herbicide you apply if you want the clover to survive. Non-selective broadleaf herbicides should be avoided, as they will kill clover along with any other plants on which it is applied. There are certain herbicidal ingredients which do not effect clover. Look for a product containing 2,4-DB (butyrac), Sethoxydim, or Clethodim to control weeds and crabgrasses without harming the clover. Spreading the seeds evenly over tilled soil will produce the best results, After you spread the seed, gently rake them into the soil to provide better contact.

Grown up on a rocky clay slope
I hand spread a bag of the seed on a hill with ~20 degree slope, which comprise small/big rocks and clay. Then I just leave the slope as it is. It took 3-4 weeks, with several rains, until the seeds sprout. I am very satisified with this product, indeed I didn't expect it is so easy to handle.

I was sent less product than listed
I didn't actually have a pound of clover seed in the bags from the company. Also the company rejected my first review so it seems they don't like complaints. The reason there was less than a pound was because the seed bag wasn't sealed it just has some string threaded through the opening.

Product arrived on time and was as advertised. I have planted a few test areas and have not seen good results. Pretty sure that it is user error rather than any defect in the product.

                White dutch clover
I planted the clover shortly after recieving product. I had scraped bare soil with rake and then spread the one pound package. Sprouts came out within two plus weeks but no flowers. Not sure why?

Seeds started growing, then plants disappeared. Maybe it was too hot?

Thank you for taking the time to review the White Dutch Clover. We are truly sorry to hear that this item failed to survive for you. One factor that can greatly affect this item while it's getting established is that it needs to stay moist. The soil should be kept most for at least the first two weeks after planting. Then, you may need to water during the heat of summer to keep it green. Please contact Home Depot Customer Service if you need additional assistance with your purchase. Contact information can be found under "Customer Service" at www.homedepot.com.

Got two types of clover to cover our yard and see which we liked best. The other type worked beautifully, these seeds didn’t give a single sprout.
