Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow. Get this. If you've ever needed to remove a tie rod or ball joint with the intention of reus... Wow. Get this. If you've ever needed to remove a tie rod or ball joint with the intention of reusing it, this is the cat's meow. Fits perfectly, doesn't damage the boot. At first I wondered why the upper jaw of the tool is designed to angle down when in use. I realize now it's probably so the tool doesn't shoot across the room when the joint lets go. It just remains in place. Nice. I wondered a little about the quality of the male and female threads so I thoroughly greased them prior to use and didn't feel any grating or see any metal flakes from wear. Two more tricks: 1. Place a penny or other soft metal between the tool and the top threads of the joint to protect the threads of the joint if you're reinstalling it. 2. Turn the separator screw until there's pretty good tension on the joint, then be patient. If the joint doesn't eventually separate on its own, apply some more pressure. It eventually/usually lets go. You can also just keep turning until the joint separates but in my opinion this places undue stress on the tool threads and makes for a much larger 'bang' when the joint lets go.

I bought this ball joint separator not wanting to use a pickle fork that usually shreads the rubber seal and didn't want to pay what the car manufacture sells their separators for which looks like this one, so I bought this Gearwrench universal separator and for the small price it cost it turned out to be a real champ, and it has two positions one for small ball joints and the second for the bigger ball joints. Good investment for your tool box.

Needed the right part for the job to spread ball joints on my 2000 Boxster S and tool barely did the trick, but tool got'er done and that's all I care about. In the end this tool was a problem solver as I did the job in the time frame I had and everything worked out. 5 stars I'm sure it will come I handy next time I replace a drive axle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Haven't used it on really big ball joints yet, but... Haven't used it on really big ball joints yet, but worked perfectly on the quad. Nice to not ruin the rubber boots when you're separating them but not replacing them.
