Turn off all your breakers. When you hook up generator with the cord generlink supplies then start the generator it will switch off line power to generator power to run your test. Turn off generator when done and it will switch back to line power.

WHY DID THE MANUFACTURER CALL ME TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS BEFORE SENDING AFTER ORDERING??

Asked by bg58 November 10, 2020

Because the GenerLink is a very unique piece of equipment and is installed in the meter socket. We must phone every customer to verify who the power provider is to ensure we are following their guidelines for this device. All power companies do not allow the GenerLink to be installed into their service area. If you have any additional questions, please phone our office at: 800-886-3837. Global Power Products

Is this Product ok to use in Seattle wa area.

Asked by Dogwood October 20, 2020

Answers

I would say yes. The manufacturer is in Georgia (USA), which is a fairly humid area, as is Seattle. Check with your local utility company to see if they allow the device (some utilities don't). I'd also recommend (read that REQUIRE) that a licensed electrician install the device, as a neutral wire has to be properly connected from the Generlink at the meter service. Also, you MUST use a proprietary Generlock power cable with the transfer switch. This is an extra cost item if you need a cable longer than the standard 20 foot cable.

will it work with a 4375 max watt / 3500 running watts generator ?

Asked by John October 19, 2020

Answers

The generator must be 240 volts with a 4 prong receptacle to make the GenerLink function. We recommend the generator being between 4500 - 10,000 continuous running watts. You can't use adapters or extensions with the GenerLink. It will not function. You can find a list of compatible generator on our web page; www.generlink.com "choosing generators", or you can phone us directly at: 800-886-3837. Global Power Products.

Contact your local utility and ask them. Also you can contact the Generlink folks at Global Power Products. (Point your search engine to Generlink.) They can 1) tell you if your utility allows their products, and 2) tell you if your generator is compatible with the Generlink products.

Well engineered product perfect for certain applications
I live in an area where Interlock kits are legal however my panel was full. In order to accommodate a generator interlock, it would take quite a bit of rearranging and switching some breakers to mini breakers. Combined with the labor costs of an inlet box and running the appropriate wiring, it would have been a bit costly. My other option was a transfer switch but I didn't like how this limited me to a specific set of circuits and didn't offer the flexibility and choice or circuits that an interlock did. I came across the Generlink product and it seemed to combine the flexibility of an interlock/inlet combination, along with extreme ease of installation. The option to add whole house surge was another great feature the Generlink offered. It seems this product is more common in Canada than the USA since apparently interlock kits are not to code in Canada so many of the utility companies offer Generlink as an option to customers. After contacting Global Power Products (where a live person answered the phone immediately!) to learn about the install process and if it was legal in my area (CT served by Eversource), I was happy to find out it was approved in my area. The rep talked me through the order process and sent a list of approved electricians. The item must be shipped directly to the electrician. Luckily my regular electrician was approved and we ordered the 40amp with Surge Generlink with a 40 ft 50amp connector cord. I was quoted 8 weeks from time of order for shipping. Since the Generlink uses a proprietary connector on one side be sure to order a long enough cords. Global Power Products offers a variety of lengths. About 6 weeks later, it shipped (earlier than quoted) and my electrician began the paperwork or getting the meter removal request. This took a few days but once that was approved they were able to come out and install. It only took about 45 minutes and other than flipping the main breaker off to ease the installation, was done entirely outside. A few days later an Eversource rep came out to take a look at the Generlink and put their locks back on the meter socket. Tested it out this weekend and it really couldn't be easier. Flip all breakers off on your panel (except the Main breaker, that is left on). Plug the cord into the generlink and your generator, start it up and flip the breaker on the generator, give it a minute, then verify the blue "Alternate Source" light is lit on the Generlink. Then head inside and slowly begin turning on your circuits of choice keeping in mind the limits of your generator and the generlink (40 or 30amps depending on which generlink you get). For my test I powered circuits for my two fridges, gas boiler system, and a couple others (TV, modem, router, a few lights etc). Everything worked great with my Firman tri fuel generator. Make sure your Generator is on the compatible list on the Generlink Website or if you're not sure just call them. It has to have a 120/240 output along with a few other requirements. when we were done, we powered off the generator, unplugged the cords, and saw the "alternate source" light go off. Went back inside and powered on all our breakers as normal. All in all this is a really good solution for those who want the flexibility of an interlock but have a full panel or one that wouldn't easily otherwise accommodate an interlock or if an interlock isn't approved by code in your area. The option of whole house surge is a great feature too as this protects both on utility and generator power. If you lose power often enough that you want to have a single cord connection but not enough that a whole house system is what you want, this is a really well made product with top notch support and customer service.

I called a generlink factory rep for my state first to make sure our utility allowed it and my generator was compatible. After I ordered generlink called to see what generator I had so they could send the right cord. Cord is included in price. Received items and called utility company. Person on phone did not know what this was and kept saying they do not hook up generators. Finally convinced them to send out a service man. He came 2 days later and said he never seen one of these before but called their meter guy and he said yes it was approved and he could install it. 10 mins later it was installed and ready to use. Utility company did not charge anything to install. Tested with 11,000 watt peak portable generator and this is the way to go. You can then turn on the breakers you need and switch breakers as needed. Price seems high but with cord included, not having to hire a electrician to wire in a transfer switch, and the flexibility of using any of you breakers, this device is worth ever penny. Hopefully it last for very long time.

I had to use this today because of an ice storm in Virginia. It worked flawlessly with my 10KW Generator. Previously, I emailed GenerLink about warranty information (and how to register the device) and I felt like I was talking to my 'big brother'. It seems as though all you need is the serial number and if the device fails, you're covered for 7 years. I do not work for GenerLink... It's a very nice unit! I did not have to add another circuit-breaker box or hassle with any extra wiring!

Response from GenerLink TeamNov 21, 2018
Tim, thank you for your feed-back on the GenerLink. Yes, we track all units by the individual serial number, so there is no need to register the device once you receive it. However, we do encourage you to write the purchase date and serial number on the inside of your operation manual for future reference.
The GenerLink is designed to be used anytime, so you don't have to wait on an "outage" to test your GenerLink. Please test about twice a year.

I purchased this item last year at the recommendation of our electrician to be prepared for power outages in the future. You do need to talk to your power provider to ensure that it is approved by them for installation and use. Our electrician came over and installed the unit in less than an hour. We had our first opportunity to use it this year and it performed exactly as I hoped it would. We were able to run our fridge and freezer, as well as the hot water heater and some lights and outlets. It was very simply to hook the generator up to the GenerLink unit. I would highly recommend this unit to anyone living in an area where they are approved for use.

The Generlink was easily installed by a licensed electrician assisted by a utility company representative. It worked as specified when backup power was supplied via an 80 foot Generlock cable from a portable generator. I'm very satisfied with the products.

We are sorry you feel the GenerLink is expensive.. The GenerLink is a low cost transfer switch and very easy for the homeowner to us with their portable generator compared to the high cost a contractor will charge to install a traditional manual transfer switch. Please REEMBER to test your GenerLInk at least twice a year while you have utility power to the home. Phone our office at: 800-886-3837 if you have any additional questions.
