Should this generator be powered up and run on a regular basis?

Asked by: Inexperienced User
Generac recommends exercising it monthly. I am working on a 60-90 day schedule base on what i've read on the internet. I cannot advise you to disregard the manufacturer's guidelines, it's a personal choice.

is the propane tank connection the same as barbeques and are the tanks interchangeable? Also can the unit be used in rain or snow?

Asked by: Long Island Guy
The connection is the same as a bbq tank, Generac recommends 20 or 30 lbs tanks. I got a generator tent for mine as it is not recommended to operate in the rain or snow and needs to be 5-10 feet from the house due CO emissions.

5,500-Watt Propane Liquid Powered Portable Generator is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 99.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Generac LP5500 Power Dial for all functions. Detachable hood for engine maintenance We purchased the Generac LP5500 (made in USA) which is the propane model because we didn't want to deal with gasoline. The Generac portable generator starts right up and is easy to handle and with the GenTent Canopy is a combination that can't be beat (see picture)! Prior to our purchase we checked out all types of covers to keep the Generac dry. Living in Florida and it's environment we purchased a GenTent Safety Canopy from Mark Carpenter (made in USA) - the best way to keep the portable generator safe in wet weather outside with the proper ventilation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PROPANE is a great you can store it better than gas. Propane is great you can store and it will not go bad like gas but Propane has one bad point I live in Minnesota and it gets cold hear if your tank go below freezing it wont work as well so you have to keep you tank above freezing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! Easy to set up and was able to hook up to a 150 gal. propane tank with no problem, have not had to use thus for, but I know I'm ready in case of a storm.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Buy Buyer beware! Our LP5500 failed to start today after owning it for four months. We 'exercised' the unit for 20 minutes during each of those months. I called Generac customer service and the rep was worse than useless -- she told me to check the air filter and spark plugs. I researched local Generac approved service people and drove to a shop to talk to the repair guys. They told me that around 20% of the regulators on this unit are defective and need replacing -- and it's sudden death when the regulators die. Twenty percent! This is a catastrophic failure rate for a product that people buy because they need reliability. This diagnosis also means we have to pay for round trip delivery of the unit to their shop because we don't own a heavy duty flat bed truck ($60) They also told me that the instructions for starting this unit (printed on the machine) were changed by Generac: instead of a 5 second prime this unit needs 15 to 20 seconds, and instead of two pulls it needs three pulls. Don't you think the Generac rep should have known about the regulator problems as well as the changed starting instructions? We really regret this purchase. We bought it because we wanted a bullet proof back up system in case of a power failure to give us peace of mind. Now we're sucked into the black hole of a poorly built product and, just as bad, a poorly trained customer support system that is worse than useless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very satisfied, worth the extra $ for propane I ordered this unit because we do not regularly lose power for extended periods (once every few months for up to 48 hrs) and I didn't want to have to bother with extra gas left in the unit for extended periods. According to the math, it is more expensive to burn propane than gas but this was a temporary backup and worth not having to deal with the gas. *Also might be easier to find propane during power outages. Unit is: Easy to assemble from box. Easy to maneuver with the handle and wheels. Started with 5-6 pulls each time I started it. As quiet as most any other generator (like a push mower). I hooked it to the panel box and ran an upright freezer, refrigerator, window AC unit, well pump and all the lights in the house. I'm sure I can selectively run breakers to use hot water heater and washing machine, too. I hope the unit lasts for a long time. You might want a larger propane tank if you want to run it constantly (not a long runtime on a 20# tank)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CARB approved for California As of morning of 2Jun2016 Home Depot's website blocks this generator for purchase in California due to an error in their computer coding. The unit is CARB approved for sale in, and shipment to, California (although not for sale in the city of Los Angeles), and Home Depot is working to correct the error. It is one of relatively few CARB approved propane-fuel generators in this size range. Propane is an important consideration for a standby generator, because the fuel doesn't deteriorate in storage (and gum up the fuel system).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked as expected I had a little trouble starting the unit and getting used to the slow pull until hesitation is felt and then a hard pull. After getting used to the process the unit started after the second try every time Works great so far.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from already in the shop--hard to start seemed perfect , but being unable to start your generator is the same as not having a generator. this was hard to start from the beginning. It was delivered to my garage, I assembled it, and spent hours trying to start it. It finally started up, and I thought it was just a hard start for that first time. Then came the ice storm; power out. Again, I tried multiple times to start over several hours. I called the company----they said flooding propane motor was "rare" but could happen; also said maybe there was a "faulty valve". power went out at 6 am; last ditch attempt to start generator at 3 pm was successful for some unknown reason. I wasn't doing anything different. It ran perfectly for several days; 10 hours per 20 pound tank. I changed tanks within 5-10 minutes of empty , and generator started with 3 easy pulls every time. The last night, didn't change tank right away---maybe 3 hours after empty. couldn't get it started again that night or next day. had someone else try also---wouldn't start. so---now in shop for evaluation ( you will need 2 strong teenage sons or hydraulic lift to transport this 300 pound machine to shop for service---transport is not included in warranty). Obviously, I'm not happy so far, but if this hard start problem is fixed, I'll be delighted since it did perform well WHEN I COULD START IT !! Hope the warranty service won't be as hard to start
