I just bought a package of 50 button head Oak plugs at my local HD store. The package is actually labeled as Oak and looks very much like Oak (darker with grain). They also had similar button head plugs in packages labeled as Hard Wood that looked more like Pine.

There is a similar product from HD that will fit flat and flush inside of a half inch hole so you wouldn't need to cut off these half round decorative plugs...
