While attempting to renew the battery I lost the screw that secures the cover to the body and would like to know if I can purchase a new screw so I can once again use my caliper. Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much.

PETE, THE FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO KNOW IS THE SCREW'S SIZE. BUT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN IDEA OR WAY TO ESTABLISH THE SCREW'S SIZE, GO TO A ELECTRONIC FIXER SHOP THEY MAY HAVE SOME KIND OF SCREWS WHICH ELECTRONICS EQUIPMENT USES AND MAY FIT TO YOUR CALIPER. THAT IS THE BETTER WAY TO SOLVE YOUR SITUATION OR ISSUE. OK?

Customer Reviews

Fraction Plus 6 in. 3-Mode Digital Caliper is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Clear Step Up From Others of Similar Price Pros: The jaw faces are machined parallel and smooth, the display housing is metal rather than plastic, and the mechanism translates very smoothly. Only the LCD window, and maybe the scale, are not metal. Measurements seem very reproducible and accurate, within .001" based on feeler gauge reference; and there is roughly .0005" difference between the inner and outer edge of the jaw. It feels close to a professional tool. Cons: The "0.000" point will default to the current jaw position when the the unit is turned on. Thus you must re-zero before use. Also, I would like it to automatically turn on, like some other calipers, when the jaw is moved. Summary: At this price, the quality is unexpectedly excellent. This is a clear step up from other calipers of similar price that I own that are plastic (or even mostly metal), jaws off parallel by as much as .01", and have rougher movement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOOD TOOL FOR GOOD PRICE I bought this tool primarily to measure metal thicknesses in order to properly set my welding machine but I find myself using it to measure almost everthing. I probably use it more than any one thing in my shop. I tested it against known thicknesses and it was accurate. It always returned to zero when closing the jaws after making a measuement. My only complaint, which is hardly worth mentioning is the screw that holds the battery cover on is so tiny, I once dropped it and lost it but the good folks at General Tools sent me another one at no charge. Just need to be more careful. I could have spent much more money on a different type but don't think I would have a better tool. This is more than good enough and would recommend this tool to anyone that needs to make fine exact measurements on almost everything. I am considering buying a second one to keep in the house because I use it so much. Also, I rarely use metric but I like the fact you can change the read out from metric to decimals of an inch to fractions of an inch. Also, I seldom rate anything a 5 and I call it as I see it, so you can trust me when I tell you that my experience with this tool was exceptional, especially for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My first digital calipers Broke my 20+ year old dial calipers after dropping them on the floor one too many times. Rushed over to HD and grabbed a pair of these. Why did I wait so long. Much easier to read. I think I could have gotten the same caliper from an online retailer for less but would have had to pay freight and wait for them to get to me. I use calipers in my hobby every other day. Instructions are lacking and the one button appears to turn on and off even though there is another button labelled off and another for zero. What little instructions there are says to change out the battery immediately(?) with another one that it came with. I've left the one that came installed in and it seems to be working fine. It's not a Starrett but it doesnt cost like one either. More cheap stuff made in China and sold in the US. Wish HD would offer for sale more things made in the good ole USA. I would pay more but not 4 times more which is the price difference between this tool and one made by Starrett.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from General 6" Digital Calipers I can say that I love this unit. It is rugged except for the glass panel. It cracked on me within two months of everyday use. It is accurate to .0005", repeatable, and everyone I show it too wants to know where to get one. I would give this a 4 1/2 star rating. If General replaces the glass panel with a tempered one, it can be 5 star without question.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Average Quality Caliper Report these as "average" quality. Must remember to zero before use. I find that they don't always return to zero after testing a few parts with them thus you must zero before measurement of each part. Accuracy is fair when compared to other calipers on a precise gauge block. Their ideal use, for me, it items whose tolerance is in the tenths range.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great tool, but not for long As new, this caliper suited all my needs. However, within a couple of years, I noticed that the battery would be dead after storing the unit its original case for weeks, then down to days, all in a controlled environment. Late in the game, as it sat not being immediately used, I had to remove the battery, else it would run down overnight. Fresh batteries, different brands......no difference. The contacts had been repeatedly cleaned over time with no noticeable effect. More recently, I'd noticed that in the decimal mode, the unit couldn't be switched off without the unit turning itself back on. The logical approach was to insure that the lock was tight to prevent any movement of the caliper which would normally turn on the unit. It still wouldn't shut off, but only in the decimal mode. If set to metric, I could shut off the caliper, however the battery would still run down overnight. I insured that no part of the foam liner in the case could inadvertently press against any buttons while closed which could turn the unit on. Nothing found. In or out of the case, the battery still ran down overnight. Finally, the tiny battery compartment screw took a bounce when removing the battery after a day's use. That was that. After hearing a similar functional experience regarding battery drain from an unrelated hardware store employee using the same make and model caliper, I decided that it was time to toss the caliper. I expected a lot longer life without "fatal" issues. I'll find something else........

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Accurate enough, poor build quality These appear to be accurate enough for use around the home, but after only a few days of owning, the plastic screen has cracked. I take very good care of my things so this comes as a surprise to me. Would not buy this brand again.
