Questions & Answers

Can you bypass the safety sensors?

I assume the door will stop at any height if it gets resistance like something or someone in the way. But for my installation I don't need or want these sensors - it's a toolshed and only I use it. No children for miles. I live in a rural area, and we have frequent power outages, so I'm not thrilled about a garage door opener to begin with, but garage doors these days don't have a handle or a locking mechanism accessible from the outside. Garage door manufacturers assume everyone has an attached garage and the power never goes out - tell that to all the folks on the east coast last winter! Can you just not connect the sensors, or close the circuit somehow?
Asked by: robkonw
Yes, the door does not know if you happen to mount the sensors above the door or any other location where the beam is not broken. I mounted mine above the torsion spring.

Will this be powerful enough for a two-car garage door?

Asked by: Art
It's working just fine on my two-car door. My previous garage door opener was a 1/2 horse Genie and it lasted about ten years.

Is this door compatible to close a 2 car garage?

I am looking into buying one and installing it myself. but I have a 2 car garage.
Asked by: van12
Yes, I have a two car garage and it works well. I do have an aluminum door though. Not sure how it would work with solid door

Customer Reviews

ChainLift 800 1/2 HP Chain Drive Garage Door Opener is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 171.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Opener but Beware of Fatal Installation Error Great garage door opener for the price. Comes with 2 remotes and a wireless opener which is nice to have. Is fairly quiet and opens/closes at a normal speed (not super fast). During installation be absolutely sure that the carrier on the chain is on the correct side. If it's on the incorrect side of the chain it will not work and there's no way to get it to the other side. The directions do not mention this carrier at all. Be careful. * With the motor side of the rail closest to you the carrier should be on the RIGHT side of the chain. It needs to be able to lock onto the arm where the red pull handle is located.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great deal and delivered to my doorstep Husband and I installed together and no major issues. Boxes were cleverly numbered for each portion of the job. We didn't kill each other, so directions were easy :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good opener for the price. I purchased two openers. The installation instructions were very easy to follow. Its easier and faster to install with two people. It took me a while to install the first one since I couldn't get the door to close. It was my mistake since I failed to read the warning on the box as well as in the instructions that YOU MUST install the safety eyes first for the door to close. I was trying to use my old ones to save installation time. Of course they did not work since they were from a different brand. Anyway the opener works great eventhough its a little bit slow which I like for safety reasons. The opener came with two car remotes and one door remote which is a great value. Door remotes alone cost around $40.00. The only thing I don't like about is the range. I have to get very close to the garage door for the remote to work. And this is the only reason I gave it a 4 star rating. Otherwise I would have given it a 5 star. One more thing is I couldn't link my car's factory installed remote with the opener. I contacted Chainlift customer service and they tried to walk me through the steps. After about 15 minutes of trying it still did not work. So they determined that there was a defect with the remote that came with the opener. They sent me a replacement within two days from contacting them and it worked liked a charm. Great customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy Customer! My 25 year old Genie screw drive unit bit the dust. I was very happy to find this package deal online. Delivery was fast. Packaging by Genie was great! All of the parts are numbered in numbered boxes and well detailed in the instructions. I installed this myself, 60 year old 5'2" female, with the help of two ladders. The estimated installation time was way too short. Had to do a lot of customizing mounting adjustments. I worried that the power head wasn't mounted level with the lift end, but was pleasantly surprised that it was, and works great! A lot quieter than old unit! Had to go out of town, so haven't been able to get the keypad programmed properly. Hope to figure that out, but all in all, if I could install this by myself, anyone can!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beware of "Warranty"!!! Purchased as replacement for older Genie opener..Price and delivery were great...After 3 months the motor failed. I called a repair service to check it and repair if possible...NOT repairable..told me to contact Genie for warranty...I had a new opener ( different brand) installed and door checked for possible problems. New opener works fine. Contacted Genie regarding warranty...Told me to check unit while on phone with tech...I found that odd...but I did as instructed... After 3 phone calls they determined that the motor had failed...BUT blamed failure on door!!! NOT COVERED! OMG! They totally disregarded that the new opener was easily operating the SAME door. !!! All Genie customer service did was waste my time, lead me in a circle and be borderline rude. That opener has been trashed after less than 3 months..... SOoooo ..... BUYER BEWARE! The product is worthy ..but the warranty is worthless!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product, easy install This is my first time buying and installing a Genie opener. The product quality looks excellent and the unit installed easily. It is significantly quieter than my Stanley opener on my other garage door. However the only issue, and for me it is minor, the speed is about twice a slow as the Stanley. Overall I am very satisfied and it has been installed now for two months with no issues. I would recommend this product and I will buy another one when my Stanley gives out.

I replaced a builder-grade opener that was about 15 years old with this model. I'm very happy with it. It looks clean, it's fairly quiet, and it's very smooth. I like that it has a light bulb on each side as it provides plenty of light. I also really like the multi-function wall switch and that it came with 2 remotes and a wireless key pad. I was able to program my car's HomeLink to it in about 2 minutes. I had Home Depot do the installation so I can't speak to how complex that is, but it seemed to go very smoothly for the installer.

I bought this to replace an ancient "screw drive" garage door opener that finally gave out. I didn't install it but the handyman who did said it was pretty easy and he had it done front front to back in about an hour by himself. (note- he had to remove the old one first). Relatively quiet. I have a single story home and we cannot hear it from inside. I think the belt driven model would have been quieter but I was told that the chain type would more than likely last longer. Has been installed for 2 weeks and so far, so good.
