Can the rail be shortened? I've got about 7 inches shorter-than-standard space.
Asked by: Joshua
I looked at my installation and I believe that this door opener can be shortened at the header end. If I was in your situation, I would attempt to shorten the opener. Good Luck.

Is it loud during operation?

Asked by: Sarah
I would say it is not loud. Having said that, it is installed on a garage door that is directly below our "Bonus Room" over the garage which is where my office is. I can certainly feel the garage door in operation but it is in large part to the fact that it is installed on the ceiling of the garage and I am sitting immediately above it in the room. I seldom hear the garage door go up or down when I am anywhere else in the house. Hope this helps

I bought this Genie garage door opener in April 2018 and was replaced due to a shrill banshee wailing noise from the drive head. This malady was diagnosed by Genie as a known defect and the drive head was replaced. Read my earlier review on this issue. It is now November 2018 and the shrill banshee wailing sound is back again with the replacement head. Clearly the quality issues with the product have not been fixed. This is the bad news. The good news is that the model has been discontinued.

Old age set in and it needed to be replaced. It cost me $200 then and I was surprised that the replacement a Genie 0.5 hp screw drive cost less. It was installed in May 2018 and worked fine until it developed a shrill banshee wailing sound that emanated from the motor. First the good points about this product. It is so easy to program the remotes and Homelink devices. Unlike my Legacy, the new GDO used internal devices to control up and down travel limits. Programing same is very easy. The installation and owners manual are very good. Operationally, it works like a charm as you would expect from Genie. To fit into a retail box, the screw drive is segmented into three sections. These segments are connected together with mechanical connecting parts to form the full screw. I cannot envision these joints surviving for 28 years. And replacing the connecting parts is a non-trivial job. I called Genie customer support about the banshee noise. Their support has three levels and it took me three tries to attain the second level. Each time on level 1, they had me check proper installation, a very frustrating process: their note taking is poor. At the second level, this improbable conversation occurred: Tech: “You need to lubricate the screw drive; Me: There is nothing in installation instructions saying I should lubricate anything; Tech: Yeah but you gotta know GDOs need lubrication; Me: How am I suppose to know this, the service manual says nothing about lubricating the screw; Tech: Yeah but you gotta know GDOs need lubrication; Me: How does lubricating the screw affect the banshee sound from the motor?; Tech: OK lubricate the motor; Me: How?” At this point, the Tech referred me to the third level which is Genie corporate in Baltic OH. The expected phone call never came so I called Genie. The Genie corporate people genuinely want to help and will find a way to get to the bottom of the issue. In my case, the banshee sound is a known issue. Fixing it required me to drop in a drop or two of oil on a certain motor part. But this is fraught with problems if the oil flies off the part and contaminates optical components in the motor assembly. This is the reason the service manual says nothing about lubrication. Genie solved the problem by sending me a new head. It has been installed and works fine so far. Overall, it took me many man-hours to install this Genie GDO and to manage quality issues. You must be a serious home fixer to tackle this job. I have no thoughts that this unit will last 28 years as did my Legacy GDO. But at $180 each, it does not have to.

I thought the directions for installation were easy, but I had to take it all apart and redo after the first try.
