I need to install over shower tile. What size drill bit do I need to drill the tile?

Asked by Neil August 11, 2020

I don't remember the hole size of the mounting holes. I would get a 3/16 mason bit and plan on using 2" deck screws through the 3 holes on each end. Don't drill through the sheetrock with it. Stop after the tile and use an 1/8" bit to go deeper through the wall and see which holes have a stud or just sheetrock behind them. If you're lucky you might find a stud behind each end of the bar and get at least one screw into a stud on either end of the bar. The holes that only find sheetrock under the tile, I would use shorter grabber screws or drywall screws.

Can this grab bar be installed on a ceramic tile shower wall?

Yes. Just make sure that you mount it with a lead or plastic shield that goes into the backer board or thin set if there's no studs behind. Be careful drilling into the tile so that you don't shatter it.

Can this be used outside on a wall?

I don't see why not. Made of SS powder coated white. They also come in raw Stainless Steel or a brushed finish.

(What's this)
This grab bar is metal painted white. The bar is thick, 1 3/8” in diameter, ergonomically pleasant to hold onto. It’s smooth, not textured -- I like that feeling, and it's easier to keep clean than a textured surface. It’s stronger than a plastic bar. It’s not as cold to touch as unpainted stainless steel or brass would be. The package has illustrations suggesting the height to position the bar near a toilet or in a tub or in a shower. The galvanized mounting plates are covered after installation by an escutcheon at each end of the bar, making an attractive bar when installed, with no screw heads showing. The two round galvanized mounting plates each have three two-inch Phillips head screws, making six holes necessary for mounting the grab bar according to the instructions, and for the full 500 pound load bearing capacity. The instructions say “all screws must be firmly mounted into a wood stud”. The typical stud is 1 1/2” wide, and the the galvanized mounting plate is 3” in diameter. If you do use three screws, the two holes astride the bar are 1 1/8” apart, too far apart to mount securely into the same 1 1/2” stud. The mounting plate hole at the top and bottom (or right and left end) of the bar is centered, and its screw can go into the center of the stud. So, if you want the full 500 pound load carrying capacity of the grab bar, you’ll need to get sturdy wallboard anchors, perhaps the WingIts studless installation fasteners mentioned on the package. The package notes that the grab bar is compatible with WingIts studless installation fasteners for tile or drywall that will support 600 pounds -- far more than we need, for we just want something to hold onto while lifting one leg to wash it, and I’m wary of drilling six holes in my tile shower wall. We may mount it with just one large screw into a stud at the top of the top mounting plate and one at the bottom of the bottom mounting plate -- you cannot put a screw through the center of the holding plate, for you don’t have access to that. We’re experimenting with a suction-held plastic grab bar to find the appropriate location for our permanent grab bar, given that we’re tall and have no kids at home. This is an attractive, ergonomic grab bar, but it calls for six screws into your shower wall and will require drywall anchors that are not supplied.
