Can I fix a bench vise to the top?

Can I fix a bench vise to the top?
Asked by: SVK289
Yes, I have attached a 6" Wilton Bench Vise to my tabletop (same table) on the right front corner. Be sure to use a drill guide to be sure the mounting holes are perfectly streight. Additionally, also position your vise above the center of the leg to increase stability and so no alteration of the table is needed. Just drill, and mount. I used diamond plate under the vise (to protect the wood) before mounting. I have 120 degrees of vise movement, and it is perfect. Hope this helps!

The hardwood top says it can only support 80 pounds, that seems really like to me. Is that a typo?

Asked by: Trent
The bench is rated to support up to 3000 lbs. 80 lbs is not correct.

Customer Reviews

6 ft. Adjustable Height Workbench with Hardwood Top in White is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 692.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Have to return I almost never leave reviews but the quality of this particular workbench has really let me down. After carrying this upstairs and opening the box I noticed an odd looking streak in the surface of the bench. I didn't think much of it until after I set up the bench. The streak appeared to be a wood filler that one would use to fill gaps in joints used on the surface of the maple top to fill in a crack or gash in the wood. Sure enough, after just a week the filler started cracking and if I tried ( I didn't) I could easily just scrape the rest out with a fingernail. I posted a picture where you can see the crack and in the middle the filler has flaked out. I had not even used the bench at all and I already had a nice size crack in it. Also, there is 6 inch section of maple that had the wood filler in it too. Not too big of a deal on the later but I expected something better for $600. I called Gladiator and they said they couldn't help me. So it goes back to Home Depot. I will try another though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 6 ft adjustable hardwood granite workbench I am glad I got this workbench! It took a little time to get it for pickup, but I was in no real rush. There were a couple holes in the box, but the table is well packed. No damage at all. There are videos on YouTube under Gladiator to assist in assembly. Two HD workers loaded it into the bed of my pickup. Transported it home and moved it by myself. Once flat on the ground assembly took about 15-20 with everything out of the packaging. The pilot holes and hardware are good. Make sure you measure your height before turning it onto its legs. The tricky part is how to upright the table onto its legs. I did it myself, but I would get an extra person to help (for a 6-8 ft bench, the 4ft should be easy). I used the box underneath the legs to assist in moving it into my garage instead of pushing it on concrete. I set a lot of items on it already and it’s exactly what I needed. I am planning on getting other gladiator products now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Table - With Warnings After seeing reviews that suggested this item might arrive damaged, I had it delivered to my nearest HD store so I could inspect it first. I am glad I did. The first two tables arrived at the store damaged. Before reordering the table a third time, store personnel picked the good parts from the two damaged tables to make me one good one....or so I thought. After taking the table to my shop, I opened it to find the table top damaged in two small places, both of which exposed rough wood to the front edge of the table top. Here's the problem. The bamboo top is so hard, it's extremely difficult to sand the dings smooth. And I need to do that so workers here will not get splinters. Check your item closely for dings, especially the table top. And know it will not be easy to sand those dings smooth. The dings on my table top are still not smooth. Otherwise the table is top notch. It is very sturdy even with the adjustable nature of the legs. And it is nice and heavy, just right for attaching a vise for serious work.

I'm using this workbench as a table for my embroidery machine because it adjusts to just under 42", which is perfect for me. It's very heavy and well made. The top is very nice for something that's supposed to go in the garage. It would make a nice kitchen island as well. One of the holes in one leg did not line up, so it was difficult to adjust that leg. I switched with another leg and it worked better. Directions recommend 2 people to assemble, which is a good idea. I couldn't wait, so I put it together myself (67yr old woman). That part was easy. It is assembled with the top on the floor, then legs are added. No problem there, but trying to get it upright was another problem. It's very heavy. Had to use some Egyptian pyramid building techniques to turn it over. My advice here...get another person (or two).

The hammered finish on the heavy gauge steel legs and back-brace is thick and durable, the top is butcher-block thickness and it assembles in about 20 minutes if you do it solo. The height adjustability seals the deal!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A solid, heavy and heavy duty workbench This workbench is not fancy - no drawers, no storage, no moving parts other than the adjustable height legs. It is simply a solid, heavy duty work surface. The top is 1-3/4" thick, made of solid hardwood. The legs are tubular steel and adjustable, with leveling feet. It was fairly easy to assemble, and only took about 20 minutes. The weight of the bench is the largest concern. Moving it requires either plenty of strength or two people. Even the legs are heavy to move around. That weight just equals strength and stability - both good for a workbench. I added a shelf between the cross braces of the legs, made out of plywood. It works well and gives me some additional storage space below the bench. I really like the bench and can see it lasting forever. The leveling feet are a nice touch. My garage slopes (as do most), and the leveling feet resolved that without me having to shim it. I like that a lot. The only thing I would like to see is some kind of shelving or drawers under the top. The space is there, and it would make it a much more functional workspace.

They weren't kidding you need two people to assemble it. Nice and long for all my reloading accessories, BUT.... When bolting the press to the bench via holes I drilled in it I heard a funny crunching sound as I tightened the bolts and luckily stopped and looked at the 1/4" washers on the bottom of the wood and noticed they were compressing the wood and being drawn up into the wood so the wood is not as hard as it seems. I put fender washers on (wider) and that solved the problem. Thats the reason for a "4". The adjustable legs are a plus and it is very, very solid which was important to me.
