My ceiling had popcorn finish. I have scrapped it off. Can i use this product to prime, level any imperfections before painting?

Asked by: Janice
First off; It's possible that your popcorn ceiling contains asbestos, which can cause serious health issues if you disturb the particles. The process of spraying on the textured popcorn ceiling involved applying coatings that contained asbestos. Any popcorn ceilings that predate 1978 likely contain asbestos. Second this is a thin primer for drywall sheets, it doesn't fill gaps or imperfections, use a hole filler or skim coat with plaster. then a thicker primer paint. PVA is basically just glue and water used to stop the dry wallpaper from sucking the moister out of paint.

Can this be used on new drywall and painted with semi gloss latex enamel?

Asked by: Mo
Yes, that is exactly what it is designed for. Saves a coat of much more expensive paint. One coat PVA and two of a good paint on new drywall is perfect.

I painted my ceilings with primer/sealer and 2 coats of ceiling paint. The ceiling paint is eggshell. I would like to paint over it with PVA Primer and another topcoat of paint. I am planning on scuffing up the surface beforehand. Anyone see any issues with this? The reason I would like to do this is because I am having moisture problems in my attic and I need the PVA primer as a vapor retarder. Also, what is the perm value of this product?
Asked by: mike
Using the PVA is a waste of money. Just make sure the surface is clean and use a good quality paint. I used the Diamond line paint products in various sheens over this product and so long as dry time of the paint is extended it has performed well. That issue has more to do with the paint than sealer. PVA is pretty much designed to seal over new drywall/mud compound only - not for moisture but to keep the walls from sucking up an extra layer of much more expensive paint. If you really want more sealing than a high quality paint can offer look at the Zinsser 123 or Kilz sealer products but be prepared to pay handsomely for it. Short of that you will need to look at other types of barriers. As to the original problem, depending on climate and if you are heating or cooling, the barrier may need to be on the other side of the wall/ceiling. If unoccupied I woud vent the attic (if it is occupied and conditioned you shouldn't be having these problems an need to look at a de-humudifier and the barrier would move up to that upper envelope). You'll need in and out for the convection to work properly. Soffit vent coupled with Ridge venting or cut in vents. I have a solar powered fan in an application that doesn't allow adequate ventilation other ways and coupled with lower soffit vents it has been effective. You may also need more insulation up there to prevent the condensation in the first place. Make sure you are addressing the actual problem. Yes, I am a professional contractor with years of experience with these and similar products. Hope that helps. Dave

This is the paint to choose for first primer on a new drywall project with uncovered drywall mud and taping. It will feel watery and will look terrible as you apply it. Just give it 2 or 3 hours and will look great, and ready for your finish paint color. Received the next layer of paint very well. Could not believe it was the cheapest PVA primer avaiable and did such an awesome job!!

I don't use primer that much because others I have tried went on thin and it was hard to tell that it was there after it dried. This primer dried very white and opaque. It was easy to tell that there was primer on the wall. Sealed the wall board and mud well.
