Nest thermostats are designed to work without a C wire in most homes. But some systems may require a C wire for consistent power to your Nest thermostat. The Nest Power Connector is an affordable C-wire substitute for homes that don't have one. It doesn't require any new thermostat wiring. And with simple instructions, you can even install it yourself.
  • C-wire substitute for Nest thermostats: nest thermostats are designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating-only, cooling-only, zone-controlled, and heat pump systems, you'll need a nest power connector or C wire
  • Works with 24 VAC systems: nest power connector is only compatible with 24 VAC systems, so it won't work with millivolt or high voltage systems
  • Installation is simple: attaches to your furnace, air handler, or zone controller, and comes with simple instructions
  • Costs less than a new C wire: nest power connector is an affordable C-wire substitute that's designed to be compatible with nest thermostats - and costs much less than hiring an electrician to install a new C wire through your walls
  • Thoughtfully designed: nest power connector resists dust and water, and is made from 46% recycled plastic, wire connectors and sticky pad are designed for easy, mess-free installation

Q:I have 2 older systems; a single zone gas fired hydronic heat system and a single zone cooling system. Neither has a C wire. Will this work and how does it tie in?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi there Jimb! Yes, it can. It's important to check first, the full compatibility of your heating and cooling systems. We recommend checking the wire labels, or the labels on the thermostat where your wires are connected. You may use the Compatibility Checker tool here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246656 Nest Thermostats can usually work without the need for a common (C) wire. However, there are cases when the wires of your systems can't deliver enough power to support the Nest thermostat's features. In such cases, installing a common(C) wire between your HVAC systems and Nest thermostats can help deliver enough power and resolve the problem. The Nest Power Connector can be a simpler and less expensive solution in such cases, especially if you can install it by yourself. If you don’t feel comfortable installing the Power Connector yourself, you can contact a pro to install it for you. If you need further guidance, please consider contacting our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Q:I have a 3 zone system. There are no terminals labeled C. However, the schematic shows a terminal labeled M1 connecting to a terminal labeled C on the thermostat side. Is the C wire from the Nest Power connector to be connected to the M1 terminal?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi John, thanks for your inquiry. If your home has one thermostat, the power connector should be installed at the furnace or air handler. If you have a zoned system with more than one thermostat, the power connector should be installed at the zone controller. If your system doesn’t have a C terminal, you’ll need an external 24 VA/20 VA transformer and additional wire nut/lever lock connectors and professional installation may be required. Q:I set up my nest thermostat and it works great but is constantly shutting off and coming back on. Does this mean I should get the connector for an extra power boost to keep my heat constantly running until temp reaches desired temperature?

A:  You may just need one power connector and we recommend installing it at the zone controller. If you can’t locate your zone controller, we recommend contacting a Nest Pro technician to help you with the installation. Sure beats running a new wire in my system
My heat system is hydronic with 24-volt power for zone valves and pump relays. The thermostats have two wires, red and white, no C (common) wire. A Nest Thermostat showed an error with no C wire. I got a Nest Power Connector to correct this. The gray R and W wires connect to the primary thermostat. The white wires connect: R wire to the 24-volt load, W wire to the zone valve switch, C wire (and "return" wire from the valve switch) to the transformer "C". When powered up everything worked great, like the Nest Thermostat was connected to a C wire.

Google nest thermostats are horrible if you have a two wire system. The support is terrible and they now want you to hire a professional after spending $400 on thermostats and $50 on c connectors which no one can tell you why they don’t work. Buy the ecobee at least they include the power connector

Hi there, Fred. Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that you encountered this issue, and we apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.

Your Nest Thermostat receives power from your HVAC system's wiring and requires a stable and continuous 24 Volt supply. In some cases, the wires may not be able to deliver sufficient power to support all of the Nest thermostat's features, resulting in battery drain and disconnection from your Wi-Fi network. To resolve such issues, it is necessary to install a common (C) wire between your HVAC system and the Nest thermostat. This will help address the problem. The Nest Power Connector offers a simpler and cost-effective solution in such situations, especially if you are able to install it yourself. If you prefer professional installation, you can contact a qualified technician to assist you.
