Is a temperature sensor required when you buy an Nest learning thermostat?
Asked by: Yldkat
No, it's not required. It is an option to remotely sense and control the temperatures.

I see from some of the other questions that each remote sensor will "tell" the temperature of the room in which it is placed. My question is how it communicates this. Is there a display on the remote sensor itself? Can you open the Nest app and see the temperatures of the remote sensors? Is it displayed on the central Nest thermostat itself? All of these? Something else?
Asked by: Jeff
The temperature is not displayed on the sensors. You have to get the temperature readings from your central nest control or through the app on your mobile device, or when you log into your Nest account on your computer.

Does the Temperature Sensor give you up to the minute temperature readings of the room you put it in? I have a duplex

with one thermostat for the whole house. I live in the lower level. I would like to know what the temperature is in the upstairs of my duplex so I can adjust the heat/AC as needed so both the upstairs and downstairs are comfortable. Will the temperature sensor accomplish this?
Asked by: Duplex
Maybe yes, and maybe no. The sensor simply provides a second temperature reading that the thermostat uses to call for heat or cooling. It cannot use both readings at the same time. You tell the thermostat which reading (sensor or thermostat itself) to use by using the scheduling feature, or by manually switching between the two either on the thermostat itself or through use of the app. You cannot tell the thermostat to use something like the "average" of the two readings. It uses either one or the other. Ideally, what you need to keep both levels comfortable at the same time, is a split HVAC system, but that gets expensive.

Nest Temperature Sensor for Google Nest Thermostats is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 802.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from GENIUS!!!! I purchased this in hopes it would work in my master bedroom. I was somewhat skeptical but i've tried everyhting else and nothing works. In came the NEST SENSOR! WOW!!! It is GENIUS! It reads the temp in my room to the "T"! I wish this would've been around 16 years ago since I built my home. If you are having issues with any part of your home needing to get that temp just right I totally recommend

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Balancing Act Solved Thermostats are seldom located in places where temperatures can be balanced in areas not located near the thermostat. My wife complained that her sewing room and the living room were too cold even though the temperature was set at 75. Sure enough, the sensors revealed that these rooms were much colder than the temp set. I am now regulating the temperature by the temp in these rooms via the sensors

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple way to add a thermostat Our 1880 farmhouse has zone heating with 3 zones but our bedroom did not have a thermostat. Being at the rear of our home it would get about 7 degrees colder in the bedroom than the room with the controlling thermostat. We looked into adding an additional thermostat and another zone, but the nest was so much easier and saved us tons of money! My only complaint is it doesn't come in different color

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally I've got control! I have a very unique situation, and that my house is divided with a thermostat on one side and the main portion of the house on the other side. it made it very difficult being able to know what cooling was required in the different parts of the house. With the sensors now I can prioritize which rooms to cool and know that I won't have areas of the house that are either too hot or too cold. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upstairs was a Furnace, now it's comfortable In my house, all of the heat was concentrated upstairs-- especially in my bedroom. We tried everything. We closed the vents to the bedroom and opened them other places. We closed rooms off. We opened windows. Meanwhile my downstairs wouldn't maintain temp. I eventually got the Temperature sensor, put it upstairs and voila! perfect temp throughout the house. Cannot recommend this product enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as described I purchased three sensors, they look good, small, very easy step by step set up (pretty much cannot be easier), they work great, respond well and fast, however, the only thing I do not like is the scheduling block. What I mean by this is that Nest has it where you choose a block of time, let's say from 9pm to 7am for the night to schedule when the thermostat responds to that particular sensor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Put it where you need it! Great way to improve the temperature of a room, when the original thermostat location is incorrect (like on an external wall). Often thermostat locations are picked by HVAC technicians that only cared how easy it was to get the wires to it. Now with the Nest sensor, you can remedy that by placing the sensor where it will detect the temperature more accurately for the room/rooms that it serves!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Options The Nest Temperature Sensor has allowed us to turn a finished basement into a comfortable living area. Prior to installing the sensor, our basement temp was spotty. Warm sometimes but also cool at times. Now the sensor keeps it very comfortable. Also, we are able to run our gas fireplace on the main floor (where Nest thermostat is located) as much as we want without affecting the basement temp.
