Questions & Answers

no clamps available

can i tie some rope around the project in lieu of clamps?
Asked by: JVT
Dear JVT, This should work without a problem if the rope won't mar the piece with which you're working. I have done this with rope or string on many occasions with good results. Of course you must be careful not to get the rope into the glue anywhere on your project. You might even consider making a "Spanish Windlass" which is nothing more than inserting a stick or rod through the rope or string and twisting then holding the end of the stick with string or a clip. Again, be careful not to mar your project. This trick pulls the rope or string tighter than you can by simply pulling but you have to be careful about balancing the force applied by the rope or it can seriously mess things up. I hope this helps with your project. Sincerely, hamrdul

can this product be thinned?

i want a very watery glue to drip into a tight space.
Asked by: anonymous
Hello Annon, I really don't know about product thinning, however, having used the glue for planter boxes I can say the product did run thru small cracks and very small wood joints. The wood was warmed from working in the sun (assembly) and glued late afternoon and left to dry over night. Next day, the glue that ran out onto paint-able surface was sanded , so no problem. I would offer that slightly warming the glue or your work will give desired effect. I will also state once glue has SET, it waterproof and sturdy. Good luck with your project. DoneDeal I apologize for the wait, your message was stuck in 'junk"

Does this glue work well for attaching 1/4” thick wood cabinet end panels? Or different glue recommended? Thanks!

Asked by: stuman74
This is a very strong glue. I have not used it for the specific purpose you mentioned but I don't see any reason why it won't work. I used it to attach 1/2 inch thick wood strips - it has held up very well. The only thing to keep in mind it needs to be clamped tightly for 30 min to an hour.

I had cut four inches off a door in my basement I was installing for the proper clearance. I had to cut the piece out near the middle of the door, and I used a dowel kit I purchased at Home Depot also. The glue held the pieces together as strong as before it was cut down to size. Great product!

The areas glue had touched would not stain, was waterproof. I was a bit disappointed. Probably a good glue for other application. I was making a picture frame with 45 degree cuts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A decent wood repair glue I do a lot of wood working so wood glue is in high use in my shop. This is the first time I ever used Gorilla wood glue. I've used other Gorilla glues and they've done well with the right project. The first thing I noticed about the Gorilla wood glue is the contrast - it's not as yellow, it's more of a cream color when wet. Once it has dried it is a slight tan or sand in color. It blends in well with lighter colored wood. The strength of the Gorilla wood glue is not as strong as the other brands I use. I did a simple test using a pine 1-by glued to a piece of new growth cypress. If you view the photos you will see the Gorilla glue failed mostly at the glue joint. The other brand, the wood itself broke. I believe the Gorilla glue was meant more for simple home repairs where the glue easily blends with lighter wood. The Gorilla glue is easy to work with - not too thin. It sets up in about the normal time as other brands. It sands well once dried and like other wood glues, needs to be sanded from surfaces that are going to be stained and/or coated with clear coats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong Glue I do woodworking as a hobby, and often make panel glue-ups with plain edge joins. The glue has to be strong in this application, since there aren't any mechanical fasteners. This Gorilla wood glue is very strong and pretty impressive with its specifications. Open time is fairly standard for the Type II water resistant class, and clamp time is exceptionally short at 20-30 minutes. It's fairly competitive pricewise as well. I checked it against other brands, and for an apples-to-apples comparison of 8-ounce indoor/outdoor wood glues, it was pretty much the same price. I tested it out on some plain pine scraps by edge joining them and clamping for 2 hours (mainly because I forgot they were out in the garage drying). After letting the joint cure for 24 hours, I inspected it in detail. The squeeze-out had dried in a translucent amber color, and was pretty easy to scrape off with a putty knife. I started testing the strength by trying to pull the scraps apart by hand. When that failed to break the joint, I moved on to pushing them against a corner of my workbench, which didn't work either. Finally, I clamped the glue-up on the edge of the workbench, and whacked the overhanging portion with a handheld sledge. The wood fractured along the edge of the workbench, leaving the glue joint intact. I'm pretty impressed - I may just have to make the switch to Gorilla wood glue permanent!

I rely heavily on wood glue - I own few power tools - a circular saw and power drill / screwdriver and also a few clamps. So when I “build” things in the garage, I rely a lot on 2x4’s, glue and screws (have a lot of screws leftover from previous projects). This wood glue with its fast set up time, allows me to temporarily clamp pieces together, secure them with screws, remove the clamps and keep moving - knowing that these glue joints will set up quickly and effectively keep everything tight and secured. It may not be the correct way to do things, but having only a few clamps, it works for me. Since I do wood projects only occasionally - I like the removable tip which can be cleaned after use, preventing any residual glue from drying inside the tip (see photo).
