The is a flexible spring design but has reasonable stiffness to operate without bending down from gravity if supported a bit from near the bottom of the spring and handled vertically. It won't hold straight if it is angled and will fall down.
The claw size isn't listed, but the grabber depth is 0.5 inches and the width is 3 inches. For reference, objects it can retrieve include a toothbrush, necklace and a pencil.
The Grabber bottom is made of spring steel and also has 4 clays to grab debris - not exactly sure what you describe scum as - but if it is the debris/hair etc then the Grabber should help.
