Can I use this a a power back up? I was considering 2 12v deep cycle batteries, a charge controller and a mobile pvc stand that I can take in and out of my home. Feasible?
Asked by: Gringo
It might be feasible if you only use a minimal amount of battery power. As an example, I'm using this 180-w panel and one more 160-w from the same company for my 23' travel trailer. The two batteries power a gas heater with electric fan (comes on about 2 or 3 times per night), gas refrigerator, water pump, stereo, and lights, all 12v. Those devices use about one quarter total battery capacity in a single day. It usually takes 1/2 to 3/4 of a day (daylight) at 70 - 80 outside temperature to fully charge both batteries. Based on my experience with a total of 340-watts, using just one 180-w panel to charge two 12v batteries will require ideal conditions. If you're thinking of using the same devices I'm using and want to fully charge every day, I would recommend two panels.

Can I charge a 12 volt deep cycle battery with this?
Asked by: Broseph
Not directly, you'll need a charge controller to step down the 24v output of these panels to 12v to charge your batteries.

Would like to get 4 of these and run them for a 12v system on a RV, use lithium and MPPT. Any recommendations on set up?
Asked by: Bill
We have 4 of these wired in 2S2P (2 in series/2 in parallel) and works great on our RV. This config puts out 48V to our Outback charge controller, but any MPPT will work as long as it can handle the amps. Its currently setup with AGM, but I have 15Kw of Cmax lithium batteries that will be installed this fall and I'll just revise the Outback charge settings to accommodate lithium.

Am interested in buying this 180-Watt panel I would like to start off with 2 panels and every year after that buy 2 more panels tell I end up with 8 panels, I would like to buy only one charge controller that would work with 2 panels then 4 then 6 then 8 also would work for 12 v and 24 if I choose too, can you help me with this
Asked by: Manwithallthequestion
Yes , I bought 1 panel 180 watt and it works quite well. You can go onto the owners manual and find out installation and answers to most questions. The controller would need to be bought alone. The customer service staff at Grape solar are willing to help with questions also. A very good product.

I first purchased a Cynergy 180 Watt panel for my trailer and liked the performance, so I decided to purchase another Cynergy Panel. However, they no longer sell a 180 Watt Mono panel. So I found the Grape 180 Watt with nearly the same specs as the Cynergy purchased it from HD. Wow, there is no comparison between the two panels. Performance of the Grape is slightly better but the best part is the frame construction. I drilled both panels for mounting and there was less flex in the Grape frame and corner assembly of the Grape is reinforced with a stainless insert. How do I know this....I broke a #12 stainless self drill in one corner. Twice!! Only small issue is that Grape does not color code their hookup wires and when your building cables and the panel is flat on the roof it's impossible to see the markings on the terminal box. If you don't trust the sex of the connector to tell which is positive you should mark the cable before mounting.

It outperforms all my expectations of it. My son and I are heavy gamers, so we have put this little guy through its' paces. It has survived hail storms, thunderstorms, and being woefully ignored by one lazy owner who often doesn't feel like climbing up an RV ladder to clean it in the first darned place. It hadn't been cleaned in six months, and when I went up there today that poor solar panel was caked in dirt. I'm not talking about a little bit of dirt a bit of elbow grease and a paper towel can take off, but the kind that turns to mud with a good ol' fashioned squeegee. That solar panel was virtually unrecognizable. You could hardly see the panel underneath. Yeah, it was that bad. Yes, I learned my lesson - clean it every once in a dang while. Before I cleaned it, this panel was still getting in 80 watts and trodding along despite months of dirt being caked onto it. After I got my butt up on the roof and cleaned the darned thing, the wattage jumped to 120 - enough to play more video games. Now I know I bought this thing for low light, but in my mind I was thinking fog and that sort of thing. I didn't think that it could still work when it was layered in dirt. Think layering, like the kind you find dinosaurs in. Thankfully, this panel was made to withstand not only hailstorms but lazy humans too. This company was truly serious when they told me over the phone that these were tested for low light situations. I kind of wondered if they tried doing this with dirt too, because it sure as heck still keeps on working and bringing in enough watts to satisfy our gaming addictions. About the only thing to be said to dislike about the panel is that it doesn't come with extra long mc4 cords. But then they expect you, the non lazy human, to get what you need elsewhere. I guess they figure that if you are brave enough to drill a hole in your darned roof and place a panel that you're not sure is going to work in the first place, that you are going to quickly figure out your own needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great solar panel for off grid cabin at a very reasonable price. I purchased this solar panel to replace a Harbor Freight set up that I had been using for a few years. This panel is by far much better than the 45W (3) panel set up. The biggest and most time consuming job in installation was having to make the frame for the panel to attach to on the roof. Once that was done, the panel was easy to connect to my existing charge controller. The leads are rather short on this new panel, so expect to buy extensions if you need to. I am very happy with the initial performance as well as the sleek look on the roof. This is an off grid application, and 165 watts vs 45 watts is a great improvement for my needs which are simply lighting and small electronics. I am anxious to experience the long term results with this new panel. NOTE: A major deciding factor in purchasing this panel for me was that it is made in the USA.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Offgrid Living Over the last two years, I have built my solar power system which includes 10 of these panels. They are awesome. They provide enough charge to my 8 battery bank to run a freezer, washer and dryer, quite a few CFL's, small power tools and several other things and I still find my CC on float because the batteries are fully charged. I am going to plug in my fridge and turn off my gas one and I am sure there will be enough power for the fridge also. I have posted pics of my CC and the battery bank so you could see what the panels can do/handle. I plan on buying 10 more of these and another CC by the end of the year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for our camper! The panel comes with nothing but the panel and leads off from it so you'll need a solar power controller, 10 awg copper wire or whatever you choose, and all of the connectors. We knew this so had it all, then went camping! It worked like a charm! We didn't need to run our furnace so couldn't get enough things to run to even take down our battery bank. It kept the batteries fully charged the whole weekend, and half the weekend was overcast. What we WERE running was...an exhaust fan in the ceiling of the camper (about 6 hours/day), a few lights, and constantly charging cellphones, Ipad, weather radio, or whatever else gadgets we needed charged, and a TV/DVD player for 2-3 hours each night.
