Questions & Answers

Can I use this in july?

Asked by: BabyD
Can use in July, but I would apply during morning or evening cool down. However the product will only prevent new weeds from growing. Those weeds that are already in progress will not die. My experience with corn gluten is that when used once in spring and once in fall it works beautifully.

corn gluten for crabgrass

I already had my guy put down granular weed and feed last Monday. It doesn't include killing the crabgrass. Will it hurt if I put the corn gluten down now, and will it hurt since I already had it treaded the past Monday. Thank you
Asked by: Iberia
You can use it anytime of the year to prevent dog pooh on your lawn (seriously). It stinks quite nicely (to dogs, not so much to humans) and dogs will steer clear of your lawns. I plan to buy it every year now.

Will this product be effective on lawns with weeds already sprouted?

We just moved into a new house and weeds cover the lawn (all other houses are weed free) and we want to use a natural remedy due to kids and pets.
Asked by: NewtoGreen
No, its a pre-emergent. Must be applied before they germinate (March 1 summer weeds, September 1 winter weeds)

How much area will 64 0z cover?
Asked by: Shar
Supposed to cover 2000 sf but only over about 1000 sf because the nozzle opening is to big and releases too much product at a time.

I used a chemical pre-emergent in the past and decided to switch to the corn gluten since we have pets and kids playing in the yard. Very happy we did. It does a great job without the chemicals. I live in the Southeast and I apply it on March 1st for the summer weeds and then the 3rd week of August for the winter weeds. Also did some investigating about corn gluten and it should be dry for about three days after applying. No more weeds in the yard, excellent! One other tip, I also use this in my landscaping beds (mulch, etc.) to keep from having to weed each year, excellent time saver. I can confirm though what others have said about the application method and it is hit or miss with some cans whether they simply squirt water or are actually applying the corn gluten (thus the 4 star rating vs 5 stars). I have found about 10% of the cans do have an issue. You can actually see the water turning slightly yellow and you will hear a different sound when it is working. Once I find a good can I will save the yellow top and switch it out with any cans that are having issues then it works fine.

I don't think it really prevented any weeds from growing and had to end up using RoundUp For Lawns 3, "Kills Weeds Not the Lawn", (UPC: 0-32247-50088-3), which worked great. However, this Green-It Corn Gluten Weed Preventer stinks quite nicely and it ended up preventing dog pooh on my lawn, as long-time "visiting" dogs from the neighborhood would steer clear of my lawn after I applied this. Will buy it again as a dog pooh preventer.

In the past I have used another corn gluten products (granular) and it worked beautifully. Each application (1 spring/1 fall) increases the effectiveness and less/no weeds. I am hoping that this liquid product will also. However, the spray mechanism released the product so quickly that it covered only half of the intended area, 1000 sf versus 2000 sf per bottle intended. I called the manufacturer. They readily said they would send two replacement bottles. I have not received as of today 11/8/17. I hope that too much corn gluten in an area is not going to cause a problem but I will not know until the spring. Giving 3-stars based on expectation of no-weed/ few weed results. Recommend "no" based on coverage and to-date non-receipt of replacement product. Will update my review, if given an opportunity, when replacement arrives and spring arrives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works if you understand what a preemergent is. This is not a weed killer, it is a preemergent. If you apply this too late in the Spring AFTER weed seeds have germinated you will get weeds. The weed emerges from the seed, pre means before, before the emergent of weeds. So yes, if you apply this at the end of Feb, beginning of March, then it works, if you apply it in April or May, it will not because the weeds have already germinated. It doesn't help to post a review of a product saying it doesn't work, if it wasn't used properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Product! First of all, You have to use this product properly and you will not be disappointed. I've tried several similar, corn gluten based products so far, but this one is simply the best. Being a non-selective pre-emergent herbicide means that it keeps ALL seeds from germinating. This means that it needs to be applied to lawns that are already esablished, and care needs to be taken to not apply it where seeds have been planted which you want to grow. If you already see weeds growing in your lawn, it is too late for this product, at least as a weed killer. It will still prevent more weeds from germinating, as well as helping to make future applications more effective. Overall, a great product, safe for kids and pets, and a price is a steal - what else do you want?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where have you been all my life? I bought this product and the dry equivalent by another manufacturer. I like having both, but either is good. It's surprising a pre-emergent isn't more popular. Even in store, they had to research it and found HD did carry it on-line. It's safe, non-toxic to pets and the environment, and the nitrogen content also acts as a fertilizer. What's not to like?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good Product. I used corn gluten meal in the dry form before and love the results but it's not available here and too expensive to buy via the mail. I tried this liquid form and I'm very happy with the results. I don't know how the weed suppression will work yet, but the dry CGM worked very well at keeping the weeds down for about 3 months. This liquid product really got my grass a nice dark green and thicker. I used two bottles to cover about 4000 sq feet. The grass got much greener after 2 weeks. I will put it down again in Sept/Oct. It's well worth the money.
