Thank you for your inquiry! If you are overseeding (2 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft.) the setting is a 4. If you are doing a new lawn (4 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft.) the setting is a 5.

Chuck, order the product from Home Depot. Have it delivered to your local store for you to pick up. Or better yet, make your order over $45 and get free delivery to your house. I always learned that the best time to plant is in the fall when the soil is still warm and the days do not get so hot that the seedlings dry out and die. That would be your decision based on your geographical location. Best wishes.

Can I put this seed down at the beginning of spring? I have an area at the back of m yard that is very shaded and nothing has worked. I know fall is better but I am tired of looking at the dirt. Thanks.

              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Thank you for your inquiry! Fall is the ideal time for planting and sowing new grass seed. We recommend seeding/overseeding in the fall when your lawn has recovered from all the summer stresses, and your daytime temperatures begin to be consistently in the 70's with cool evenings, and you have prepared your lawn for seeding/overseeding; you can choose to seed/overseed in the spring if you are able to keep after your seed/new turf with maintenance (ie: watering, etc.) to get it through the summer stresses and any less than ideal conditions.

What is the minimum and max ground temperature for this seed to germinate? Did it last through the cold winter and I hot summer. Half my lawn is under a large oak tree and I have nothing but dirt currently.

                Answer This Question

GreenView Fairway Formula Grass Seed Dense Shade Mixture germinates best when soil temperatures are between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit and will germinate faster at higher soil temperatures as long as the increased heat doesn't dry out the seeds and soil. Temperatures above 90 F or below 50 F prompt the seeds to abort any growth and return to dormancy. Once established and properly cared for it will last through cold winters and hot summers in the northern 2/3 of the United States into the transition zone. Thank you!

Lots of Coverage in One Bag
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the features of this grass seed. The lack of filler gives me a lot more coverage. I was able to spread seeds to an area approximately 5 yards by 1 yard. It was nice that they had instructions on the back of the bag that are easy to read and follow. I was surprised that the birds and squirrels left it alone, at least every time I looked out the window. It got windy a few hours after I had sowed the seeds, and we have had several rains and storm systems come through since as well, but the seed has not blown away. It looks like I am getting some early growth from some of the seeds. I am so excited that I can easily restore the shady lawn area under a huge tree.

                    Slow growing so far
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have a tree down at the bottom of my driveway where I have had trouble with grass growing and in the winter plows tearing it up . I cleaned and raked the area, mixed in some compost to the soil, seeded it, and raked in some fresh top soil on top. I took a picture to track the progress. I watered regularly but didnt see much growth. It has been over 2 weeks and there is some new growth but not what I expected. I live in the northeast and realize that the weather may be playing a factor in it. I plan on giving it another week before I add more seed and soil to the area.

These seeds did excellently in sprouting under my trees and they came out quickly. In another area where the seeds were more exposed to sun in August they came out not as quickly did not grow as fast which I think it has mostly to do with this hot summer. I would highly recommend this grass seed above any other that I have tried. In the shaded areas I had the best results and I like the blades and deep green color of the grass from the seeds.

Fall is the perfect time to plant grass in the Pacific NW so I grabbed this to try and fix those darker areas where regular grass mix won't last over the winter. It's a really good quality seed mix. It's un-coated so is designed to be covered slightly. I planted on 8/30/19 and the seed started to germinate in 8 days. So far is working as advertised. I also spot seeded where moles have been digging and is coming in nicely there as well. It's 38.5% fairmont chewing fescue which I haven't seen so this hopefully will be the ticket to keeping the grass in these shady places. 38.5% fairmont chewing Fescue 20.01% Exacta II GLSR perenial Ryegrass 20% Man O'war perennial reyegrass 10% Chorus creeping red fescue 10 Sword hard fescue

Just put this seed down throughout my driveway at my cottage in northern Michigan. I put this seed down to help prevent water run-off and soil erosion. My driveway is on a pretty good incline and if I have a strong downpour, it can wash out my bed of crushed limestone. I'm hoping the grass will grow and propagate and help prevent this problem. Obviously to early to give a complete review, so I'll do a follow-up after the seed completely germinates, and I have had a good rainfall.

Grass seed suitable for shade mixtures. I placed this grass seed in early fall in garden zone 6. FOr over seeding use 3 lb / 2000 sq ft. I also had patch issues and covered with a bit of straw. Watered in daily. Grass sprouts in about 7 days with good coverage in 2 weeks. Shade mixture includes Fairmont Chewings Fescue, Rodin Tall Fescue, Exacta II Perennial Ryegrass, Gladiator Hard Fescue, Pathfinder Red Fescue

I'm very impressed with this seed. I planted it less than a week ago in a very shady area of the yard, and it's already showing some good growth. I took a picture of it, but due to my poor photography skills, it wasn't really worth sharing. I watered it once or twice, it's rained a couple of times, and we've had a good amount of sun in the past week, but I really haven't put much effort into making it grow and it's still done very well, especially considering that this is just seed, no coating or fertilizer or anything like that.

Greenview Dense Shade is just what you want for over seeding your lawn. The coverage will probably be close to 5 thousand square feet depending on the volume of your spreading. The important point of this brand is that it is NOT coated which is important for over seeding your lawn. Here in the northeast, "winter over seed" the lawn in December before the snow and rain and freezing rain storms. By the spring , the seed is driven down to the earth and between the other blades of grass ready to germinate. The seed is 99.9% weed free and should produce a heathy lawn in the next summer.

It’s too soon to tell how good this is, as I have only recently planted it. I am giving it 4 stars for now, and I will come back and edit my review if it is something other than 4 stars. It is grass seed, I expect it to grow as stated on the packaging. It appears to be a high quality product, but until it germinates and grows I cannot say for sure.
