The bed is made out of chemical free and naturally rot resistant North American cedar. It assembles without tools using the time tested and proven Greenes Fence Company dovetail design: simply slide the boards into the corner posts to form the frame, attach the caps, and then add soil, plants, and sunshine to start growing the garden of your dreams. Greenes Premium Cedar Raised Garden Beds use a 5.5 in. H board. Premium beds can stack and expand with other with other Greenes Premium beds, however they are not compatible with Greenes cedar raised gardens that use a 3.5 in. H board.
  • GREENES PREMIUM RAISED GARDEN BED: Greenes Fence Premium line of cedar raised garden beds allows you to create an open-bottom frame to support your garden. Raised garden beds give your plants the room they need to grow in the location of your choice. Our cedar frame is left untreated, which means it is organic and safe to grow vegetables, herbs, and fruits in.
  • PREMIUM LINE: With sanded boards that are thicker than our Value and Original lines, our Premium raised garden beds are an exceptional choice for all your growing needs.
  • EASY TO SET UP: Greenes Fence raised garden beds use dovetail interlocking joints, which makes assembly a breeze. Each board slides into the corner posts without tools to form a secure open-bottom garden frame. Every corner post is routed on all four sides for easy assembly and expansion. The decorative tops can be added to each post using a screwdriver.
  • STACK AND EXPAND: Our Premium line of garden beds can be connected or stacked with other Premium beds and add-on parts to create the grand garden of your dreams.
  • LONGEVITY: Cedar is resistant to rot and insects, making it the perfect choice for your garden. Left organic, the wood will weather nicely to a silver-gray color over time. To preserve the wood apply a seal or stain of your choice.
  • SPECIFICATIONS: Each board is 3/4 inch thick and 5.5 inches in height. The routed corner posts are 2.5 inches square and come with 3.5-inch-square decorative tops.

Yes, the bottom is wide open

Can boards be cut down if 96” length is too long?

They have dovetails on the ends, so you'd need a router or something to recreate the joint.

does this item have a bottom or does it sit directly on the existing dirt?

It sits directly on the existing dirt. We have used similar ones in the past and put down a piece of wire fencing to keep the moles out and a piece of weed block material.

Could the wood be stained or painted?

Yes, the description says they're untreated and will take stain. Be sure to choose wisely for food crops.

Does this stack neatly? I would like my bed at least 22" high, maybe even 33" high.

Yes I think it would stack nicely but you would need to fasten it with something. There’s about an inch of room left on post after you slide the sides in. So that would help tie it together.

They set on the dirt.

Lots!!

Does it sit on the ground, or are the posts dug into the ground?

The posts and board just sit on the ground. You could hammer a rebar into one of the corner channels to hold it in place.

Is the 8ft bed just two 4ft beds?

No it is actually a connected bed, just divided in half. There is only one wall in the middle between the two soil sections.

The boards are 5.5" wide, so three boards would be about 16.5"

Nice raised garden beds
Giving this only four stars because the six top caps were not in box. I emailed company and if they send them to me I will change to five stars. I am 66 female and these were easy to put together and nice and tall. Can’t wait for next summer to fill them with fresh veggies. I hope they last a few years

Overall I liked the product. It saved me a lot of time. I bought both the finished wood and unfinished wood beds and found that the unfininshed wood went together easier, although the finished wood seemed to be a better quality. One of the planks on my unfinsihed planter box is warped. I'm hoping it straightens out. It was a little difficult putting this one together because they didn't finish the ends where they slide into each other. One end cracked a little, but not significantly. I ended up spraying the ends with silicone before inserting them and that helped. I put the whole thing together by myself in less than half an hour. They look pretty good, but I'm thinking I really didn't need them this tall for growing lettuce and other greens. The shorter ones would work just as well. I do wish they came with a plastic cover to grow greens in the winter. I will be making my own.

I would recommend this product, but be mindful of the “rough cuts”. The machined wood needs to be cleaned out BEFORE assembly. And if you are not careful, the end posts will split. It is a good product, just not exceptional.

Great buy. I bought 2 of these kits, and they worked better than I thought they would, I followed the recommendations of the reviews, cleaned the channels first with a putty knife. I stained them with Thompson's stain and waterproofing. Assembly only took about 30 minutes for both. Planted each with veggies, and so far so good. I do recommend tilling the soil, or at least turn it over first, then add soil to desired levels. I have been square foot gardening for over 30 years, and I would recommend Greene's Premium Cedar Raised Beds, for any level of gardener, from a beginner to the most experienced, they work great in small spaces. See the attached photos of my beds.

Overall this was a cost effective way to get a raised bet (when it was on sale). Packaging was good, and all the parts were included. It could be a little easier to assemble. The grooves aren't the smooth so in some instances you needed to apply a little more force to get the pieces to connect. In my opinion once this is assembled that is it, there is no breaking it apart without damaging it. It's all set in the backyard and now waiting for the plants to grow.

I bought this in spite of the negative reviews. I am glad I did. Sure the rough hewn boards and corners have rough edges, that is not unexpected. This is not fine furniture, it is a garden box. To over come the issue that others posted about when sliding boards into the corners, I used a broad flat head screwdriver to deburr each channel (see Picts). It took maybe 60 seconds per corner piece and made the assembly a piece of cake. The wood smells great, like cedar should and should hold up to the elements.

I would have said 5 stars on the first purchase, but this time around I'll say 3. For $130 they didn't do anything to clear the splinters and other machined tooled debris from all of the corner pieces (all 6). What this means is that I split two corners before I spent another 20mins cleaning each of the other four grooves of each piece. (See picture of piece on left. Piece on right had to be nailed back together after splitting.) That's shoddy woodworking. If you want us to build it then give us a finished product to work with or charge us $50 bucks and leave the labor to us to finish.
