I need to attach WEDI backerboard in my tub surround, but the 1-5/8" WEDI screws are too short in my particular situation (I have ~.75" furring strip attached to the front of the stud. Are these a suitable substitute for use in backer board? I've already checked that they fit the WEDI washers.
Asked by: FirstTimeDIY
Hi FirstTimeDIY - Yes, as long as the screw head fits flush with the washer. This is a good choice as these screws are designed to be used wherever water is present. Hope this helps......LeeW

Will these screws split the wood? Do I need to drill a pilot hole first? Thanks.

When I rebuilt the steps on my old home place, using pressure treated lumber, the screws did not split the wood and I used them on the entire project without pre-drilling. Thanks, I hope this helps. Terry B

#8 x 2-1/2 in. Philips Bugle-Head Coarse Thread Sharp Point Polymer Coated Exterior Screws (1 lb.-Pack) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 277.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from These seem to be working good for my deck refurbish... These seem to be working good for my deck refurbish project. I am predrilling 2 inch deep holes, smaller than the diameter of the screws (1/8in dia), so the threads bite all the way in. Less likely to split the wood and the screws go in easier. I believe you might have issues with the heads stripping unless you are careful and use a lot of downward pressure. Yes, it is more work but I believe it is worth the time. My concern is how long these will last, (how long the coating will last). The warranty is 10 years. I am hoping 2 to 3 times that. The sliding nails that the builder used, only lasted 13 years. Treated lumber no longer uses Arsenic, and the new formulas are more ammonia based, which are corrosive and eat up fasteners.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The quality is not the same as it used to... The quality is not the same as it used to be. Driver bit was not found in the box. I have been theirloyal customer but now serious thoughts will be given before buying their product as their is a tough competition in the market. Quality is the hallmark of Grip-Rite and they will be cut above the rest bymaintaining it. Customers will pay and there is no shortage of them. Degrading quality is not the best option to remain at the top which I wish them to be while they are in Business.

I didn't noticed until I was through with my project, but the package clearly states " Do not use withing 5 miles for coast". This is due to potential water contamination from the coating/corrosion of the screws. The Home Depot that the screws were purchased from is approximately 2 miles for the coast.

Non stripped while going through synthetic decking and 4 x 6 below the decking. I purchased them on clearance for a great value. Your area store may have the 25 LB boxes in clearance right now, if not they have them in 1lb and 5lb boxes.

I use two different types of these screws. I use these for simple projects - inexpensive and with the common philips head. For really serious projects, I splurge on stainless steel screws that will likely outlast me.

Screws themselves are fine but the Philips head isn't really sufficient for a bit to take hold; not enough depth to get a good grip. Personally, I prefer using the star-head screws but Home Depot just didn't have the size I needed at the time.

They are strong and pull down on boards such as decking, fencing and siding quite rapidly. The Phillips heads are adequate for most uses. The coating seems to last and keeps them from rusting and staining.
