About This Product

This benchtop lathe doesn't skimp on power; it offers impressive torque for small parts production. First and foremost, it features a special Big Boy tailstock, designed with the same convenient quick-locking controls and extra-long footprint previously only found on our much larger lathes. It also features variable-speed spindle controls with digital RPM display for dialing in the perfect cutting speed, a 2-speed gearbox for getting the extra torque needed when turning at lower speeds, and the ability to cut a wide range of inch and metric threads. Includes all the essential standard equipment you'll need to get up and running, including a 3-jaw chuck with internal and external jaws, 5 in. faceplate, steady rest, 4-way turret tool post, and MT#2 and MT#3 dead centers.

          Needs a lot of work
This review is not so much to entirely place any blame on Grizzly but rather to the factory that makes this 7 x 14 lathe. First a little history. I bought the lathe, tail stock chuck and a tool bit set in 2017 and had it shipped up to my friend to exclusively use it for turning small wooden spools for his small working business to help him as he was struggling financially, he never turned a single metal item on it. In December of 2022 he called and said he closed his business and said if I wanted it back to come get it. I drove 880 miles round trip to get it. It still looked brand new, not a blemish or anything on it. Got home and set up and started to use it. I adjusted all gibs and made a cut, this lathe needed more work. Even with the gibs adjusted properly there was still movement in the carriage and compound rest. Not only would the carriage move while doing facing cuts, the compound rest would move down while doing turning. In addition the compound rest adjustable setting ring would bind up on in-feed. I had to machine locks for the carriage and compound and resolve the binding on the setting ring. Everything seems good, nope, did a facing cut with all the locks tightened and now I discovered the headstock is not aligned causing tapered facing and turning cuts. Well add this to the plastic gears and bushings I would say consider all the work you will need to do prior to purchasing. BTW, not a new user, been using lathes since 1973, currently have (2) smaller USA made lathes (Taigs) and I used 12” lathes while I was employed. In conclusion, I think Grizzly should have a machinist evaluate these lathes, give recommendations to the factory that protrudes them and make improvements so they are ready to use when you receive them.

              7 x 14 Lathe Review.
This is definitely a small, light duty lathe. It will require some tweaking and adjusting to make it less susceptible to chatter. It will required complete disassembly to clean it. This was not done very well at the factory. The ways on the cross slide are not that good and could use some fitting and adjusting. Overall a good starter lathe.

              Great little lathe
I restore vices and use this lathe for handles, knobs, bushings, etc., and does a nice job. It arrived packaged good, oiled, ands works with no issues.

                Poor quality and poor engineering.
Poor quality and design. Ways look like they were finished with a chisel. Tailstock must be extended an inch to accommodate standard MT adapter. If it wasn't so difficult, I'd return it. Little Machine products much better.

This unit is good right out of the box, However, there are know upgrades that Greatly increase ease of usage, reliability and quality of work. Head Bearings, Metal Gears and a Quick Change Tool Holder. I would have paid more $$$ if these were offered as an upgrade... Grizzly...

Not bad but a bit difficult to cut steel. It seems that people replace the head stock bearings a lot as an upgrade. I may do that.

Appears to be a good Mini Lathe
Have yet to use it but it ran pretty well for the spindle break-in. Currently torn down and getting Cleaned, Roller Spindle Bearings, Maybe all metal Gears (have a slight issue with the bearings I purchased but nothing that can't be overcome with a little hand fitting), addition of Live Center. Fixed wire that broke off the spindle speed sensor (that part is rater cheesy and may get replaced with a sensor instead, added and hand made polycarbonate removable shield, put together and tested out a mist coolant system . Some things I don't like at all are the plastic parts, such as the side gearing cover, the control panel cover, gearing spacers, and the lack of a carriage lock (besides tightening the way screws. Another project. I will also say that the inside of the spindle id machined pretty badly (looks like it was chewed out by a 20 year old drill rather than machine. The way slides on the cross slide are also not good at all. It works smoother than I'd ever thought it would. Overall, I'm pleased with it and thing is was a good buy for the money. Time will tell??????
