Used this gel stain on the below Ash Butcher Block from HD: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hardwood-Reflections-Unfinished-Thermally-Modified-Ash-4-ft-L-x-25-in-D-x-1-5-in-T-Butcher-Block-Countertop-1525HDFJEGTA-50/311324662 Results for amazing (see pictures). Not that I also purchased HD's Satin Topcoat from the same line of Hardwood Reflections line of stains and finishes. I would highly recommend purchasing the two together. Especially, if purchasing one of HD's butcher blocks. Stain was easy to apply. I ended up using a foam brush to apply and an old white shirt to wipe off excess. I would recommend wiping off pretty immediately after applying. The wood soaked in the stain quickly and only required one generous coating. Don't be afraid to over-apply as long as you are wiping off excess thoroughly and are uniform in your approach. I let the stain dry for a full week before applying the satin topcoat. For my application, that much of a wait period was sufficient. The end result was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. Highly recommend.

We offer a variety of finished and some are safe for food contact and some are not. This product changes the color of wood and then apply a top coat once dry. HFAria

Simple to use. Make sure you fill all holes and cracks then sand well before using. I started with 100 grit; thena20 and finished with 200. Rub on. Wipe off excess. Add another coat if you want it darker.

Great color, great stain, NOT FOOD SAFE.
Easy to apply and looks great. THIS ISNT FOOD SAFE! I bought it with my hardwood reflections walnut counter top which is great. Why they recommend a stain with a wood countertop that isn't food safe is beyond me. You'd think that a label that says in caps BUTCHER BLOCK on the front would be food safe, or at least right on the front say NOT FOOD SAFE. Ended up applying mineral oil that is on the other side. Because I plan on cooking in my kitchen. Highly recommend for wood that wouldn't touch food as its good looking.

Jacob-thank you for the review. If you plan on cutting directly on the walnut we recommend mineral oil or butcher block conditioner. A lot of customers use cutting boards and for this application this gel coat works excellent. HFAria

Great stain. I used 1 coat of dark walnut followed by 2 coats of the satin top. I did that because the color was perfect. Ensure that you leave no brush strokes or drips, you will see them!

I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I need to speak out about this stain, in case it can save someone else some headache. I like the company, maybe I got a bad batch, but this stain was unusable, too thick to get any good coverage, and went on like mud. It was impossible to wipe off, which was a huge shame because I think where it did wipe off, it left a rich and deep beautiful color. I had to thin it with mineral spirits and sand off the rest because it was too uneven and dark that the grain was masked. This is not my first rodeo with butcher block staining, I've used Watco Danish Oil, Varathane, Tung, even good old fashioned mineral oil. My advice is, unless you need a stain, go with a mineral oil for the rich color, and use some wax to cover it. If you need the dark walnut, just use the Danish oil, flood it, let it self level, and cover it with wax or a wipe on poly, depending on your needs. This is way too expensive to be this much of a letdown, especially for the size. I also had the satin finish and it went on fine, just a few manageable brush marks. If this stain had the consistency of the satin finish, it would have been fine, but as it is, I cannot recommend this. It could have been just a one-off bad batch, but as of now I only wish I could still get a refund.

The way this stain covered was truly lovely, however for a product that has “butcher block stain” in the name you would hope it would be safe to use on an actual butcher block. But upon further research I found out it’s not food safe, so I had to resand our butcher block island completely to remove it. Extremely disappointed. If I was using this for any other stain job it would be great and that’s the only reason I didn’t give it one star.
