Originating from tropical Africa, the sapele tree showcases a medium to dark reddish brown interlocked grain that is truly stunning. It is more durable than the other mahoganies it resembles and is almost completely rot and weather resistant. Sapele wood is dramatically stable and thus predictable from the moment it is felled to the time the final product is wrapped. Beautiful but poor quality control

Received this unfinished Sapele butcher block top in a timely manner, however, upon opening the undamaged box the item was in poor condition. It was split apart along one seam, gouged and had rough grain in a couple of areas. Pretty disappointing as I had my carpenter on-site ready to immediately install. Luckily my carpenter was able to glue and screw together with braces. He also had to trim off bad spots to make it work. It looks beautiful now that its installed but if I would have had the time, I'd have returned it. I now need another butcher block top for another project but I'm afraid to order from this maker.

Solid beautiful butcher block. The rich natural red is stunning but doesn't have that tacky tone fake "cherry" colored furniture has. I coated it with clear satin gel stain. I attached it to hydraulic legs resulting in an awesome desk. It doesn't scratch easily and cleans up easily. Very happy.

Nice wood, poor construction.

The wood looks great but the block suffered joint delamination in several areas delaying my kitchen install. The instructions supplied for immediate sealing of the wood were followed. I also purchased the 98" and island blocks which had no issues.

Actually, Home Depot must have not been able to get the 4' and 6' Sapele counter tops and upgraded me to European Walnut for the same price. Please beware that you need whatever you are going to use for a sealer ready when you remove the plastic seal because you only have 2 to 4 hours to seal it. This is a great solid product. You won't be disappointed. Great product I use for a reloading bench and a work bench.

Beautiful colors

I absolutely love this butcher block counter top on my island, so I do give it a 5 star rating based on the looks and quality of the butcher block. The frustrating part was that it took three orders before I finally received it. The first (and then second) order came in damaged. The third order was shipped to store with no problems. I oiled the counter top with mineral oil as soon as it was installed, and this really brought out the richness and beauty of the red colors.

Using as a desk in home office

I have no experience with finishing wood, but did some research online and decided to sand this smooth up to a 220grit and then wetsand with Tung oil finish for about 7 coats. Wow this thing is really beautiful! I'm using it for a desktop in my home office and it grabs the attention of the whole room. I can't wait to finish up my project and maybe use these blocks in my kitchen since I have the confidence in using it now.
