Customer Reviews

HDX 14 in. Rip Ceramic Tile Cutter is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 268.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really great tile cutter Frankly, I was nervous when I ordered this product. The millions of videos I watched told me I had to get a wet saw to cut my tiles. Being car-free, renting a wet-saw was out of the question. The $20 price tag and the other reviews of this product made me think, "what the heck." I bought hand-made tiles from Mexico, so my tiles were about a 1/4 inch thick. I did score multiple times as the other reviewers recommended. Every cut was beautiful. I only lost one tile to multiple fractures, and I'm willing to accept user error for that one. I even cut a couple of tiles a few times (my tiles were only 4" X 4") and it worked every time. My back splash is really beautiful. I fretted for weeks about how to cut these tiles and this really did the job incredibly. I would recommend this purchase again and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glass cutting made easy I bought this to cut glass tiles even after the HD Associate told me I would need a wet saw with a diamond blade(upwards of $200). I read online that this would work. I am happy I bought it! it was so easy to cut the glass without any chipping or breaking. This was for a backsplash in my kitchen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alternate Cutting Technique for thick tiles I read several reviews of this product, and it looked like there was a wide range of opinions. Usually that means that someone either got a defective product or they were using it incorrectly. I bought it to cut 3/8" thick porcelain tile, and it would score the tile, but the breaker mechanism wasn't strong enough to split the tile, so I used an alternate method to break the tile. I scored the face of the tile with this tool. Next, I removed it from the tool, and I marked the center of the back of the tile using a t-square to match the score on the front. For example, if the cut was 2" from the edge, I marked 2" from the same edge on the back. Then I took a ball pein hammer and lightly tapped that mark on the back with the ball side of the hammer. Every tile broke perfectly every time. One thing to keep in mind when you're a do-it-yourselfer, and you've decided to tackle a project that is generally handled by a craftsman (ie. skilled). They've spent time learning, practicing, and perfecting their trade. You can't expect to tackle it perfectly on your first try. Don't give up, don't believe the tool is faulty. Use the tool for what it is and improvise. This tool scores perfectly straight lines on tile. If the tile is thinner than what I have, it also snaps the tile perfeclty straight (I tested on a smaller tile when it wouldn't snap my thicker tile). One HUGE advantage this has over a tile saw is that you don't lose any material in the cut. A tile saw loses the thickness of the saw blad in each cut. If you notice in the image I attached to this review, all of the cuts are perfectly straight. I even made an angled cut around the toilet drain flange. The pink strips of paper on the tiles were where I numbered them after the dry-fit to make sure I was putting them back in the correct place.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Will shatter some porcelain tiles DIY bathroom tiling remodel. 12x24 porcelain wall tiles. I needed to make about 20 cross cuts to fit the pattern so this tool sounded ideal. Although the instructions recommend scoring once, the HD expert recommended 4 passes for porcelain. First test cut was great - nice smooth edge and straight cut. Second cut I had an offline break near the edge. Next tile cut broke the tile into 4 pieces. I bought some new cutting wheels hoping that I had just blunted the blade. Next cut was good, next one broke the tile. So far a 50% failure rate. It just got worse after that. This thing is NOT GOOD FOT ALL TILES, so beware what your tile material is. It's probably OK for some tiles (the good reviews) but not for others (the bad reviews). I can't advise on which tiles it will work for and which ones it will ruin, but it sure ruined mine. I didn't have a problem with the tool falling apart like some other reviewers. It may not be an expensive tool, but I've already doubled the price I paid for it on broken tiles. Back to my trusted (but messy) wet saw for the rest of the job...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job, although small cuts are tricky This was my first time laying tile, and the tile cutter did a good job of cutting the tile to size. I debated renting a tile saw, but chose to purchase this tile cutter so I could do the job on my schedule instead of a rental schedule. Most of my cuts went perfectly; the only problem I had was when I had to cut a very narrow portion of the tile off; the lack of consistent support along the rail would allow the tile to break in a random way. Overall, I lost only a handful of tiles in a medium-size job; I consider that an acceptable loss rate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works good if you follow these tips.... The trick with these cutters is to score from edge to edge 3+ times. Put the breaker near the edge of the tile and slowly but firmly push down to snap the tile. Of course, the nature of tile is you will get some miss breaks but that is to be expected. Well worth the money....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inexpensive Tile Cutter With Surprising Quality I was pleasantly surprised that this inexpensive tile cutter was able to get the job done successfully. I used Walton Noce 12 in. x 12 in. Ceramic Floor Tiles, only cutting the pieces that were required (corners, top pieces, etc.). The cuts were clean and easy to make. Snapping them was a breeze. All I did was load the tile where I wanted, score the tile (pushing from closest to me to away from me), rest the breaker foot at the top of the tile, and press down on the arm while my hands gripped the metals bars from below. Even small cuts were possible, surprisingly. I had to cut 1" strips of tile for above the door and as bottom rows around the floor. Yes, the tile cutter did this well. It even cut pieces off of the 1" tile pieces. Impressive. The build quality isn't what you'd find in a high-end contractor's tool, though for a DIYer I think it would be overkill. This cutter is primarily metal with plastic accents. Overall, it feels beefy and I believe it will stand up to loads of abuse. Currently, I have 66 pieces of tile on my bathroom wall that I cut with this tile cutter. I have lots more scrap pieces from testing the cutter's abilities. The only tiles that broke were one from the first time using it (having not read the instructions, I scored it in the reverse order and trip to snap it from the end closest to me) and one that was less than 1" in width. The only issue that I have is a minor quibble that may impact someone else sensitive to high-pitched noise: the tile cutter makes a squeal when I draw the arm back toward me. This might be fixed with a bit of oil. I haven't tried it yet and probably won't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, Easy cuts This tile cutter was very affordable and super easy to use. We needed 3 inch squares with the bottom not showing, and could only find 6inch x 3inch subway tile. We cut each tile in half to get the 3 inch squares. The cut is not perfect, especially on smooth gloss tile; however I would say it would be fine for cutting tile for a corner or some other space that it wasn't very noticeable. It also did not make much of a mess. I wiped down the area with a wet towel to pick up any tiny tile shards that may have been made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from you DO get what you pay for (not necessarily a bad thing) the reviewers who used this tool for its intended, though limited, purpose and applied common sense got excellent results just like I did. take your time, line things up, measure twice, etc. and score the tile until you can feel the groove with your fingernail, and you'll get a nice clean cut with no chips. no way could I have gotten better results for $20 renting a wet saw or taking a chance with a diamond masonry blade for my mitre saw.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Was not effective for my specific need Having just one ceramic floor tile to cut I figured this would be a cheap solution. I needed to cut a tile in an "L" shape to fit around a corner. I was skeptical that it could do this so I asked a store employee if it could do this, and was told yes. There were no detailed instructions in the box, just the basic usage instructions on the box - insufficient for a total tile cutting dummy. I figured out sort of how to use it, the pusher part that's supposed to break the tile after scoring was in the way while scoring. After I'd scored the two sides of the inside of the "L" and I tried to snap out the piece the tile broke into three pieces (this is what I'd thought would happen). I was able to use the pieces anyway but that means I now have an extra grout line which is what I was trying to avoid having. So yes, it does cut the tile OK with some effort, but did not do what the store employee assured me it could.

I bought this item a few days ago to prepare for my first tile laying experience (100 sf room). I ruined a couple of tiles trying to figure out how to work the thing. Then by using a screwdriver I removed the little "pressure bar" that dangles behind the scoring wheel and it started working like a champ. Just apply light to medium pressure and make approximately five passes over the desired cut line and let the excess tile fall off into the fixture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works good if you follow these suggestions The first porcelain tile broke incorrectly. Then I figured out how to correctly get a nice even break. Follow these instructions and you will get perfect breaks each time. 1. be sure to scribe the edges good and run the scribe wheel about four times at least. 2. DO NOT USE the little arms of the breaker bar to snap tile. Instead move away the arm, center the cut over the angle in the base and then press firmly down with palms of your hands (as if doing CPR) and the tile should snap nicely. If you get a lot of resistance and the tile does not immediately break scribe it again a few times. For the price you cannot beat this tile cutter!

Not sure why so many on here are giving this cutter a bad review and saying it is junk and does not work, this tool worked perfectly for me without fail. I was using to cut 1/4" thick 6"x 3" Porcelain Subway Tiles. It's Possible others were trying to cut tile thicker than the 1/2" max.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for home improvements I tiled a large bath [floor, walls and shower} The only thing I couldn't use the cutter on was the floor which was slate, not ceramic. It did such a good job, I even cut my own trim. I certainly got my moneys worth and had very little waste,3or 4 tiles at the most. You will have to score it 2 or 3 times, just take your time and you shouldn't have a problem.

This tile cutter rips tiles effectively as long as you need the cut in a straight line across the entire width. Cannot do square or other complicated cuts - only basic straight cuts work. My tiles were 2x3 so the cuts worked great around the 1.5" to 2.5" range but always lead to cracking when out of this area. See picture for more explanation. I recommend using a wet tile saw for most use cases because you will almost always need the cuts that this saw cannot handle.

Was cutting 12" x 12" tile. One reviewer's suggestion worked for me. I scored it with this unit, took it off, flipped it over and tapped it repeated back and forth along the cut line with a ballpeen hammer. Worked well. Small pieces I could use the breaker bar. Does not make tiny cuts. Tried to cut a 1/2" of a tile and broke three trying. Simply will not do it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Ceramic cutter I had a hard time figuring out how best cut the tiles until I found this great product. Once I started using it, my job went great. I was able to cut all the necessary pieces without difficulty. This product saved time, it is not noisy, and it was not messy with a lot of dust, for example. I would recommend it to anyone working with tiles.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from dbcooperisalive likes this I am a newbie as far as installing a ceramic floor. My wife and I installed the small 1" x 4" tiles on our bathroom floor. This tile cutter really saved me a lot of time and aggravation. It worked flawlessly. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is I am not sure how good it would be with larger ceramic tiles. Best $21 I ever spent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quite good for a cheap price! I needed to diagonally cut approximately 100 - 2" x 2" tile. This cutter did the job with minimal tile breakage. Around 6 tile broke wrong so I didn't waste too many. There was a groove to place the tile for diagonal cuts so that helped tremendously. Worked well and very quickly. No regrets on getting this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Manual tile cutter The tile cutter worked adequately. It worked better as II made more cuts. I was not using enough pressure on my first attempts and the results were broken tiles, but as I learned to apply more pressure, I got better results . I am satisfied with the purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from You get what your pay for... I bought this tile cutter to make simple horizontal cuts to tile, so I could install the tile myself. The cuts were not straight, the tile didn't sit well, the ruler of the device was off, and the middle arrow wasn't the middle. I had to make ten passes to make sure I got an even break. I lost a whole box of tile to this. I should have splurged and rented a wet saw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time... I bought this to cut 12x12 porcelain tiles. The only thing this is good for is drawing a line over the top. It doesn't even cut that deep to correctly snap. I've tried about 6 times, scoring multiple times, before giving up. 1/2 wheel is nothing. Maybe if the wheel is 1", I'd have better luck. I'm going to try a circular saw blade next.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Even Waste your time or Money I bought this and literally 30 minutes later it broke. Not just broke, but the tile pressure bar snapped into pieces! Yes! This snapped into pieces! At least I got 5 cut tiles out of it.

No need to get down the wet saw and deal with the noise, mess and wet tiles at the end. For $20, this fit the bill. It easily cut through the 12 x 24 ceramic tiles that I needed cut ( roughly 20 cuts ). The back was not exactly square, but I just marked each end of the tile, confirmed with the wheel, and then let it rip. I found that two scores and then a snap had the best results, as well as blocking to support the tile ends. Don't forget to hone the edges, they will be very sharp.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Simple tool, but maybe better for small tile I purchased this tile cutter for cutting 12" x 12" porcelain floor tiles. I successfully cut the first tile right on the scored line, but I wasted many more tiles trying to repeat the process. After the first tile, I could not get a straight cut. When I attempted to snap the tile, the cut line typically deviated from the score line at least half way across the tile. Maybe this tool would work better for smaller tiles. For my project, I returned this tile cutter and instead rented a tile saw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from maybe for small tiles I bought this to cut just a couple of 12 inch ceramic tiles I need to fit an area at the edge of my kitchen floor that was damaged when the new dishwasher was installed (long story). I had a couple of boxes of the tiles left me by the previous owned who had installed the new floor. This cutter is rated up to 14 inch tiles and the tiles did fit in it. However, no matter how carefully I tried to follow the rather cryptic instructions, every time I "cut" a tile, it broke along the cut line fine, but it also broke into 2 or 3 or more large pieces on each side of the cut line. Also the cutting wheel had to be checked each time because the rather small screw fitting holding it in would back out and let the cutting wheel either move or just plain fall out. I cut my losses an got the tiles cut by a tile shop with a wet saw.

I didn't buy it for my porcelain tile floor, as the pieces are 35.5" long, and this is limited to 14". I've had it for a couple months, but just got around to trying it. I'm just glad it didn't cost too much. Cutting standard Daltile ceramic subway tile (3/8"), it cut a bit ragged, and of course, as soon as you have some obstacles to fit around, it is much better to use a wet saw. I never ended up using the tile cutter on my kitchen subway tile.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked well for 4x4 ceramic tile Worked well for two bath projects (cut about 60 tiles). The instructions aren't great and I broke the first tile. After that I learned to score twice with moderate pressure. Set the breaker bar foot at the edge of the tile against the plastic measurement scale. Make sure the breaker foot doesn't ride up on the scale. A good tap with my hand on the breaker bar resulted in a clean break every time. Well worth the money for the project I had.
