Can someone explain to me the why I can't or shouldn't use a 200 or 250 watt bulb. Someone please give me the technical reason on why it is not possible or why it could be dangerous or prone to fail with a larger wattage bulb.
Asked by: MikeyH007
Using a bulb with wattage output higher than the lamp is rated for means the higher wattage will create more heat. And the more heat applied to the plastic socket can cause the socket to become soft and warp. Then it's extremely difficult to remove the bulb and usually results in the plastic socket crumbling or fracturing in pieces. Even if the socket is porcelain, putting in a higher rated bulb in a lower rated socket can cause damage or harm to the person handling it. You "can" get a clamp on light with a high watt listing but looking online or at a farm supply store. Remember, the wattage listing is for your safety.
