Questions & Answers

Why is there such a problem with damages coming from the factory? I would think that Home Depot would correct this matter.

Can you shed any light on this tool chest? I want to order it but it seems that every one of them comes damaged. That doesn't say much for the vendor you use.
Asked by: Glenn
I received the box undamaged. But I can see why it would come damaged. It was delivered via regular delivery service and heavy. I am sure delivery drivers (UPS,USPS) probably just drop it when they get it close to your door.

However wh... this product arrived in a large cardboard box which on outside was in great condition. However when we opened box and took out product, it was SEVERELY DAMAGED, almost every corner was dented and caved in, the back panel had a huge dent outwards, we couldn't open some of the drawers due to dented side panels, We had to basically beat out the whole things, side, edges, corners with a hammer to try and get somewhat straight edges to put thing together, spending 3 hours on a 10 minutes job... ridiculous. The metal is flimsy baseline but it looked like someone in the factory dropped it from the roof then put it in a box and shipped it....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Huge Storage Capacity, Deep Drawers, All Drawers/Doors Lock With One Key HDX has a winner with this basic tool chest. It fits the bill for the average do it yourselfer's tool storage. Economical in price and large on storage capacity, you'll be pleased. It easily fits 300 piece tool kits and has room for more. The bottom two door cabinet allows you to store spools of extension cords, power tools, and other accessories. Painted in a gloss grey, it stands out from the usual sea of red tool chests and looks great in any garage or workshop. Construction is of steel, which makes the entire chest and cabinet weigh about 75 pounds. It's not real flimsy, but the corners can be bent if you bang it around a lot. It had some shipping rash out of the box. Nothing that couldn't be overlooked if you're not a perfectionist. It will see more banging around in the garage anyway. Unpacking and assembly takes about 20-30 minutes at most. Most of the time is taken bolting the casters on. You'll want a phillips head screwdriver to separate the cabinets when unpacked and then you'll need to use a 12mm socket or wrench to bolt on the casters. They give you a couple extra sets of bolts, just in case you butter finger a couple of them. Not that any of us home handypeople ever do that, right? The casters bolted on quickly, but due to the rough handling during shipping, the bottom of the cabinet was slightly tweaked. It bends back into shape and once the bottom of the cabinet and casters are bolted on, it becomes very sturdy. I would have liked to see two of the casters have locking levers. No one likes a run away tool chest on a sloped driveway. All the slide out drawers ride on ball bearings and are very smooth. They push back into position with a positive notch to hold them securely from sliding open on their own when unlocked. All of the locks (3) are keyed the same letting you open only the sections you need and leaving the rest secure from the dreaded "invisible tool borrower". I'd like to see two things added to this tool storage chest. I'd like to see handles on the cabinet and upper chest. It makes it much easier to maneuver the cabinet and lift it into a truck when filled with tools. I'd also like to see locking levers on at least two of the casters to keep the cabinet from rolling on uneven ground. Overall, not a bad tool chest for the price. Sturdy, attractive and plenty of storage for a large do it yourselfer's tool set. Pros: Ball bearing drawers Deep drawers for larger tools Three levels of locking ability Gloss Grey Finish Bottom doors allow for larger power tools, air tools, extension cord spools Cons: Thin steel used, bends easily on bottom Casters are lower quality, do not lock No handles on cabinet or upper chest

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great first tool cabinet We had a Home Depot gift card and my husband has always wanted a tool chest for our garage. This one met the price point. This is not a heavy duty professional cabinet. However, it is quite nice and will work out very well in our garage. It quickly was able to organize our tools and provide a nice place for organization. The chest had some damage on the right front lower cabinet. My husband used a hammer and wood blocks to push the corner out and into proper position. It was easy to assemble. The bolts could have been longer, since it was a tight space for the base to attach to the cabinet. It took him 45 minutes from start to finish to put the cabinet together, including the repair work. The chest has ample room , with various size drawers which roll well and lock. The wheels are large enough, but they do not have locking ability. The grey color is standard and matches our other garage storage cabinets. He is happy with this version, although it is not the top of the line cabinet. The cabinet at the bottom is large enough to store some of the larger and longer tools, such as a crow bar. As packaged, the smaller top tool box is shipped inside of this lower door cabinet. One of the first steps is to remove the bottom of the tool chest to drop out the smaller tool cabinet. This is why it was necessary to hammer out the front right corner. It would not have been possible to remove the smaller chest, without doing that first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little entry level tool cabinet I compared this to a few other models in a similar price range like craftsman and others. This one seemed too be the most bang for the buck in regards too size and the ball bearing shelves (other models did not have any just slide.) Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Luckily for me it arrived in perfect condition, something other reviewers weren't so lucky to get. I opted to pick it up in store, maybe that's what the trick is to get one not all banged up. The cabinet is a little on the small side and the metal is thin, but for this price they all are. It works great for me in my apartment garage. Definitely not a heavy duty use professional grade cabinet, you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ggreat ball bearing cabenit at a low cost Not easy to find a 10 drawer ball-bearing drawer slide tool cabinet at this low price. After searching for several weeks for an affordable chest, the best I could find was at a discount shop at $160 without bearing drawer slides. Really wanted ball bearing slides but could not afford the prices at $250-$500. My purpose is to organize tools in my new garage and that outlay was too much. When I discovered this chest at the Home Depot On-line store, I ordered right away. Had everything that I wanted and at 60% less than my best researched price with a less attractive metal-on-metal slide system. Great product at a really affordable price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This was given as a gift to my father, but I did help to unbox and assemble the tool chest. Asid... This was given as a gift to my father, but I did help to unbox and assemble the tool chest. Aside from one of the corners being bent to the point that the caster almost did not fit, the rest of the tool chest looked and functioned fine. Once the caster on the bent side was installed, it was then angled inward causing the tool chest to become unstable. We had to grab the caster and pull outward to line everything up and finish tightening the bolts that held the caster in place. After the issues with the caster were resolved everything else looked and worked fine. For the money, you can't beat it and I would recommend the tool chest to others.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very Dented on Arrival I was very surprised by how dinged up this tool chest was when it arrived. There were a few dents on the sides of the cabinet & those weren't a huge deal - it's a tool chest, it's doesn't have to be pretty as long as it's functional. However, the bottom of the chest where the casters connect was badly mangled. I had to spend a good amount of time hammering it out just to make it usable. If you look at the very base of it now, you can tell it's had a hard life, but the casters were able to attach, so that's all that mattered. If it hadn't been for the bent pieces, it really wouldn't have been hard to put together at all. Once assembled, it's very sturdy & has plenty of room for tools. It has a nice variety of drawer sizes & I really like the large cabinet at the bottom - great place to store seldom used power tools. This product allowed me to completely clear off a 4 ft work table that had become hopelessly covered in tools, bits & boxes of screws. I also moved everything from my small, hand held tool box into this tool chest & there are still drawers that are going unused. It's really a terrific amount of storage for the price point. Because of that, I will recommend it in spite of the issues with the product arriving damaged. As long as you order it with the understanding that you'll probably have to use a hammer & brute force to get it assembled, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The only thing I don't like is that you have to open the top lid in order to open any of the small drawers on top. It's not a huge deal, and maybe that's standard, but sometimes it's a little inconvenient. I find myself just leaving the top lid open all the time. I also think that having locks on the casters would be a nice bonus. I will keep this chest stationary most of the time, but in the event I wanted to take it into the driveway, being able to lock the casters would be a nice feature. Bottom line: great amount of storage at a good price, but be prepared to fix some shipping damage during assembly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product was broken I ordered this product, because it seemed like a great price for the amount of storage. When I ordered it the first time, half of the drawer bottoms had collapsed and it was heavily dented. I returned it and ordered the same item. The tool chest was very dented and the drawers were installed crooked. I am so dissapointed.
