I made room for my nightstand to be stored up about five shelves high. Made room for trash cans being stored to sit on the ground and the three shelves each side, then the shelf about the trash cans. It would be perfect for a dorm room or anywhere you like. It is attractive and light weight. It is white trimmed in gray. Inside or in a garage or shop.....perfect. So..... YES.

There's no built-in design feature that lets them hook together but many ideas have already been given. You could also drill a hole through shelf sides and use a long carriage bolt and nut.
