Questions & Answers

Can you purchase additional "feet" to fit into the bottom poles if you were to build them only half as tall and build two sets half as tall side by si

Asked by: Dory
You CAN add these together side by side, by THREE or by FIVE or BY Seven or by Nine. Standing in line at the HOME DEPOT, a lady told me she did it all along her children's playroom two & three high. EVERYTHING had its place that the children could reach. I have done it in a 5 x 15 storage unit that went from 8 feet high to 15 feet high ALL THE WAY up. You pop out the black end pieces, try not to break them. But if you do, that's okay, you only need the parts that the poles actually go into later. Then you place the piece that has no ends on top of the two straddled shelves, then pop in the poles, then pop continue as usual. TO MAKE large holes in shelves, like one that will be double empty shelf, use your black pieces to create a LONG pole to skip, then place the next shelf on top of that. I made room for my nightstand to be stored up about five shelves high. Made room for trash cans being stored to sit on the ground and the three shelves each side, then the shelf about the trash cans. It is almost like legos. I will add an image in a few weeks. getting ready to do in shed built on my property.

Would you consider using this shelf in a dorm room? I would put containers and baskets etc to hold stuff but can't find any reviews on such????

Asked by: crossed
It would be perfect for a dorm room or anywhere you like. It is attractive and light weight. It is white trimmed in gray. Inside or in a garage or shop.....perfect. So..... YES.

Can these shelf systems be hooked together to extend the length of the shelves (i. e. side-by-side)?

Asked by: hbcrandy
There's no built-in design feature that lets them hook together but many ideas have already been given. You could also drill a hole through shelf sides and use a long carriage bolt and nut.

36 in. W x 72 in. H x 18 in. D 5-Shelf Plastic Ventilated Storage Unit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 3854.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice for my new shed. Would have a 5 star but before I could get the entire thing together I had to tear it down and clean up ends of poles and holes in shelves where mold residue was left. The pieces are made to fit tightly together so any little "hanging chad," as it were. will keep you from getting it to fit together at all. Some pieces were smooth and clean edges and some were horrible. I used scissors, a nail file and a razor knife. One pole on the very top was a booger and I was about to take it down and get a refund. It is a good unit and will hold must anything you want to put on it. It is very attractive and will go into any room in the house, not just a shop or garage. Once I finally got it done.....I was better about it but not at the time of struggle. A 15 minute job ended up taking almost an hour. I do recommend this unit........just look at both ends of each pole and top and bottom holes in all shelves to save a lot of words no one should say. Let my experience help you have a happier time putting this together.

Shelving unit is quite shelfy. i can put items on it to display or store. items placed on the shelf are easy accessible from the front or rear, a little more difficult from the sides. shelving unit is high enough that I can stand and admire all the items that I have put on it. Lower shelves require bending to access, i do not enjoy this, however, I understand many people don't mind bending to access shelves. I prefer not to use the bottom shelfs myself. Over all a very enjoyable set up. I played a little music from iheart radio while assembling. Guns n Roses I believe. Strongly suggest high energy music while setting up.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bring Your Utility Knife I think this is a bit pricey for the amount of storage it provides, but I'll say it's worth it. One complaint I do have is that the holes in the shelves themselves have a lot of plastic left in them from the molding process. You need a sharp utility knife or box-cutter to clean that out. Also, several of the vertical pieces had little plastic buttons on them, I think also left over from the molding process. I had to cut those off to get them all to fit easily into the shelf holes. The total amount of work required to get rid of the excess plastic was minimal, but you really do need to do it, so bring a good, sharp knife to wherever you are setting these things up. They do hold up a fair amount of stuff and I like that there are feet that elevate the bottom-most shelf off the floor. A little extra ventilation and distance above any water that might leak into the basement is a good thing to have. The three-star rating would be four if they were ten dollars cheaper, so, as shelves, they are pretty good. Guess you have to pay for what you get in this world.

I bought 5 shelf units. One shelf arrived broken & for several, the shelf holes don't line up properly and thus the posts do not fit. Thus I can’t assemble several units.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did Not Fit Together The extruded white plastic did not fit with the hard plastic holes. Almost every hole had to be carved out with a box cutter, and the worst misfit was off over 1/8 of an inch. Thus, what is advertised as "Quick and Easy to assemble. No tools are needed." was not the product I received. I ordered 7 units, and all were like this. Therefore, I could only put together two units at a time, because it was hard and dangerous work carving out holes with a box cutter. It took me three days. Also, where the plastic came out in the middle of the shelves, I have two sharp piles of dried plastic that could easily cut what I put on the shelves. On the positive side, all parts where included in the packages, and I finally got them together. I would rather have paid more and had some quality control where the plastic parts are manufactured. It says "Made in the USA." I think the manufacturers had a good idea for a quality and useful product, but they need to monitor the adjustments to their machines and quality control.

I have a workshop filled with these units, and continue to find them just perfect for my needs. This last purchase was a bit different in that the elements that make up the holes for the vertical posts were not all aligned, which made it necessary for me to have to do a bit of carving of the material to complete the assembly. There was also a fair amount of residual material around some of the holes which was obviously indicative of the lack of usual perfection in the molding process.Other than the above, I'm completely satisfied with my purchase, and rated the product at four stars because of the unusual problem with the alignment of the holes. Thanks for asking.

Our apartment has a walk-in closet with very few fixed (ClosetMaid) shelves. They were too few for two of us, more so with a baby coming in three months. So, I took measurements of the closet and bought this shelf to supplement what I already have. Worked perfectly. However, I had to make do with only four racks because of my closet size. Overall, I am very happy with the quality -- the racks wouldn't sag at all despite distributing weight unevenly (not recommended). I would buy this product again in the blink of an eye, if the need for one arises in the future.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Take note! Quality has been reduced from earlier version. The HDX shelves I bought more than a year ago look to be made by an entirely different manufacturer. The quality of the old ones is far superior to the ones I bought in Sep 2013. The old ones are beige with a matte charcoal gray end cap. The new ones look similar, but up close you can see that the end caps are shiny black, the pattern in the beige is different, and there is a slight change to the shape of the top of the shelf as well. The old ones went together with no struggle. There was a very occasional instance of a sharp plastic edge, but that was rare. The new ones have blobs of plastic stuck to the top of the shelf, wafers of plastic hanging into the holes in the shelf, tons of sharp edges everywhere, and misalignment of the parts of the shelf inside the corners, which has caused me to tear nail and skin to put the suckers together. The old ones fit loose and easy to make assembly and disassembly quick and easy for a female alone. These are a nightmare by comparison. VERY stiff and tight, very sharp, very poorly made. I wish they had kept a good thing when they had it. I will not be getting any more of these!!!
