Q:Can these strainers be used to make compost teas?

Answer This Question

A:  Yes, I fill them with compost, castings, etc. then rubber band the opening and tie heavy twine to make a giant tea bag. I use this to make 55 gal drums of tea that is pumped into plants using a submersible pump. Works great!

    Answer This Question

A:  I'm using this to filter out particles when I mix nutrient solution for my hydroponic tomato and lettuce runs. I have found them to be very effective and have had fewer incidence of blocked and clogged emiters. Similar products are in the 100 micron range. I would expect the mesh of these strainers to be similar in dimension

A:  I wouldn't advise it; they smell of some type of solvent.

A:  Thats a good question. You might find out what they are made of and sanitize them before use. Sky's the limit

A:  Item description says " straining all types of liquids". People seem to use them for food without ill effects. I believe I would at least dampen and microwave them to kill any lurking germs as you do with sponges to keep them fresh and safe.

I know these 5-gal. Elastic Top Strainers (2-Pack) were made to use with paint and stain, but I thought I’d give them a try at screening the hydroponic nutrient solution concentrate before I added it to the dilute solution that I use for my tomatoes and cucumbers. Sometimes I get a precipitate and sometimes the nutrients don’t completely dissolve leaving particles that can plug small orifices. For this operation I put the Strainer on a food safe 5 gallon bucket that I got at Home Depot. The 5-gal. Elastic Top Strainers really fit well and worked much better than expected at straining out the solids. I was able to rinse out the strainer and will be able to use it again. I’m very satisfied with how the Strainer worked and will be mixing nutrients this way from now on.

These are nice for old paint that you've had sitting around for a while. You can mix it all you want, but there will always be small flakes that fall from the top of the bucket or the lid and get mixed in. Then they'll junk up the tip of your sprayer and you'll waste time and paint trying to flush it out every time. I did a paint job where I chose to do so and I learned not to do it again the first time. It's also good for new paint; just to ensure that nothing significant gets into your paint. If you're doing a high-end job, let's say, or using expensive tools where you don't want to risk anything. Yes, the fabric is very thin, yet paint is very thick while the threads holding the two pieces together seem loose. If you pull it out slow then it'll work. If you expect just to yank it out of there, you might rip it. If you're very quick about it, you might be able to rinse these out right after using them and therefore not have to waste as many. I was excited when I found out there were two to a pack. This made it a great value. The strainer fits very securely on the outside of any 5-gallon bucket and touches the very bottom, so you don't need to worry about it falling in.

Workforce 5 gal. Elastic Top Strainers (2-Pack) are mesh bags. You could in theory use these for all types of straining, but, their intent and purpose, for me, is to stain latex paint before dropping the snorkel of my paint sprayer in it. I have used them for cleaning up paint before rolling it, too. These have a nice elastic band around the top and good sure stitching of the seams to ensure they hold up while you strain a blob of paint through them. They work great.
