How do you know which is red or black when there are no markings ?

Answer

This cord is made from a flat cable. The two hot conductors (black and red) of the circuit correspond to the two outer conductors in the cable and the center conductor corresponds to the white neutral conductor of the circuit. When you terminate on the terminal strip the center conductor goes to the center screw and the two outer conductors go to the two outer screws.

can the three branches of the cord be pulled apart further so they can reach the three screws?

You don't need a 50amp cord for a dryer. 30 amp cord is cheaper

Of the three wires, which goes to white, red and black? Is the center wire the wire that goes to the center vertical prong?

On all 3-wire flat range and dryer cords the center conductor is neutral and goes to the center terminal in the connection box at the back of the appliance. The two outer conductors correspond to black and red or the hots and are interchangeable. They terminate on the left and right terminals. NOTE: There is no ground wire on a 3-wire range circuit so the grounding is done through the insulated neutral conductor. The code changed in 1996 to require 4-wire circuits and receptacles with a ground so that is why you must choose between a 3 or 4-wire cord when you purchase your range or dryer cord.

Had a 4 prong on a great stove I bought from Habitat Re-Store. When I got to the kitchen, I realized the house had a 3prong outlet. It’s MUCH easier and Cost Efficient to change the power cord than the outlet plug. This worked out perfectly.
