Questions & Answers

Are these shelves really 24 inches in depth? I can see very clearly about the width and height, but I may have to go to the store myself.

Asked by: John
It's also possible to create a wall length unit with these, and you'll have some shelves with double the clearance. Take one shelf from the middle, putting it's left two holes in line with all the right side poles. You have one shelf sticking out and it bridges over to another unit. Do this for at the bottom one and another (not the top) for stability. Do this to fill a wall, and you have space for taller items as a bonus.

Can the shelf units be connected? That is, can the shelves of two units share a support pole so that one may "string together" two or more units?

Asked by: JoeW
Well, yes in a way. They are not designed to be attched to each other, but we ran them back-to-back up the length of the middle of a two-car garage, leaving enogh room at each end to walk around them when the garge is closed. We use heavy duty cable toies to tie the sets to each other side to side nad forn to back. Against a wall on a level floor, that was not necessary, but we wanted true stability for safety since they were not against a wall. You can put the cable ties on the posts on the backside and they will not be noticeable. Worked perfectly for us. When we moved, we just unloaded the shelves and cut the ties.

72 in. H x 36 in. W x 24 in. D 5 Shelf Plastic Ventilated Storage Shelving Unit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 2330.

I got the numbers all wrong! I said they were rated at 40 lbs per shelf, total of 200 lbs,,,,, WRONG! They are rated at 150 lbs per shelf, total of 750 lbs !! And the normal price is $39.97. There is also a $49.97 unit that is rated at 200 lbs per shelf, total of 1000 lbs !!! Everything else I said about the shelves still goes. They are good and strong and a great deal for the price. If you're not storing car parts or bricks or something very heavy, these are the way to go !! I had no trouble assembling mine and I'm in a wheelchair ! Just give the poles a twist into the shelf below, line up the holes with the next shelf and pull down firmly and evenly. You shouldn't need any more than a smack with the palm of the hand. I've assembled 3 of them and didn't need a hammer or knife on any of them. Someone will inevitably get a unit that has defects, that's just life !! Overall, highly rated IMHO.

I bought and installed 20 of them in my basement and had it down to almost 4 minutes flat once I mastered the "build." Easily holds 75 lbs. per shelf although I do not test that theory. Looks nice, the 24" deep is okay, but it barely holds a banker's box. If you can, I would opt to go a bit deeper but it is as it states and not an inch longer in any direction. The build quality is so good that among the 20, literally side by side, there might be 1/8" difference between any of them - and that is most likely from not using the mallet to knock it down into the post more. Ease of use, nice appeal, holds tons of stuff without worry, and made to last. I cannot say enough - although I have - about this product for the money. Maybe the single best purchase from Home Depot in 20 years of home remodeling. I cannot store my home and office without these things. I even bought extras in case they stop making them.

Maybe they never tried anything else? Maybe their standards are so low that Long John Silvers is a fine dining seafood experience? I purchased 3 of these for some organization in our basement. As is typical, i put them in my basement and didn't open them until after the return period. Foolish me. These may be some of the worst products I have ever purchased. The shelves were so poorly constructed that the support legs didn't fit in half of them so now i have two leaning shelving units instead of 3 sturdy ones. One of those support legs actually cracked in half when I dropped it from a height of about 4 feet. Ummm, what? I will be replacing them with metal ones that, while more expensive, won't feel like I'm throwing my money directly into the garbage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good For The Price, But, Use Your Head We have 2. Easy to assemble. If you can't do it by hand with a fist for a mallet, use a rubber mallet, otherwise when they say no tools required, it's true. The shelves are sturdy for being plastic and last for YEARS with no problems. We have found that as long as the weight is evenly distributed these shelves are great so, I will say that WHEN the manufacturer says that you can load up to 200 lbs - EVENLY DISTRIBUTED, that is EXACTLY WHAT IT MEANS. These shelves will only do so much. Do not OVER LOAD the top shelf just because you have extra room. DO NOT exceed the warning on 200 lbs. MAKE SURE YOU PUT ANY HEAVIER ITEMS ON THE BOTTOM OR LOWER TWO SHELVES. DO NOT place your shelves on an unlevel surface and TRY not to load the shelves with boxes or storage tubs deeper than the shelf is unless what is stored inside is LIGHT (meaning: avoid overhang). As long as you use common sense and DO NOT OVERLOAD these shelves, they will suit your needs FOR YEARS OF SERVICE without issue. WE LOVE OURS!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from All defective and should be sent back to the manufacturer The shelf assembly contains flat shelf pieces and tubes to space out the shelves. The problem is that the manufacturer is too inexperienced to properly mold the parts, so the holes which the tubes are supposed to be inserted into are partially filled with extra plastic (called flashings) so it's not possible to assemble the unit unless you modify them manually. Surprisingly up to half of the area of the holes were covered with plastic flashings which are not supposed to be there. It is not a subtle thing and very visible and detectable in production. How can this wide spread defect get past the Quality Control at the manufacturer, and how can this not be caught and pulled off the shelves by Home Depot? I purchased 4 separate shelf assemblies and all 4 had the issue, and 50% of all the holes were problematic. It took me hours to use a card board cutter knife and shave off the extra plastic material from inside the holes to make it work. These shelves are defective and should not be sold.

Purchased two of these units to replace smaller, metal, shelf units, in a damp cellar. The plastic units are lighter, far faster to assemble, stronger, more attractive, and they don't rust. I was able to shorten the legs on both my units to suit my purposes. I used a hand operated miter saw/box to get a perfectly square cut on the legs, and was careful to leave the cut ends full diameter to engage the internal stops in the shelves. Do not cut the stepped ends if you decide to do this. It will destroy them. The tapered section of the posts must be left alone. Leveling the assembled shelving is essential to gain full strength of the shelving. Any tilting will weaken the shelves ability to support weight. I feel the units to be strong enough for typical storage tasks, but would avoid using them to store paint, drywall compound, auto batteries, and other "heavyweight" items that are difficult to lift. I found assembly to be simple, intuitive, and much faster than any of the current metal shelving units.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great idea but poor manufacturing, poor quality control. I bought 2 of these units & the 1st one ... Great idea but poor manufacturing, poor quality control. I bought 2 of these units & the 1st one assembled beautifully but on the 2nd, the beige shelf cut holes were misaligned w/the interior short black hole unit that holds the connecting poles, so the poles will not go in. THIS WAS THE CASE ON 4 OUT OF 5 SHELVES! Each has at least one misaligned hole so the shelves will not fit together. Previous reviewers said the company was good about sending new parts so I called this morning but no dice: since they said the defect was in so many shelves, they could not send out that many so I had to return it to Home Depot. I had ordered these online & paid for delivery because they are bulky & I didn't want to carry them home myself! So my deadline for using them is blown, I have to bring them in pieces to Home Depot, and I am very disappointed! Photo: hole on top shows the problem; w/the short black interior tube about 3/8" off so the long tube won't go in.
