can you assemble only three or four shelves high?

Are these shelves really 24 inches in depth? I can see very clearly about the width and height, but I may have to go to the store myself.

Asked by: John
Yes, it's 24 inches deep. I just measured it to verify.

Can the shelf units be connected? That is, can the shelves of two units share a support pole so that one may "string together" two or more units?

Asked by: JoeW
Well, yes in a way. They are not designed to be attched to each other, but we ran them back-to-back up the length of the middle of a two-car garage, leaving enogh room at each end to walk around them when the garge is closed. We use heavy duty cable toies to tie the sets to each other side to side nad forn to back. Against a wall on a level floor, that was not necessary, but we wanted true stability for safety since they were not against a wall. You can put the cable ties on the posts on the backside and they will not be noticeable. Worked perfectly for us. When we moved, we just unloaded the shelves and cut the ties.

72 in. H x 36 in. W x 24 in. D 5 Shelf Plastic Ventilated Storage Shelving Unit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1825.

Purchased two of these units to replace smaller, metal, shelf units, in a damp cellar. The plastic units are lighter, far faster to assemble, stronger, more attractive, and they don't rust. I was able to shorten the legs on both my units to suit my purposes. I used a hand operated miter saw/box to get a perfectly square cut on the legs, and was careful to leave the cut ends full diameter to engage the internal stops in the shelves. Do not cut the stepped ends if you decide to do this. It will destroy them. The tapered section of the posts must be left alone. Leveling the assembled shelving is essential to gain full strength of the shelving. Any tilting will weaken the shelves ability to support weight. I feel the units to be strong enough for typical storage tasks, but would avoid using them to store paint, drywall compound, auto batteries, and other "heavyweight" items that are difficult to lift. I found assembly to be simple, intuitive, and much faster than any of the current metal shelving units.

I own several of them. The reason for 3 stars are you never know if the product will go together correctly. This last one i put together would not line up correctly and the holes had to be cut out with a razor blade . Be careful doing this as to not cut your finger as I did. Also I broke one shelf but its still usable. I would have returned it for a different one had I not struggled to get it home the first time. And repackaging the product would have been more work than it was worth . I do need more of these for my son and I hobby room. Maybe I will have better luck with those .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good For The Price, But, Use Your Head We have 2. Easy to assemble. If you can't do it by hand with a fist for a mallet, use a rubber mallet, otherwise when they say no tools required, it's true. The shelves are sturdy for being plastic and last for YEARS with no problems. We have found that as long as the weight is evenly distributed these shelves are great so, I will say that WHEN the manufacturer says that you can load up to 200 lbs - EVENLY DISTRIBUTED, that is EXACTLY WHAT IT MEANS. These shelves will only do so much. Do not OVER LOAD the top shelf just because you have extra room. DO NOT exceed the warning on 200 lbs. MAKE SURE YOU PUT ANY HEAVIER ITEMS ON THE BOTTOM OR LOWER TWO SHELVES. DO NOT place your shelves on an unlevel surface and TRY not to load the shelves with boxes or storage tubs deeper than the shelf is unless what is stored inside is LIGHT (meaning: avoid overhang). As long as you use common sense and DO NOT OVERLOAD these shelves, they will suit your needs FOR YEARS OF SERVICE without issue. WE LOVE OURS!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from All defective and should be sent back to the manufacturer The shelf assembly contains flat shelf pieces and tubes to space out the shelves. The problem is that the manufacturer is too inexperienced to properly mold the parts, so the holes which the tubes are supposed to be inserted into are partially filled with extra plastic (called flashings) so it's not possible to assemble the unit unless you modify them manually. Surprisingly up to half of the area of the holes were covered with plastic flashings which are not supposed to be there. It is not a subtle thing and very visible and detectable in production. How can this wide spread defect get past the Quality Control at the manufacturer, and how can this not be caught and pulled off the shelves by Home Depot? I purchased 4 separate shelf assemblies and all 4 had the issue, and 50% of all the holes were problematic. It took me hours to use a card board cutter knife and shave off the extra plastic material from inside the holes to make it work. These shelves are defective and should not be sold.

The older ones were much better. The current generation is the worst ever. There is no quality control on this product. Of the 5 units I just purchased NONE were defect free. I was able to assemble 2 units out of the parts and will return/replace the rest. Some were damaged in the store. The plastic molding is poor and inconsistent. Most shelves have at least one support that was not fully connected to the supports (poor injection). Several legs were deformed or broken. Every part has extra plastic (flashing) sticking out that needed to be trimmed before the parts would fit.

I own a total of four of these shelf units, three purchased over a year ago. The latest one however, was a disaster. There was so much excess plastic left over from the molding process that it was initially unusable, and there were several broken and missing pieces. I inspected the packaging in-store to check for damage due to rough handling, but found no evidence of damage before getting the shelving home and unwrapped. The molding was so carelessly done that there were sharp blobs of plastic the diameter of dimes left on the top center rib of several shelves.....had anything subject to tearing like clothing or soft packaging been placed on the shelves, it would have likely been damaged. Fortunately, I have a power tool capable of making flush cuts on plastic and I was able to shave the blobs off. A knife wouldn't have done it. I called the enclosed customer service number to report the damage, and the company agreed to send me free replacement parts. All in all, an infuriating experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seems great for the price so far. Easy assembly Ordered this last night and picked it up today. Easy to get it home in back seat. It wasn't weightless, but could be managed by a 67 yr old. Assembly was easy using included instructions. Recommend a rubber mallet. The parts fit, but you need to tap them into place. Did have to get out the step ladder to get the top shelf on because it was over a foot above my head and couldn't get it to line up from down below and tap it into position. Seems very stable, even unloaded. But easy to slide into position that way. Likely to get a second.

As many have noted quality control has gone down considerably. I bought three of the nine units recently. One of the three was pretty horrible, the parts had none of the plastic flash cleaned up, and one of the shelfs was incorrectly made. I ended up contacting the number on the included paper and they sent out a new part for free. So the point (if anyone at HDX looks at these) is your Quality Control has become horrible. The other two shelfs were fine.
